Gods of Egypt (2016)
3/10
Pretty awful
14 February 2020
The effects aren't terrible, but there are just so much of them that it makes you wonder if the production had to balance on the side of quantity at the expense of quality. The thing that really let's this movie down is the dialogue. You can tell that the actors really struggle putting any emphasis or weight behind their lines. It's as though they believe in them less and less as the movie drags on. It starts as fairly promising but by the end its a CGI and script induced headache of a movie.

Superbly shot and beautifully scripted

This is a gorgeous epic of a miniseries with the most amazing cinematography. Lots of people hating on this being a town of predominantly women, but those that actually managed to watch it before getting their misogyny in a twist will realise that that particular detail is a backstory, and it's a good one. It doesn't mean that the whole thing is a feminist fairytale, it gives meaning to parts that otherwise wouldn't make a lot of sense... It was also something that actually happened back then. Towns actually did lose everyone to mining accidents. So to those that didn't give it a chance, its entirely your loss.

Yes, some parts are more believable than others, yes there are one or two plot holes and errors, but look past the trivial to the heart of this and you'll be mesmerised. It is beautiful. It makes you yearn for open plains and big sky. It doesn't fall into the evil and good tropes, everyone is shades of grey. And the balance of brutal and beautiful is perfect. One of the best series I've seen. The incredible music score just packages the whole lot up and delivers it directly into your soul.

The Tiger Who Came to Tea (2019 TV Movie)

Beautiful animation and voice acting
25 December 2019
This is a simple tale of a child who's evening is changed when a Tiger decides to visit for Tea. Based on the time honoured and beautifully charming book by the late Judith Kerr, the animation is delightful in its faithfulness to the original book as drawn by the author. It is beautiful and heart warming in its simplicity. A must watch for families and anyone that grew up knowing the story of Tiger.

Glorious and heart warming.

Scubs is a gem. Heartfelt and funny, the greatest show on TV. Deserves more credit than it got.

I wanted to hate it.
2 October 2019
... But I just couldn't. It was so obviously refusing to take itself seriously that you couldnt help but be swept up in the fun. Yes, it's over the top, unsubtle and about as deep as a politicians sense of honesty, but I found myself enjoying the banter. It's a movie you can watch with half an eye and chuckle at. Just watch it with no preconceptions and enjoy the ride.

Great movie
14 September 2019
It's one of those movies that you adore the first time you watch it, but once the first time is done, you don't feel you need to see it again. But it was thoroughly enjoyed.

Just beautiful

The imagery, imagination and scope of Mune is staggering. So beautifully crafted, I was bowled over by the world that had been created, particularly the surreal scale of things. Highly recommended.

Utterly absorbing.
13 July 2019
Heart wrenching, informative, sensitive and compelling. The cast is superb, the acting impeccable and the fact that this is based upon a historical event makes it all the more poignant. To know that this is an account of what happened and what could have happened is terrifying. This is one of the most staggering events in human history, and one I knew so very little about. It is quite possibly the best thing I've seen on TV.

Aquaman (2018)

A good, not great, movie
8 January 2019
It's easy to give this movie 10/10 if you compare it solely to its DC movie peers, but that's not a very high bar.

It's fun, the visuals are incredible, but the humour is very obvious and therefore, unfunny, the love interest and the 'oh my, did we just hold hands?!' moments are worthy of some monstrous eye-rolls and, if I'm honest, there is just too many 'superhero pose' moments that it almost becomes irritating. Oh, and the black Manta looks like he's out of the power rangers. And I'm sorry, but if the villain has to say 'you can call me Black Manta' then they really need a kick up the backside. And there's an A-Team esque moment in there that makes you want to beat yourself to death with your own eyes.

Despite all of these negatives, it's an enjoyable movie. No, it's not the best DC movie ever made, as much as I wanted it to be, but it's a fun movie. The Atlantis scenes are beautifully visualised, and the action is very well done. But the brazen attempts to copy the humour of Thor Ragnarok and combine it with the upbeat, music driven abandon of Guardians of the Galaxy just doesn't quite hit the mark. Its too cheesy, too obvious and it's been done better elsewhere. If it can't decide if it wants to be serious or light hearted, then how is the audience supposed to decide. I came out having enjoyed a visual feast that had just a little too much ham and cheese.

Beautiful

This film is gorgeous. All the way through it makes you smile, makes you think about how life sucks the joy out of things and makes you wish you had a small woodland full of the most wonderful creatures to retire to and make you reconsider what is important.

The Predator (2018)

One of the worst movies I've seen in a looooong time
12 December 2018
There really aren't any decent bits of this movie. It's awful. The acting is awful. The story (is there a story?) is awful, the jokes are awful, the script is awful, the acting is awful, the cgi is awful, the editing makes the film practically unwatchable - I had no idea what was going on for most of it. It was just such a poor movie, horrible to watch. I can only imagine the director watching the finished thing back at the end and realising what a spectacular disappointment they made.

Amazing

A thought provoking emotional roller-coaster. McConaughey is superb. If you like sci-fi and know how to invest emotionally in a movie - give it a spin. I can guarantee that, even if you don't love it, you'll finish with an appreciation for the scope of what it tries to achieve.

A really enjoyable stand-alone movie
27 September 2018
And the fan boys and fan girls wail and tear their hair at the audacity of Disney to make a prequel about one of Star Wars best loved characters. And you know what, it's a pretty damn decent movie. Ignore the tears of the hardcore fans, watch it and enjoy it for what it is rather than hate it for what you wish it were.
