Der Himmel über Berlin (1987)
it should have word limit
Movie tells about an angel who got bored of eternal life and eventually decide to materialise to feel a touch of wind and a woman, imperfection of human body and passing of time.
Flick takes place in post-war Berlin, viewers are shown urban areas, often from above with an attempt to put us in angels' shoes and distant ourselves from our mortal point of view.
As many reviewers have mentioned the plot is pretty inexistent, it is just a couple of angels talking and discussing and pondering all while ear dropping on routine mortals' thoughts, doing their angels' job.
All the ideas and thoughts feel disconnected. Overall it is too much philosophy being laid on viewers shoulders to the extent it makes little sense. In my opinion philosophy belongs to the book where it evokes introspection whilst philosophy on screen puts too much wight on your eyelids.
Igby Goes Down (2002)
Not good
I just didn't catch the point of the movie, the main character is a slacker from a wealthy family who has no purpose in life and tries to blame it on somebody else. All characters are not interesting and very artificial, I couldn't relate pretty much to anybody.
But I liked alternative rock songs from the movie .
Belfast (2021)
Overrated
This movie can be of great importance to only the director, I bet he is rewatching it at home over and over again reminiscing of the old days when he was young. Watch 2022's "Hand of God" instead, it is in colour and is much stronger as a drama.
I rated it 4/10 because of mediocre acting and presence of unrealistic theatrical scenes which do not let you sink into atmosphere and feel for the characters. Also I didn't like black and white shooting, I think it would have been much better in colour.
The Florida Project (2017)
No story, good acting
Roughly 1h into this movie I lost interest and hope for any story anyways kept watching just for good performance, interesting characters and outstanding cinematography Dafoes' character and acting was good - here he is a fair but strict hotel manager who tries to do his job and be good citizen. Mother of main heroine does good job of rebellious young single mother, the character is not very likeable but trying to be a loving mother gives her some understanding.
It is a character study movie so main focus is on characters - mother trying to provide for her daughter and keep shelter in hotel, she doesn't have any stable job, but tries to push anything valuable (like fake perfumes to golf goers) and is ready to sell her body for a quick buck while trying to have some fun and make daughter happy and trouble-free. Her daughter has happy care-free life in hotel under supervision of hotel manager and often gets into trouble with friends like her mother.
It might be easy to lose interest because well nothing significant is happening, people just live their lives how they can. Setting was beautiful, colors bright and appealing to eye.
Moyi dumky tykhi (2019)
Good
It is a good unpretentious drama with simple yet very true story about Ukrainian life and mother-son relationships. Camerawork stands out however may feel like a videoclip sometimes, also there is a lot of beautiful scenery and interesting places shown through the movie. Actors did a great job, especially an actress who portrayed mother character. Plus there was a cool hypnotic retro wave soundtrack and Twin Peaks reference. Although movie might seem slow and boring it is characteristic of its genre and at the end of the day it should strike you with emotions which it does. May recommend almost for everyone cause of mother-child theme.
The Belko Experiment (2016)
Ever wondered what's in water cooler?
First off I need to mention - this is b-movie. So, it is no surprise that actors tend to overact and unreasonable life-changing decisions of characters my sometimes give you plenty of chuckle. Story might have been so lot more, if elaborated but instead is just a coverup for bloody massacre between your neighbouring coworkers in stupid psychological experiment. I've been surprised by John McGinley presence portraying insane axe-wielding white-collet worker, he tried to pull the Johnny from "Shining" but seems like he did not put in much effort. You could relate to main character sometimes, if not his stupidity but I guess it is because he might seem the most sane person in the room. Script, however, has some situational office space jokes that lightens the mood. But overall the whole film is filled with violance, predatory blood freenzy and claustrophobic atmosphere. Blood here is over the top to compensate for poor sfx. Music was good though if you like covers to popular songs. I would not recommend just for unbelievable story, poor performances and excessive gore.
Dimension 404 (2017)
Rating is fair
The Pilot was good and left you kinda intrigued about whole series. But Second series which seemed like a cheap ripoff of Carpenter'a 1988 "they watch" film, I quit. It is not that the series very bad, it is slightly overrated but kinda deserves its mediocre rating. May not recommend for Black Mirrors fans but may for younger audience that likes series vibe.
Overlord (2018)
Don't get fooled by the trailer, this is garbage
Ok intro was a good, intriguing one with good sfx all the explosions that get you to really feel for guys randomly dying far from home, although you did not have time to get to know them enough. Not sure why trained troopers would act like easy going guys on a walk in a neighbourhood right after emergency landing in enemy's land. Not realistic but ok let it slide, this is a Nazi zombie horror movie with flamethrowers, blood-flowing and heads-rolling, I wish it was. Speaking of credibility of all what is happening I wonder how one could run with his back facing the attackers firing and not be shot by the strongest soldiers at that time, director, seriously try playing COD at least - not gonna happen. All shotouts look like COD on the rookie mode. The first scene of the movie looked more, if not the most realistic.
The first zombie btw only appears after a good half of the movie that should have been at least one-third shorter leaving behind pointless chatter and letting zombies free earlier.
The looks of zombies are a bad taste not adding more scares, should of added more originality for a new nazisplotation flick. What makes it worse is abandunce of cliches like everywherw, again making ALL actions predictable. Watching the film you usually feel like having a sequence of deja vus.
Protogonists are different and likable. Main hero is good even though a pacifist is a doubtful choice for action-driven movie.
To sum up we have a good interesting trailer but boring movie full of cliches, not a good horror nor action, expected more, hard to single out a couple of positive things. If you watched some action horrors movies and like the genre - do not waste your time on this
