The Magnificent Seven (2016)
Definitely not a keeper
You'd maybe want to watch this when you literally have nothing else to do (even hanging wallpaper). I certainly wouldn't advise paying money for it. I'm upset that I invested the time watching it, having pulled the DVD out about halfway through.
People expecting a script anywhere near the sharpness and wit of the original movie will be sadly disappointed (nothing at like "When it comes to getting his head blown off, he's downright bigoted!").
It has the digitised feel of a modern movie. Any of you used to the quality of a laserdisc on a decent player will know what I mean.
To me, it occupies the same status as the Timothy Dalton Bond movies - they have some merit in their own right, but should not be compared to the originals.
It's a shame the actors don't get a say in the editing!
Hunters Lodge (2016)
A Candidate for fast forwarding
There are probably no reviews because nobody coul bear to watch it to the end.
This whole film could have been done in twenty minutes if you take out the weird flashbacks which youcan safely skip through.
I think you would have more fun with a root canal.
Deadly Impact (2010)
A ridiculous film
Cliché ridden, ridiculous plot. The usual females blundering into stupid situations and have to be rescued by the hero from the usual serial killer/terrorist/bank robber*. Plenty of explosions, with not even sardonic humour to lighten the load.
*Delete as necessary.
It happened to be on when I was doing something else, so I'm glad I didn't actually have to pay to see it.
It rates even lower than Columbo as optical chewing gum (and that's being unfair to Columbo), so if you've literally got nothing else to do, with not even a root canal in the offing, maybe watch it.
Forsaken (2015)
At last a movie that gives Donald Sutherland rein.
Many modern westerns are giving the audience a good flavour of what life was like back then - this is one of them.
This is, at last, a movie that allows Donald Sutherland a chance to use his considerable talent - he was criminally wasted in Pride & Prej, which was a movie that demanded it.
Both Sutherlands are excellent in this movie, as are the costars who solidly back them up.
I'd better also mention the photography and the scenery - both excellent and high quality.
This DVD is a keeper, and is one that will be watched again.
The Crown (2016)
Didn't the King die actually while HMQ was going to Australia?
A little look at Wikipedia would have found this:
On 31 January 1952, despite advice from those close to him, the King went to London Airport to see off Princess Elizabeth, who was going on her tour of Australia via Kenya. On the morning of 6 February, George VI was found dead in bed at Sandringham House in Norfolk. He had died from a coronary thrombosis in his sleep at the age of 56. His daughter Elizabeth flew back to Britain from Kenya as Queen Elizabeth II.
I'm also sure the QM wasn't quite the weeping willow portrayed at the wedding!
If they get that wrong in the beginning, why bother watching the rest?
