Oppenheimer (2023)
It 'A Bombed' Big Time For Me
I had great expectations of this movie but I was sadly disappointed. The constant screen jumps and changes from colour to black & white were completely disorienting and I soon lost the plot in trying to grasp who was who and why. I felt that I needed to have done some prior research on who the various scientists were as each was introduced to help me grasp what was going on.
At three hours long it really stated to grate with me after the first hour and by the end of the second I couldn't stop yawning with boredom, although I did manage to stick it out to the end I came away with a headache. I wished I'd spent three hours down the pub instead.
Despite an impressive cast this is a totally overrated movie, there are far better ones out there that are half as long and twice as enjoyable. But if you want to watch something to fall asleep to this is definitely the one to for you.
Designated Survivor (2016)
I Switched Off After 22mins of Episode One!
How typical. The US government gets blasted to hell and the first thing the military do is kick in DEFCON2! Jesus help us from this crazy nation! The whole thing started to feel like garbage early on, where we have a frantic kitchen scene, typical of every US movie ever made, with everyone in a hurry to go somewhere rather than just sitting down to eat. Why don't these folks try getting up earlier? We then have the usual sickly sweet american pie daughter and an obnoxious teenage son who could have been taken straight out of any number of US movies & series made in the past 20years. Soon after this scene all hell breaks loose and the US wants to declare war on the world for blowing up their president, and then the FBI turns up..... at this point I switched over to watch the Simpsons.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
It was just too BLUE for me
Well, I downloaded a 5.5GB HD mkv version of this movie expecting pretty good quality, given all the hype and the reported millions of dollars spent on the CGI. But dear oh dear what a disappointment. The CGI is awful and nothing but shades of blue on blue with the occasional bit of technicolour thrown in, to give the eyes a rest no doubt. So for me the so called stunning graphics were pretty crap!
The overlong catchup sequence (this being ten years on from the previous movie) was tedius and the sound quality was abysmal to the extent that I had to use subtitles to understand the dialogue and the constant background noise was really distracting.
The storyline was equally poor with typical US style 'gung ho' grunts shooting and blowing up anything that moves (booyaa!). So as early as 10 minutes in I really didn't give a toss who was who or why and was tempted to just fast forward to the end to get it over with.
So I don't rate this sequel at all, the first was brilliant and my 2GB mkv version shows far better quality CGI.
Severance (2022)
Brilliant and original
Right from the strange opening of episode one to the cliff hanging end of episode nine I was absolutely hooked and I can't wait for season 2. The cinematography and dystopian environment gave it a compelling 'edgyness' that kept me glued to every scene. The cast and acting was first rate and the storyline was never predictable, unlike so many shows these days.
I understand that season two is currently being filmed, with the same cast, so lets hope it continues from where the cliffhanger left off. I will be fascinating to see how each character's story develops.
There should be more original shows like this, I can't recall any that come close.
Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Tom Cheese Strikes Again
Yep, the king of cheese is back with another cheesy movie for all the cheese eaters out there. With his cheesy grin and that cheesy haircut he should be advertising dairy products, particularly cheese. If you like cheese then OK, but there's only so much I could stomache.
Warning (2021)
The Clue Is In The Titlle - Be Warned
Yep, not too much to say here other than this movie is total bollox with a big B. Where do these so called 'writers' learn their trade fer Chrissakes? Half way through I decided to put in on fast forward and turn the sound off, just to get it over with. It immediately became a much better movie and reminded me of my hero Charlie Chaplin. Be warned.
Molly's Game (2017)
Way Too Chaotic
After 15 minutes I just had to hit the stop button. The story is all over the place and the quick fire dialogue coupled with manic scene changes make it almost chaotic. The directing style is awful making the story hard to follow. I soon decided that I wasn't really bothered about Molly or her story and that reading her book would probably be the better bet (excuse the pun!). However rather than spend money on the book I suggest that, like me, you just read about the story on Wikipedia and save yourself the pain of watching this pile of crap!
Les frères Sisters (2018)
I Totally Recommend This
Excellent cast, direction and cinematography made this a very watchable movie, I enjoyed it immensely. Even better was the fact that there was no 'woke' agenda and, true to the period, no 'token blacks' were chucked in to pander to the PC brigade - a welcome change.
The Dig (2021)
A Wonderful Movie
Forget the crap that we usually get fed from the US film makers these days and watch this. Set in the days shortly before WW2 it portrays a rural England that is now sadly lost forever (we English are a minority in our own Country now). The acting, script and cinematography are all first class.
There's no gung ho whooping, yelling, swearing, or high fiving, so a Yank or young audience will probably find it boring and slow, but if you want to watch an absorbing, intelligent, gentle paced movie then try this. I loved it.
Horizon Line (2020)
The Plane Should Have Crashed, And Saved Us Instead
Yep, if only the plane had simply crashed with all board and saved us all from having to suffer this piece of garbage. When will the Yanks learn how to make a decent, credible and intelligent thriller?
Togo (2019)
A 'Must See' Very Enjoyable Movie
I enjoyed this from start to finish. It isn't overly sentimental, which is the norm for this type of Hollywood Disney movie, and is all the better for it. The scenery is terrific and the special effects pretty good, and with Willem Dafoe in the cast you can't really go wrong. Definitely recommended.
Blood Vessel (2019)
The Raft Should Have Gone Down With the Ship!
Yep and that would have saved us all from this pile of dog poo.
The Vast of Night (2019)
I Loved It
This is the kind of unusual movie making that's right up my street. I loved the retro feel and the way it was shot, which added to the suspense. The acting was pretty good too, so full marks all round. Treat yourself and go watch it.
The Parts You Lose (2019)
At Last Hollywood Makes A Decent Movie
An excellent cast and a totally absorbing and watchable movie. Full marks all round.
American Factory (2019)
Americans Shown How To Do It By The Chinese
So American factory workers get shown how to actually work efficiently for a living by the Chinese, who actually know what working hard means. It's a lesson that needs to be well learned by an isolationist nation who have had it real easy since the 50's while the rest of the world struggled to find their feet after WWII.
The fact that America now sees it's economy being undermined by the Chinese machine has brought a reality check long overdue. This movie made me smile for many reasons.
Color Out of Space (2019)
The Thing Meets The Shining
Nick Cage is a terrible actor and I normally avoid any movies that he's in (how does this man make a living?) bit I gave this movie a go as I like the genre.
Firstly it' very well shot and starts out nicely building the characters, although it's not clear what Cage's character actually does for a living (a bit like the actor himself I suppose). But as the second half of the movie unfolds we see Cage's performance for what it is, totally over the top and bordering on the ridiculous. Once I started laughing at the over acting this movie lost its original tense atmosphere and lapsed into comedy.
Imagine a blend of The Shining and The Thing and this movie is it.
The Call of the Wild (2020)
Wait For The DVD
It's a movie for little kids pure and simple. So rather than drag the darlings along to the cinema wait for the DVD to come out and play it to them before bedtime, they'll be asleep in no time.
Angel Has Fallen (2019)
Another Gung Ho Yank Movie
After just 10 minutes of watching this absolute tripe I decided to put it on (very) fast forward just to get to the end. It's so predictable I knew who the baddies were going to be and how it was going to end. So I saved 1hr 50mins of my life.
It reminded me of Team America World Police, which was a much better movie.
How on Earth did that useless actor Nick Nolte get a part?
After watching this it's no wonder the rest of the world hates America for the trigger happy maniacs that they are.
Dear God please protect us from this nation.
Doctor Sleep (2019)
Kubrick It Ain't!
Just started to watch this and 18 minutes in I'm hovering over the delete button. The slow start is soooo tedious. I don't think I'll manage 2.5 hours. The Shining was a masterpiece.
I Am Mother (2019)
I Think There's Actulally A Bloke In The Movie!
I love sci fi but this is yet another 'wimmin' movie with a token bloke.
The #MeToo's will love it though.
Uncut Gems (2019)
Oi Vey Another Movie, With Shouting
So, we have a movie based in New York, about Gems, with lots of shouting. Surprise surprise the star is a bad. I sense some typecasting here.
1917 (2019)
Thank God - A War Movie With No 'Gung Ho' Yanks Whooping It Up For Once!
Yep, if you're tired of watching a bunch of ill disciplined Yankee grunts running around and shooting at everything that moves then watch this.
Joker (2019)
Best Movie Outa Hollywood In Years!
Joaquin Phoenix is outstanding in ths dark Gotham City tale. I won't add anything to the many previous good reviews. Just watch it and see an actor at his best.
The King (2019)
Typical Hollywood Corruption Of History
This movie has absolutely no bearing on historical fact, so just treat it like an offshoot episode of Game Of Thrones, and if you want to really know about Henry V go to the local library and read a history book.
Bill Shakespeare was a one for making up his own history, but that's nothing compared to the dreamers in the Hollywood movie industry.
The Mustanger and the Lady (2017)
Basically A #MeToo Movie - But Set As A Western....
Well the #MeToo crowd will love it I suspect. Nice scenery and cinematography but with wimmin having a hard time out West.
