Watchmen (2019)
A season of giving
Well, so I just finished watching the season finale. Best show of the year in my book. I might even rewatch this if only to look for clues throughout the season. If you are on the fence on whether to watch this, I recommend taking a deep breath and let this show filter into your brain bit by bit. There's a lot of mind games and also just a lot to take in - both in pain and pleasure. The overall production is fantastic.
I do hope that the creators and HBO have figured out an overall trajectory for the whole show. I would hate for it to devolve into a money grab. I'm also worried about a Lost-like route from mystery to repetitiveness.
However, given the controversy so far I expect it to become more of a cult favorite. So enjoy this while it lasts! It's a season of giving.
Domovoy (2008)
Potential not fulfilled
This could have been a very polished thriller. The plot is reasonably suspenseful, but the acting is a bit dour. I especially found the Vika character underwhelming. I also think the film should have focused more on the protagonist's inner development. I kept on waiting for a "moment of truth", but found none. Nevertheless, there are some nuggets in here, like the opening sequence of the book signing. I normally don't advocate the full Hollywood polish, but in this case I think a remake might work better than the original. Edward Norton would make a good Anton Prachenko. Scarlett Johansson as Vika, and Sean Penn as the Ghost.
