Harley Quinn (2019)
wacky, brutal, unique, and gutwrenching
I was nervous about this series. i was particularly nervous about the casting of cuoco as the lead; she's a very talented lady, but i was unsure if she was perfect for harley. i'm still not ENTIRELY sure she was, but she did a damn good job convincing me. by the end of the episode, her voice work had pushed me onto her side. the humor in this show is very unique. it has a brilliant tone of deranged zany madness, and it's just perfect for harley. i really loved it, and i cannot wait for more.
Batwoman (2019)
a note to all the so-called fanboys.
Kate kane has ALWAYS been a lesbian. since 2006. i have seen several reviews claiming that "the original batwoman was a policemans daughter". that would be batGIRL, specifically barbara gordon. you're all mad that a series has a gay woman as the lead, moreso than the actual faults of the episode... unfortunately, it does have many faults. i think most of the reviewers hate it for what it is, but that doesn't mean i think it had a good premiere. hopefully the season will improve... because it needs it.
Dumbo (2019)
become a child again.
This movie wasn't perfect, no; there were faults, just as there are in any cinematic feat, and just as there were in the original. But this film does what the live action batb failed to do- it understands the core of the character and the story, and it possibly does it in SOME WAYS better than the original. Emphasis on some ways. The focus here is the same emotional core as the original dumbo, the love between mother and child. there are some beautiful parallels between the humans and dumbo, and some tragic ones to #kidsincages, happening in real life. but this movie changes the ending (SPOILER ALERT). The original dumbo ends at the circus, now he is beloved by all and reuinited with his mother, but he is still a circus animal. This story ends with dumbo and his mother in the jungle, and dumbo spreads his ears and he flies as far and free as he want. And oh, no words could describe the absolute magic of seeing him truly soar around the circus tents for the first time. don't let the jaded, cynical, "adult" reviewers fool you. This movie is imperfect, but it's magic.
Happy Death Day (2017)
a silly, romantic, fun, lovely slasher!
I'm not going to deny it, I adore slasher flicks. They almost never get made anymore unless they're sequels or remakes, so when I saw this pseudo-slasher, I was instantly excited, even though I thought the trailer looked a little goofy. I had no idea the film was a horror comedy, and great at giving us both. The one montage in particular is absolutely hysterically funny. I thought the killer was a little obvious, but it was a satisfying twist. tree was a great protagonist, and I'm a fan of the lead actress, knowing her from La La Land and her MTV show, Mary and Jane. A wonderfully fun slasher, with a cute romance and a deliciously biting dialogue. I adored it.
The Bold Type (2017)
a sweet, funny, progressive show!
i think there's no reason for this show to have a 5.9. it's funny, clever, dramatic, and exciting, all while being about feminism- particularly inter sectional feminism-at a magazine called "scarlet". its unique even when it plays into tropes. the main trio are likable, interesting characters that we can root for. I'm really excited for where this show will go!
Twin Peaks (2017)
lynch at his best
Twin Peaks has always been one of lynch's best works. it's surrealist take on small town life has always been captivating. but, back in the 90's when lynch (and frost!) premiered this masterpiece, it was restricted by rules of television-they couldn't use certain curse words or show sex.... two things lynch's films are filled with. this show had little to no interference by network owners. showtime execs let lynch do whatever he wanted... and the show is better for it! it's reached a surrealism of lynch's highest order. visually fascinating, utterly captivating. the new cast is doing spectacularlly! naomi watts stands out most. bravo, lynch. bravo.
Sherlock (2010)
not the worst ever.... but insanely overrated
this show is a mess. bad acting, bad writing, and a huge lack in diversity are my first problems, without spoilers. the show isn't absolutely abysmal, which is why i gave it a 3 rather than a 1. dreadful in every way. it's despicable how popular this show is. yet another example that popularity is not the same as quality.
