A Quiet Place: Day One (2024)
Horrific monsters with inconsistent story and over-the-top drama
A Quiet Place: Day One continues the franchise's legacy with impressive CGI and special effects that bring the monstrous creatures to life in a chillingly original way. The monsters, terrifyingly effective even after three movies, provide the film's high points with their menacing presence. These elements are where the movie truly excels, creating moments of genuine suspense and horror that fans of the series will appreciate.
However, the film stumbles significantly in its narrative execution. There are numerous plot holes and inconsistencies that detract from the overall experience. The movie's internal logic falters, particularly with the creatures' sensitivity to sound. At one point, any noise seems to attract the monsters, but in other scenes, characters can whisper or even scream without consequence. This inconsistency undermines the tension and makes it difficult to stay fully immersed in the story.
Character actions also strain credulity. The co-star, who is portrayed as being in a constant state of panic, inexplicably risks his life to save a cat. Such moments feel contrived and out of character, pulling viewers out of the narrative. Additionally, the central plot point involving a desperate quest to reach a pizza place during an apocalyptic event is particularly hard to believe. This lack of realism makes it challenging to invest in the story.
The film's focus on human drama, much like the second one, feels overemphasized and detracts from the core horror elements. The inspirational human stories, while intended to add depth, come off as excessive and unrealistic in the context of the dire situation. This emphasis on melodrama, rather than the survival horror aspect, dilutes the impact of the story.
Despite the solid performances from the cast, the script's lack of relatability and the over-the-top inspirational themes hinder the movie's potential. Overall, this third film (and hopefully the last one) offers impressive visuals and monster design but falls short in delivering a cohesive and believable story, earning a 4/10.
The First Omen (2024)
Watch "Immaculate" instead of this unnecessary movie
"The First Omen" is a disappointing addition to the revered Omen franchise. Unlike its predecessors, which masterfully blend suspense, horror, and storytelling, this prequel struggles to find its footing. The pacing is sluggish, dragging viewers through scenes that feel extraneous and fail to contribute to the narrative. The plot, intended to provide a backstory to the chilling legacy of Damien, is convoluted and lacks coherence, leaving audiences more confused than captivated.
Compared to "Immaculate," which offers a gripping plot, stellar performances, and relentless tension, "The First Omen" falls short on all fronts. The acting is lackluster, and the characters are underdeveloped, making it hard to invest emotionally in their fates. The film's attempts at horror are tepid, lacking the edge-of-your-seat moments that made the original films iconic.
Overall, "The First Omen" feels unnecessary. The original Omen movies stand strong on their own, and this prequel does little to enhance or expand upon the existing lore. For fans of the franchise, it may be worth a watch out of curiosity, but it's unlikely to leave a lasting impression. With its slow pace, confusing story, and failure to capture the essence of its predecessors, it earns a disappointing 3/10. If you're in search of a compelling horror film, you're better off watching "Immaculate."
Poltergeist (1982)
Campy horror genre, scoring a solid 6/10
"Poltergeist" remains a classic in the horror genre, scoring a solid 6/10. Its standout features are the impressive creativity for the visual effects without today's CGI and haunting sound design. However, it leans more towards campy horror, exploring the absurdity of the paranormal rather than aiming for sheer terror. Despite its strengths, the film is weighed down by numerous plot holes, notably the questionable decision of the family to remain in the haunted house despite the escalating supernatural occurrences. Additionally, the adults often behave irrationally, detracting from the overall believability of the story.
Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles (1999)
A lifelong great animated sci-fi series... 2024 and still amazing
Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles is a timeless classic in the realm of science fiction animated series. As a viewer who enjoyed it as a child and revisited it two decades later, I can attest to its enduring appeal and quality. This review delves into the various aspects that make *Roughnecks* a standout series, from its groundbreaking CGI effects to its well-developed characters and compelling storytelling
CGI Effects:
One of the most striking features of *Roughnecks* is its pioneering use of CGI animation. Produced in the late 1990s, the series utilized early 3D animation techniques to bring its alien-infested worlds and futuristic battles to life. Despite the technological limitations of the time, the CGI effects remain impressive and immersive. From the vast landscapes of distant planets to the intricate designs of alien creatures, the visuals hold up remarkably well even by today's standards. The attention to detail in the animation adds depth to the world of *Roughnecks* and enhances the overall viewing experience.
Character Development:
Central to the success of *Roughnecks* is its well-rounded and relatable characters. Led by the dynamic team of Lieutenant Razak, Sergeant Brutto, and Corporal Rico, the Roughnecks are a diverse group of soldiers who each bring their own strengths and personalities to the forefront. From the brave and determined Carmen Ibanez to the intelligent and resourceful Carl Jenkins, the characters in *Roughnecks* are more than just cogs in a war machine; they are individuals with their own hopes, fears, and aspirations. The series takes the time to explore their backstories and relationships, allowing viewers to become emotionally invested in their journey as they battle against the relentless onslaught of alien insects.
Storytelling:
At its core, *Roughnecks* is a captivating tale of humanity's struggle for survival against a formidable extraterrestrial threat. Drawing inspiration from Robert A. Heinlein's classic novel *Starship Troopers*, the series expands upon the lore and universe of the source material while carving out its own unique narrative. Each episode is packed with action, suspense, and intrigue as the Roughnecks face off against swarms of giant bugs, navigate treacherous alien landscapes, and uncover the sinister machinations of their insectoid adversaries. The storytelling in *Roughnecks* is both engaging and thought-provoking, touching upon themes of sacrifice, camaraderie, and the nature of war.
Legacy and Potential:
While *Roughnecks* stands as a testament to the talent and creativity of its creators, it is not without its flaws. One of the most notable shortcomings of the series is its lack of a proper conclusion. Due to budgetary constraints and production issues, *Roughnecks* was prematurely canceled after its first season, leaving many storylines unresolved and fans clamoring for closure. Despite this setback, the impact of *Roughnecks* continues to reverberate through the annals of science fiction animation, inspiring future generations of creators and fans alike.
In conclusion, *Roughnecks: The Starship Troopers Chronicles* is a classic masterpiece that has stood the test of time. Its groundbreaking CGI effects, well-developed characters, and compelling storytelling make it a standout series in the sci-fi genre. While its premature cancellation left some loose ends, the enduring legacy of *Roughnecks* ensures that it will always hold a special place in the hearts of fans old and new. Whether revisiting it as an adult or discovering it for the first time, *Roughnecks* is a must-watch for anyone who appreciates epic tales of interstellar warfare and human resilience.
Monica (2022)
A touching, intense and delicate movie about family traumas and reconciliation
"Monica" is a profoundly moving drama directed by Andrea Pallaoro, encapsulating the poignant journey of Monica, sensitively portrayed by Trace Lysette, a transgender woman facing the ghosts of her past while tending to her terminally ill mother, played by Patricia Clarkson. The film delicately unravels the complexities of familial rejection, hurtful memories, and the pursuit of forgiveness. Pallaoro crafts a mesmerizing slow burn, each scene pulsating with intense emotions, yet wrapped in delicate vulnerability. The movie intricately navigates the intricacies of human connections, depicting the nuances of reconciliation and the profoundness of healing. Lysette's performance is remarkable, carrying the weight of Monica's emotional journey with authenticity, while Clarkson delivers a compelling portrayal that adds depth to the narrative. The cinematography beautifully captures the essence of each moment, elevating the film's impact. "Monica" stands tall with its exceptional storytelling, powerful performances, and a heartfelt exploration of acceptance, making it a definitive 10/10 movie experience.
Scavengers Reign (2023)
Captivating space sci-fi series that stands as a masterpiece
"Scavengers Reign" is a captivating animated space sci-fi series that stands as a masterpiece in its genre. The visuals transport viewers to a mesmerizing otherworldly realm, showcasing breathtaking landscapes, unique flora, and captivating wild and intelligent life. Beyond its stunning visuals, the storyline is a testament to brilliance, seamlessly weaving together an engaging plot that delves into the depths of human emotions while exploring the mysteries of the unknown. Each episode keeps you glued, unraveling layers of intrigue and complexity. Surprisingly, although a second season isn't necessary, the show's excellence makes it a delightful rewatch choice, a testament to its enduring quality. This mini-series is a testament to the heights animation and storytelling can achieve, marking it as one of the best animated space sci-fi shows ever created.
Solo (2023)
"Solo" is great movie, beautifully acted and filmed
"Solo" showcased at TIFF 2023 intricately portrays a complex and intense relationship between two drag queens artists living in Montreal, delving into themes of abuse, drug use, gaslighting, trauma, and the quest for love. It goes beyond stereotypes, refusing to be labeled merely as "another gay movie." The film's beautiful cinematography, stellar acting, and compelling narrative vividly depict the intricate layers of a romantic yet toxic relationship, mixed with one's desire to be a star. Its exploration of these dark themes is both raw and thought-provoking, leaving a lasting impact on viewers.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters (2023)
Poor storyline, insufferable characters and not enough monsters
"Monarch: Legacy of Monsters" attempts to weave an intricate tale of mythical creatures but falls short of its potential. The series suffers from a lackluster storyline, unrelatable characters, and a scarcity of the promised monsters, leaving viewers craving more. The script struggles to find depth, resulting in a confusing and shallow narrative. Unfortunately, the acting fails to elevate the material, making it challenging to invest in the story. Ultimately, with its telenovela-like feel and numerous shortcomings, the show currently falls short of delivering an engaging experience, warranting a 4/10 rating.
RuPaul's Secret Celebrity Drag Race (2020)
Season 2 gone downhill - not showing the celebrities faces was a BAD CHOICE
What's the point of watching a celebrity version of drag race if we can't see who are these celebrities? Who thought would be entertaining to keep their identity secret? To begin with, most of these "celebrities" are unknown for 95% of the viewers, so showing their faces is the only way for us to see and learn who they are...
Persuasion (2022)
Go watch Fleabag instead, you're welcome
This is clingy. They shamelessly tried to copy the iconic and brilliant mannerism from the lead character of the show Fleabag - it does not go well, another poor attempt from Netflix to copy & paste classics.
Verdens verste menneske (2021)
A great movie to watch if you're feeling heart broken and hopeless about finding love
Because it will make you realize how mundane romance is, that there is no perfect formula even when the world tells you so. That pain and suffering is an inescapable reality for anyone who dares to dream about a real love and more so for those who don't.
I enjoyed it very very much. Perhaps so because it made me laugh for so much and then cry and feel things. The movie didn't make me feel hopeful in any way, rather just how random life is...
Ultraman (2019)
Great animation and shallow storyline
Ultraman is an iconic hero. The action scenes and special effects are fantastic, however it lacks a solid storyline and motives. In the end, it becomes forgettable because it misses to delivery the passion and heroism of the original Ultraman.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
Everything horrible
Terrible storyline. Stupid script. Poor acting. Another generic garbage from Netflix. Nothing close to the thriller of the original one. Don't waste your time.
Don't Look Up (2021)
We all get it's a satire, it simply isn't a good movie
A lost potential. Even with the talented cast and high budget, the movie fails to captivate the viewer and it's rather boring, too long and try too hard to be "cool" - a failed attempt to be relevant and trendy at the same time.
Nightmare Alley (2021)
Overall a good movie, slowly paced but it stays with you
Great cinematography, acting, and well built story. A bit slow and somehow predictable, however worth it the time and the story and characters stay with you after leaving the theater.
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
The original Dexter is dead, this feels more like a remake not as good
Through the original Dexter's eyes and narrative we could get a glimpse of the cold, dark, violent and real world in a unique and creative way. That Dexter no longer exists in this new season. Still giving it a try but not impressed so far, especially the whole "sister" imagination thing, screaming in his ears all the time, make it rather annoying.
Schitt$ Creek (2015)
You'll fall in love with each of the main characters, and that makes this show so so especial
Moira, Johnny, David, Alexis, and Stevie... each of them are so uniquely especial, over the top funny, weird and loving. After 2 seasons of the show you just learn to love them. And now that I finished the show I'll just deeply miss them.
Durante la tormenta (2018)
7 out of 10. Good time travel movie
The concept is nothing new but they managed to deliver an unique story within a thriller scenario. The only downfall is that the movie is too long and a bit repetitive. Still worth a watch.
We Are Who We Are (2020)
What a mess
A whole episode dedicated to a spoiled brat... bad acting and stupid storyline.
Fleabag (2016)
I usually don't like comedies but Fleabag is too good to not love it
This show plays with the complexity of deep emotions and family's relationships using the best of the British culture: dark humour. Combined with fantastic actors, it results in this masterpiece that the only bad thing about is that it only has 12 episodes.
Druk (2020)
Ok movie but also boring and overhyped
It's an okay movie, with a good insight into the alcohol consumption and its social role. But it goes on and on with the same atmosphere, repetitive scenes, and it doesn't deliver what it promises. Too boring to say the least.
Breaking Boundaries: The Science of Our Planet (2021)
Informative but very utopian
It feels like a self-help book for society to feel good about how we are destroying the environment, not doing anything to change, and hoping that things will get better. Also, the documentary fails miserably for not calling out big corporations and the unsustainable capitalism model that is causing our own extinction.
A Quiet Place Part II (2020)
More like: Stupid People Making Noise
First, this is not a sequel, more like a remake of the first movie without the excitment and suspense and instead full of forced "incidents" that are more like stupidity from each character. And we still have no idea what are these monsters.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
20% of some good special effects can't save 80% of pure nonsense
This movie's story, script and dialogues are so lame that you can notice how the actors are doing the bare minimum to act convincingly, they are just there for the money. Not worth it 2 hours of anyone's time.
Invincible (2021)
What a great surprise... cannot wait for more seasons
I haven't read the comics and actually didn't know about Invincible until watching this show and was amazed by it; the most raw dc like superhero animation I've ever watched. Excited about a second season.
