Fringe (2008)
Excellent and Unusual
Fringe is an amazing new show that is worth your time. It's interesting and complex, but not hard to understand. It has a sense of humor that doesn't overpower the dynamic of the show and you can feel smart watching it. Imagine the best part of every forensic science and crime show, add a touch of the mystery and supernatural and throw in only the good parts of a crime show and put those together and you have the basics for Fringe. The acting is sublime so far and the chemistry between each of the characters if great. Joshua Jackson and John Noble has a believable back-and-forth banter as estranged son and somewhat insane father. And Anna Torv looks to be a strong female role without being stereotypical. All the character seem to be genuine and believable.
I strongly recommend this show to anyone who's tired of the typical cop and lawyer shows and ready for something new and interesting.
King Arthur (2004)
Love.... line?
The legends of King Arthur had always fascinated me, so when this movie came out i if course jumped at the chance to view it. I was not disappointed. The visuals in this movie are amazing. The characters are so easy to relate to, the storyline is believable and the filming is excellent.
The fighting in the movie is impressive. Each character has his/her own fighting style which each actor pulls off very well. I was impressed by the fight scenes and the sheer intensity of each actor's performance. You really feel for Arthur's knights.
The storyline was unusually believable. Most-likely to be seen in any other Arthurian tale is magic and Merlin with sheer fantasy backing it. In this presentation, the creator decided to go on the more historically accurate route. And it surprisingly works.
The one thing I think was missing, was the love triangle between Lancelot, Gwenevere and Arthur. But that's just me. I'm a stickler for the romance between Lancelot and Gwenevere, and there wasn't that much in the film. But it sets it up so that one can imagine that it becomes more later on from where the story takes place.
The camera shots are amazing. The way they shot this thing was innovative and unusual. Great angles and such.
Overall great movie.
House of Wax (2005)
I'll never look at a candle the same way again...
8 out of 10.
I really enjoyed this movie for multiple reasons. (one being the death of a certain socialite) The gore was satisfying, the plot riveting, the creep-factor increasingly present, the unnecessary sexuality showed up eventually and the special FX with the wax was well done. The one thing i didn't like about this movie is who "gets it" first. But that's just me.
While I didn't find this movie frightening, i found it effectively creepy. The very idea of being made into a wax sculpture to be on display forever is not appealing. The "big bad" in the movie is also a perfectly sketchy character(s). And there were these two parts that really made me cringe... okay, three. I recommend this movie. Watch it with the lights off.
And I would definitely think twice before entering a wax museum or small town again.
Blue Demon (2004)
Is it supposed to be funny?
A friend of mine rented this movie for her birthday party because she thought it would be scary. Well, while the scare factor was severely lacking, we were not disappointed. This movie is one of the funniest I've seen in a while!
The movie is about sharks that are programmed to protect, a corrupt government and terrorism. It's a political statement, basically. The CG stuff is pathetic, but amusing. The acting... well, we won't go there. (although Josh Hammond's character was good.) And the plot, is sketchy at best.
I recommend this movie, actually. Grab a bunch of friends that you can laugh with and pop this in. You'll have something to laugh about for ages!
Black Cadillac (2003)
"F**k, now we're really f**ked... I'm out of PEZ!"
I'm giving this movie a solid 8.
When I first popped the DVD in, I went to the bloopers. Mistake. They sucked, and therefore, my pre-conceived notion was that the movie, in turn would suck as well. Well, at first, it did. I'm not a big fan of the beginning of the movie. It seemed too, well mindless. I wrote off the movie as horrible after 15 minutes and took it out. Then I realized, I wanted to know who was in that Cadillac. I gave it another shot. And i'm glad I did. This movie turned out to surprise me. Randy Quaid, at first seemed... stereotypical, and there were a few repeated lines that got annoying. ("I'm going back to Yale" was one) And Jason Dohring's character first comes off as the whiny and irritating typical little brother, but by the end of the film, he's matured.
Now the character of "CJ" is my new hero, and I have a new perspective on deer...
The movie is about these three guys who go to Wisconsin to have an I.D. free good time. Which they find, until a fight forces them to head for home. They pick up a stranded police officer (Quaid) and give him a lift for a while. When they see a mysterious Black Cadillac following their fun-filled trip soon turns into a race for their lives.
I recommend this movie. If you hate the beginning, wait it out a while. It does get better. And the ending is great and satisfying.
