Love, Death & Robots: Bad Travelling (2022)
Season 3, Episode 2
10/10
Incredible stuff.
22 May 2022
Vibes of the Dishonored games dipped in Lovecraft. I could watch this type of gripping short story wrapped in digital animation all day.

Some of the shorts can be a little off, although I have enjoyed each one on some level, be it technical or having heart, but the likes of this and Beyond the Aquila Rift etc have been superb. Better and more exciting/unnerving than a lot of 'proper' films. More please.

Brilliant.

On the nose.

Maybe a few years ago I could have got a bit of enjoyment out of this, but in these hyper virtue signalling times, nah. Destroyed earth, evil AI, shots of oil derricks and a consumerism filled beached tanker in their first few steps in man land.

Yeah, it's a high school lesson in the evil of man.

So yeah, a few years ago I could have watched it in good faith, but I'm sick of boilerplate lessons from once entertainers. We get it, the worlds cabbaged. Just entertain us before the whole sh*t house goes up in flames please. You ain't changing anything, go back to fun.

Poppycock.

Had potential.

In the end, just a load of tropey, allegorical, woke nonsense. For something spread over several episodes it felt pretty un-fleshed out. Lowest common denominator rubbish. Shame as a couple of instances had potential. Poor.

The Book of Boba Fett (2021–2022)

"He's worth nothing to me"
13 January 2022
Just can't get with Morrison's take on the character. Yeah, early Fett wasn't exactly fleshed out but his iconic look and stoic screen time built up a mystique. He had an ignominious end but that didn't ruin any imagined persona for me. The sly American accent saying the line "he's worth a lot to me" was always perfect for Fett, he seemed a space arl arse. I accepted the change in the prequels because Jengo wasn't Boba and was played well enough anyway. Not in this? He has the charisma of a pebble and the teeth of an insta influencer. He's as threatening as a Jawa. And dumb to boot. Such a turgid show. They did Boba wrong.

Incredible scenes.

Incredible stuff. I've always loved The Beatles, they're both peerless and timeless. Their music has help get me through a lot of tough times, in fact, carrying on with the downbeat mood, one of the only claims to fame I'll ever have in my life is that I was born in the same Oxford St. Maternity Hospital as John Lennon (and that I nearly rented a flat directly facing where Stuart Sutcliffe was buried and my first home was next to Anfield Stadium, yeah that's more football lol). Tenuous I know, sorry. Anyway, this 3 part film from Peter Jackson blew me away and not only put certain clips I'd seen many times into context (George telling Paul he'd play anyway he asked, or not even play at all if he liked) but also turned the oft held myth that the band basically hated one another during the albums production. Yes their demise as a group is still felt through the footage but it shows a demise more out of a need to break free of the machine as opposed to any hate between the lads. Anyway, it's just a fantastic document to the greatest band the world had ever and will ever see. Superb.

Garbage
18 September 2021
Honestly, how many more times our we supposed to give this guy a chance, he's beyond a hack. This film made me feel nauseous, honestly. He can't get anything from the actors he directs, not just this movie, all his movies, the one or two ok movies, and looking back that's all they were ok, you realise they all have the same direction, just weird. He had one, maybe two, good ideas and he fluked it. I don't review often, and when I do it's usually praise, but this film tipped me over. No, more, no more mister Shyamalan. I'm done with his awful output. Guy got lucky and has pumped out garbage movie after garbage movie. He's rode on the back of one genuinely clever twist his entire carrier and he'll probably carry on but I'm definitely not riding along anymore. Terrible stuff, again. Avoid.

Astartes (2018– )

Superb.

I will probably do myself no favours saying this but...I know very little about 40K. Yes I know about GW and the board games and miniatures, I've even played a Warhammer game over on the Xbox 360, it was pretty good, but I have no insight into any lore or the universe that the franchise occupies.

What I do know is that this showed up in my YouTube recommended and I preceded to watch. Wow. So glad I did because this was something else. It grabbed me from the off, there is something more going on here other than just great visuals. I'm not savvy in film/cinema speak but I'll say this then end my review, it gave me a vibe I very rarely get from films these days, short or no, and that vibe is mystery. It dripped with it. A touch of the Space Jockey if you will.

I'm off to read up on Warhammer things. To the creative behind this, don't pull a Prometheus.

Cavill nails it.

I quite like the game, never read the book, love the show. From my experience of The Witcher 3 Henry nails Geralt. It's early doors yet but from a really enjoyable first series I can see the show going on from strength to strength and having more time to breathe thus ironing out the criticisms being levelled at it. Not from me mind, I grasped what was happening and its time shenanigans early on.

Better than I'd feared.
20 December 2019
I enjoyed the film, it had a good few Star Wars feels. I'd began to dislike the new heroes after the awful TLJ but this film shows that given a bit more care and planning from Disney we could have had some decent new heroes. Unfortunately the trilogy wasn't planned well at all, no thought or heart was really there from the off. But like I say this definitely goes some way to right the wrongs of the horrific 2nd film and if we had perhaps gotten JJ Abrams, who I'm not a massive fan of, three picture cohesion then the films wouldn;t be so down in peoples estimation. So overall I was surprised and enjoyed JJ's attempt to put a plaster over the wound of the second. It's just a shame they had so little planning for such a cherished property and needed to roll out the Scotch tape to patch things up.

The Mandalorian (2019– )
1/10
I'm out.
14 November 2019
EDITED* I've watched the first episode twice now and have to say it goes a long way to help wash away the bad taste of Disney's two sequels. Rogue One was fantastic, Solo was an ok romp but an unwanted story. I won't mention what I think of the other two, no...actually I will, they are trash. So back to this, well it was a little light on great dialogue but the components and essence of Star Wars is there. And that's the thing, the thing missing from the trash fire sequels, the essence of Star Wars. If it keeps that, which I feel it will, I can see this going on to be a brilliant and needed work in the amazing and as of now massively untapped Universe George created. So much potential in said Universe and hopefully the Mandalorian is the first of many small screen endeavours that comes along and starts to fill that potential. So yeah it's on the right track. It has the feels and seems to be the creation of people who get SW, unlike those behind the dismal sequels. I have spoken.

EDIT* And after a brilliant two seasons I've had to change my score and edit my review. This is now trash. Utter drivel at the level of the Pamphlet of Bobbins or Oh No-One. Sorry. Anyway, I'll rewatch rips of Andor and ditch Disney+ They're now beyond the pail.

It tried to kill the past but thankfully the past kicks its butt.
29 May 2018
I like strong women, I love multiculturalism, I think their struggles have a huge role to play in films, but...I hate bad writing and nonsensical plot points. I can't believe anyone who feels strongly about the struggle for either of those mentioned above would think the Mary Sueism of Rey or the poor handling of Fin etc benefits the cause. For Rey there is no reality, no learning and growing she just has it all from the off. Not only is this detrimental toward any message to females especially the young, it's horrible from a story point of view. Anyway I could rant about what a mess the writer and director made of this film or how it retroactively made me reassess TFA and dislike that effort even more but life is too short.

Star Wars I still love you no matter how much Disney has tried to kill your past. Rogue One was fun btw but everything else can go jettison out of an escape pod hatch. I will not watch anymore of this Disney tripe and I will stay clear of making any further criticism of their horrible non cannon rubbish, as I'm offended to be labelled a misogynistic racist right winger (I'm non of those things Disney).

The Force will always be strong with me and I miss George, even the prequels were a lot, lot better.

So sad 1/10 because 0 doesn't count.
