Homeward Bound: The Incredible Journey (1993)
How could anyone not rate this movie a 10?!
This is one of the greatest animal movies ever. As a kid it was fun and entertaining, but everytime I watch it as an adult it's overwhelming with emotional tears of sadness and joy. I suspect low ratings probably come from the fact that being 1993, the animals speech is voiceover rather than moving their mouths through special effects, but I think it's more genuine this way, because the interaction between the humans and animals isn't manipulated. If you're a pet lover, and especially dog owner, then this movie will make you appreciate your dog much more. Other movies that have the same effect are things like Marley and Me, or Hachi.
The Big Bang Theory: The Stockholm Syndrome (2019)
Very anticlimactic
Considering the whole superasymmetry thing was fictitious, I expected the finale to be about Sheldon and Amy dealing with their theory being disproven, being consoled by friends, and was kind of hoping that Sheldon and Amy would also be pregnant, so that they would discover more joy in parenthood than some award. Even without those things happening, I expected some twist from the writers that would be much more emotional. I realize some people can suspend their disbelief about them winning an award for something fake, but that's something I couldn't.
The Silence (2019)
Later part of the movie ruins the rest
This movie started like a suspenseful, monster movie. However, later into the movie the focus becomes less on the monsters. It really seemed much more compelling than something like The Birdbox until the later part. Also, much like The Birdbox the viewer never gets a real conclusion, and is left with a fairly anticlimactic ending. I would say most people curious about the movie should avoid watching it, because they will be disappointed with the end.
Spirit Riding Free (2017)
Great show for fans of Westerns, fans of horses, and fans of cartoons.
First, viewers should be aware this show is a spin-off of the movie. The original characters are not in this, rather this show takes place years after the original movie following the adventures of the human companion of Spirit's son, who she also names Spirit.
Second, the horse is not the main character. The main character is a girl who goes by the name of Lucky. The horses still have all their personality, but there is no narration for Spirit. In comparison, the movie had Spirit's thoughts narrated by Matt Damon, or his emotions expressed through singing by Bryan Adams.
All that aside, I really enjoy the series. The horses don't talk, and keeping in line with the movie they express themselves well with horse sounds. Lucky is a great example of a protagonist, having the typical passion of a main character for adventure. The supporting characters all have good, individual personalities, and some ongoing stories. There's even at least one reoccurring villain.
The only problem I have with the series is some of the liberties the show takes with the period's culture. Mostly that social advancements of the 20th century are commonplace in the series. The biggest one being the fact that Pru and her dad are African-American, but no one notices. However, the series did have a historically accurate Christmas episode, which was a huge relief, as many writers would have attempted to remove the religious and traditional aspects of an Old West Christmas; they actually used church music throughout the episode.
In comparison to other similar tween/teen girl animated shows, such as Monster High or Equestria Girls, this one is on the much more well written side. The plots are more typical of a general audience cartoon, and not merely feminine in nature, making it enjoyable for anyone.
The Belko Experiment (2016)
Absolutely awful with too many flaws to count
This movie didn't do anything right.
It starts out with pointless boring introductions of characters by showing them talk about random things; a good movie would have jumped right into the opening conflict.
The protagonist is one of the worst characters in the movie, and therefore the viewer has no vested interest to see him survive. The villain and his methods are completely unbelievable, and the existence of said villain is just to try and add some drama to the movie, but it actually makes it worse than if the movie tried to be realistic in dealing with the situation.
There's nothing new, interesting, or creative about the movie, because of the forced chaos by the writers. The movie would have been ten times more interesting, if the characters were rational, it had a slower pace, and the movie had focused on the choices people make to determine the best ethics for who should live or die. They almost had a moment like that, but then ruined it by having the villain start to randomly choose people for no reason.
The ending was absurd, because apparently trained, armed guards are not capable of drawing a weapon on someone who tries to lunge free of those restraining them.
Yu-Gi-Oh!: The Dark Side of Dimensions (2016)
Glorious Return of Duel Monsters to the Big Screen
This movie was amazing; especially, when compared to the series. In length it is the equivalent to a 7-part episode, and they would be 7 of the best episodes of the series. It has a very similar feeling to watching the duel with Pegasus or the Egyptian God card duels of the series.
The animation is superb, and though a little bit of CGI/2.5D is used, it is very mild, looks good, and much more clean than is often seen in Pokemon movies.
The beginning is a little slow at times, but the rest of the movie is very well paced with plenty of dueling and plenty of lore. It is a wondrous follow-up to the Duel Monsters series. In a period when many long-awaited sequels and remakes of well-known franchises are failing, this one brings back all the nostalgia and joy of Duel Monsters.
