Sam Was Here (2016)
Not your typical horror movie
I saw the bad ratings on IMDb before watching the movie and it made me kind of sad 'cause I was really impatient to watch this movie since it came out in film festivals, so I started watching this movie preparing myself to be disappointed. I wasn't.
I really loved it, the major complain people have about this movie is that nothing is explained, so yeah of course this movie doesn't tell you what you're supposed to understand or see but encourages you to interpret and solve the "mystery" yourself; which is something I love in horror movies.
Spoilers: Here's what I understood (to read if you didn't get the movie at all): Sam really is the murderer, he killed his family; but he doesn't admit it and is in denial. A clue for this is the notes he leaves everywhere "sam was here", which are really ominous and not something someone asking for help would do but more of a note a serial killer would leave. Later in the movie we learn someone in the motel died, which is the person we see hiding in the bathroom on the surveillance camera in the beginning, Sam also killed that guy. Then for the "Eddy" character, I'm not 100% sure if he is Sam's conscience or some kind of supernatural "Judge" type figure, I guess it kind of depends if you wanna keep the movie realistic or not. Same with the red light in the sky, it could either be just Sam's hallucination or an ominous judgment symbol. For the ending, the people in town did justice themselves by killing Sam.
To conclude, despite the bad ratings, I think Sam was here is a great horror movie, but maybe not for everyone.
The Human Centipede III (Final Sequence) (2015)
A "not for everyone" funny comedy horror
I think the reason this movie has such a bad rating is that some people don't get that this is a comedy horror, if you try to watch it seriously or if you expect something like the first two movies then yeah you're probably not gonna enjoy yourself, but then again it's not how it is meant to be watched.
Comedy horrors are extremely hard to get right because it combines the most difficult genres to get right, not everybody laughs at the same things and not everybody is scared of the same things. This movie relies on shock humor and extremely exaggerated acting. I find Dieter Laser as Bill Boss hilarious and same goes for Laurence R Harvey as Dwight, they're a very funny duo and very memorable characters. But then again, if screaming profanities and saying the word "cock" every two seconds isn't your humor and ball cutting scenes aren't your type of horror then you're going to hate this movie.
I'm giving it a 10 while acknowledging that this movie isn't for everyone, but that doesn't make it a bad movie that just makes it a controversial movie. You might love it, you might hate it, there's no in between and I think Tom Six doesn't want an in between, he wants strong reactions and that's exactly what he gets with each of his movie. So bravo Tom Six.
VooDoo (2017)
The good, the bad and the "meh"
First of all I have to say that I really wanted to like this movie, it seemed promising and refreshing.
I'll start with the good parts: the first actual scare (which is the one all the promo is based on) is really good, no need for loud noises it is a good and effective scare. Then the first appearance of the "shadow figure with red eyes" is also something that made me go "oh it might actually be good". The idea of the main character going into hell and seeing all these tortures and creatures was also a good idea, good idea not well treated except for that Satan sex scene which was actually a fun and disturbing scene.
Then the bad parts: the opening scene is never talked about again in the movie, it's good to show a cool and creepy scene but you need to do something with it otherwise it has no purpose other than to be there. Another big problem for me is that you don't get attached enough to the main character because you don't know enough about her, they just throw sad facts about her at you in order to make you sad when something bad happens to her but it doesn't work. And finally the biggest problem for me is that they show too much, the hellish creatures were a really good idea but you see them way too clearly and often, every time they did something cool they made it last too long and the scary effect wasn't there anymore (also the ending scene was kind of shitty and predictable).
Overall it was a decent movie, there were some really good ideas but sadly they weren't executed well, still it did have its entertaining moments but it definitely wasn't a masterpiece.
