No Reasons (2016)
Give this man your money
Some weeks ago I was fortunate enough to see Death Walks, a no budget movie with twists a plenty. Then this weekend I got to see No Reasons, a movie from the same director.
No Reasons is a slow burning drama that slowly turns from being fairly normal, to un-normal, slowly all the plots merge together like fingers. It's a freaky offering from a rookie director that really starts to show what the movies creator is capable of.
So Spencer Hawken made Death Walks for nothing, then No Reasons for around £15k, which i'm told is nothing for a film; now trust me when I say this No Reasons is a polished work of art, a screwed up work of art, but still a work of art. This makes me think what on earth could this guy do with twice that amount, three times the amount, its mind boggling.
Death Walks has a style, a kind of jolly style, No Reasons has nothing like that, its like a humanized version of a Serbian Film, every bit as screwed up.
When the end credits began to roll the audience was plundered into silence, but then a lone individual let out an expletive, and shortly afterwards, a mid credits twist that will mean A LOT to those that have seen Death Walks a huge round of applause rang out.
The music is astounding, camera-work slick, performances great.
No Reasons shows that we have a new name to watch, Christopher Nolan, your cards are marked.
Curse of the Witching Tree (2015)
What?!?!?
I cannot work out what offended me the most, the poor sound or the diabolical colours of the screen. Oh no, I got it wrong, it was the terrible script and barrage of copyright infringements.
I have never heard so many mentions of pop culture by name or brand in a movie ever, I'm not sure whether the makers realised that you have to get permission to do this, or whether the likes of Spongebob and Harry Potter's creators paid the makers to mention them. Hmmmmm What do you think?
Witching Tree is wrong from about three minutes in, the colour grade has gone wrong, all the colours don't gel correctly. I'm sure the makers like the look, the audience however really do not.
The story is so so, but normally solid performers like Dean Maskell betrayed by the terrible sound, in his scenes the sound is so bad, you cannot even hear him.
There are good moments, like a missing kid. But what follows is bad and sad, it tries, but fails.
How does stuff like this make it to DVD, sadly i never lost too much money i picked it up in Poundland.
Hooligan Legacy (2016)
Strangely awkward
I really enjoyed the opening minutes of Hooligan Legacy, and i really thought just for a moment that this was going to be the Hooligan film that mattered. But after the football club raid it all went wrong.
The ideas were there, but the delivery was all wrong.
awkward moments
1) Terry Dwyer just randomly standing on the right of the screen while the main character talks to a junkie former friend.
2) "hero" punches woman in the face killing her instantly
3) The terrible fire, with about as much emotion as a breaking of wind.
4) Lack of ending, as the film ends on a whimper not a bang.
5) Unexplained everything.
The acting is good for the majority, but the story and delivery are just diabolical. There is no feeling of any emotion at any point through the film, would could be maturely and cleverly handled is dealt with in a very petty and insignificant manner.
This could have been a contender, but sadly not.
Wandering Rose (2015)
Nowhere near as bad as people make out
This film really confuses me, not in the films content or anything like that. In the rating. To read the reviews the films makers have committed some sort of atrocity, but this is far from the case.
Little Devil (Demon Baby/Wandering Rose) is a competently made, great indie film, it's shot beautifully, has nice performances, and does not try EVER to be something it's not. Yes at times it's a little slow as the creators battle with trying to achieve suspense, but beyond that it's all very very good.
I understand the movies budget was about £10,000 and trust me, that's a great return on a small investment.
The film tells a story of a couple on retreat for a holiday, but things are not all as they seem, lots of sub-plots occur and the film is a true mystery. The pay off may not be as strong as the build up, but still its a much better movie than other reviewers here make out.
Essex Vendetta (2016)
Another diabolical British movie
I think you struggle with this one, because Essex Vendetta starts so positively, then all of a sudden your on a crash course of awfulness.
The editing is diabolical, sound mix..... what sound mix. The attack on a Russian hairdressing assistant its creatively shocking, an editing abortion so shocking my five year old son could do better.
Westbrook appears off her nut on drugs, alcohol or something else. Rhodes plays the same character she always plays, McKell does his best Dennis Waterman a'la Little Britain sings the theme tune, writes the theme tune, acts in the film, writes the story.
The film feels like it was made up as they went along, the Maltese locations swapped sometimes for Maldon, the rest actually in Malta.
Despite the poor editing, poor acting, and poor script, the worst part of the movie is the awful sound, recorded and "mixed" I use the term lightly terrible.
Definitely a film to avoid.
Death Walks (2016)
I expected the worst
i went to see the premiere last Friday, i was dragged along by a mate who was in the film. I hate zombie films, and i thought the trailer for this one was really bad.
I have never been so wrong in my entire life, i loved this film from 10 minutes in. It looks so cool, yet it cost nothing to make. the acting was great, and apparently most of the cast had never acted before.
The music was just epic on every level. I cannot believe how much fun this film is, i laughed loads, its not scary, its just mysterious. I came out the cinema wanting to watch it again. Really liked the character Jon. special effects were not good, if there actually were any. The end credits sequence was amazing. Very, very funny film. Loved it, I think its going to reach cult status.
