De Palma (2015)
Greatness
Who would ever have thought watching one man speak for nearly two hours could be so addictive. De Palma is a mango icicle to director, and this very candid interview/documentary shows the inner working of a genius mind.
From his early student films to the height of his career Carrie, The Untuchables, Scarface. de Palma holds no prisoners and rightly so. He tells it as it is, discusses the pitfalls of the industry system and shows newbie directors how to break free
The doc goes passed at the blink of an eye, and is such addictive viewing, I'd be prepared to watch it again right now.... in fact..,
I Am Hooligan (2016)
Plopsie
I have seen some bad stuff lately, but oh my days this is an absolute atrocity.
I like how people compare it to A Clockwork Orange, I think the comparison was that at some point Stanley Kubrick went for a crap, thus may be what that crap evolved into.
I appreciate low budget films have a struggle, they have to strive to be something, this is just abysmal.
Ruling out pool cue, golf buddy cam, and headboard cam which are without a doubt creative, if not shocking additions to this otherwise pathetic effort at filmmaking, this film offers nothing, nothing of any value to anyone in any way shape or form.
I knew it was going to be bad as soon as it started, the stock effect I AM HOLLIGAN title credit on some sort of slapdash background (like kids wallpaper), then the slow walk through the council estate of its lead, the same walk you will see half a dozen times.
Then the train, oh yes the train seen through the railway fence, you must see this same train going back and forth 100 times, exactly the same footage.
I feel bad reviewing this so harshly, as my good friend has a role in it, and I told then how bad the film was.
The film has not one endearing feature, no message, brings nothing new to the table, it's just a complete dogs abortion all round.
Mob Handed (2016)
Pedo hell
So I just watched this. I cannot describe what I've just seen, but as no doubt you can imagine it was not good. In fact, it was diabolical. You may ask you where many of the movies stars have been, as huge numbers of them are faces of yesterday bought into the present. Clearly in their departure from the big screen, or small screen, they have found things tough, and in some cases forgotten to act.
I heard about Mob Handed because Kim of Kim and Aggie appeared in promo pictures from the film, yet from the final cut, she's missing. I can only assume she saw the film and asked to be removed. I'm forced to remember a line by Hotel Inspectors Alex Politzi in which she say "I always think I've scraped the bottom of the barrel, but I haven't." That is an accurate statement for this movie.
This is far and wide the worst movie I have ever seen in my entire life, terrible acting, wrongly portrayed reactions, confusing lacking plot. And the worst lead actress of any movie of all time. This film is shocking.
Wandering Rose (2015)
Delivers on some levels
I understand from other reviews that Little Devil cost less than £10k, on this basis I'm wading in with an 8 star review. Little Devil is not a brilliant film, however it is a brilliant achievement for the cash laid out. It's not the usual cheap British fare, this is a glossy looking film, that had been made with great time, care and attention.
The plot is very thin, but so are some of the best movies, the performances above the line for Low budget Brit horror, it's one of those films that clearly has the edge.
Beautifully shot, great sound, above standard story, nice performances. I can't really say much more than you get in the synopsis, give it a chance, and consider the films value.
Death Walks (2016)
One to watch
I was thrilled to attend the world premiere of death walks on 15th July.
First of all I need to break down my vote, I have voted the film a 10 based on the fact the movie, ready for this... Cost no money to make. The people that made the film, either contributed talent, time, or blagged stuff.
Based on the fact the movie had no money, I've given it a ten, because you simply could not achieve better for nothing.
The film is about a shopping centre that experiences a zombie invasion in the middle of the night. This huge cast of characters spend the night not really understanding the threat that is inside their very centre. The whole cast act very relaxed about what's happening, because nobody actually experiences what is wrong with the zombies, it's just a group of heavily scarred people that just turn up and "hang out" not doing anything bad to anyone, until that is, an individual is left alone. I was amazed at the whopping twist about 3/4 of the way in, and in the last five minutes another twist. This film is funny, thrilling, has wonderful music, lasts the right amount of time, and gives all the traits a horror fan really likes without really being scary. It's a fairly light 60 minutes before it all gets a bit dark.
The film followed with a question and answer section with most of the main cast, during which we discovered that most of the cast had never acted before, I have to say there were two bad performances in the film, the rest were just great. Everyone on the stage seemed genuinely pleased to be part of the project, and director Spencer Hawken was just a delight. The film had technical issues, not just in the making but on the night, when the correct copy failed to play. But this didn't matter.
I had no involvement in the film, but I live in the town it was filmed, in fact in the same building. I was incredibly proud of all the people, I was amazed to see a legend like Francesca not only in the film, but there just 8 metres away from me on stage. I'm so proud of everyone, to make a movie this amazing, for free, and in the town I love so much.
You really MUST see this movie.
