Yogen (2004)
Didn't know what to expect....
A surprisingly good movie! When I first saw the box I didn't know what to expect. I figured it would be a low budget looking foreign film with blood and guts oozing everywhere. What I saw though, was a well crafted, suspenseful, chilling and bizarre film. At first the thought of a "killer newspaper" was kind of corny, but after watching this movie, it only makes the movie more appealing.
A guy is haunted by a newspaper that is called the "paper of death", which shows itself to random people detailing horrible deaths of people who are in their communities. A demon newspaper if you will. The main actor finds a newspaper clipping in a phone both that details his daughters death, that happens that same day. In horror he watches as his daughter is crushed in their car by a dump truck and explodes. From that point on the movie takes off on a bizarre trip into the supernatural while this lead character and his ex-wife try to uncover the source of this newspaper and the reason for their daughter's death.
There are some shocking images in the movie, like his wife being smashed by a truck on the side of the road, or when dead people start to contact him in all their gross dead states, one scene in particular shows a girl that has just died appearing to him in a hallway with her face ripped out of her head.
I would recommend this to anyone who is looking for a good foreign horror movie.
Red Eye (2005)
Wes Craven is STILL SLUMPING! Disappointment galore!
Got to see an advanced screening last night and although this wasn't his worst movie ever, it certainly comes close. Action? Suspense? Thrills? Did we all watch the same movie? I can crack my knuckles with more suspense than this movie has.
I found the story to be extremely predictable and very unsatisfying for a Wes Craven movie. I would have settled for a guy hiding behind a door and jumping out screaming RRAAAAHHHH!!! at the camera, at least then it would have been thrilling & suspenseful.
Wes Craven was once dubbed the "king of terror", but he definitely sheds himself of that prestigious honor in this film. Don't get me wrong, the casting was good, I mean Rachel McAdams held this movie on looks alone, and Cillian Murphy did a pretty good job at being a bad guy, but this movie won't have a long run in the theaters. It's being promoted as a suspenseful/thrilling/roller coaster ride of a movie, yet the coaster never leaves the station.
It had the potential to be a great movie, the plot was "interesting", but that's where it stops. The premise was enticing, but this movie doesn't deliver. The whole airplane sequence was just a filler for a lackluster ending that left nothing to the imagination. Bad guy meets girl, bad guy threatens girl, girl stabs bad guy in the throat, bad guy chases girl through airport, girl escapes, rocket gets launched at a hotel blowing up a few rooms, girl kicks bad guys butt, and nobody but the bad guys die, the end.
This movie had absolutely no plot twists, no suspense, and a slight hint of drama that never really materialized, but it did have a total of 2 thrills. That being a rocket being launched at a Miami Hotel and the bad guy getting a pen jabbed in his throat. End of thrills. End of story.
For a Hit-man, Jackson Ripner was a WIMP! He got his butt beat all over the house and in the end he barely lays a hand on anybody, and he's supposed to be a vicious murderous hit-man!
Entertaining if you like a movie that's very easy to follow because you can tell what was gonna happen long before anything happened. I can't say it was the worst movie I've ever seen, but this is one movie that should have gone straight to DVD!
