Doctor Who: The Crimson Horror (2013)
Decent
A decent episode. I'd say the opening is really strong, and it kind of gets less engaging once it hits that flashback, which could have been a bit more concise. Smith is great as always, but I don't know that I really like series 7's depiction of Clara. She's young and pretty here, and that's it, really.
Vastra and Jenny are nice, I like Vastra's joy at the "65 million years ago" line. I think the episode just becomes kind of unengaging. It's not a very tense or fun finale, and frankly Murray Gold's music gets too triumphant too fast. I'm writing this in 2023, so the show has had a different composer, and I do think that a more subdued style fits the show better. Although there are some nice compositions, especially at the beginning of the episode.
A decent script from Mark Gatiss, I did like Ada's story a lot, and Mr. Sweet is suitably gross.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow (2023)
Last 10 minutes...
I need lots of characters for this so I'm gonna write them. The gist is that the first 40 minutes or so grated and then the last 10 were among the best this show has ever been. Great lead performance, where we finally get under La'an's skin. Strong direction and music too.
It's a bit of a shame, to me, that the first 40 minutes were so drab. I didn't think the writing was great at showing chemistry between the two leads.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to where this show goes, this has been a strong second season so far, and the last 10 minutes of this were phenomenal.
So far, solid season! 9/10
9/10 because it ended so well.
Colin in Black and White: Cornrows (2021)
Liked it!
Final note it ends on is a bit badly pitched. Colin Kaepernick's delivery isn't really good. He's definitely not an actor.
However, the rest was good. Decent performances, it really captures that sense of discovery as a young adult, but discovery of yourself in a positive, beautiful, innocent way. I think Heartstopper depicts something similar to this.
Watched for one of my classes. Decent episode, even if the very last 10 seconds or so don't land on the right note.
Wondering if they shot this digitally and then processed it to look like it was shot on films. The child actors were all very good.
The White Lotus: New Day (2021)
Mmmm.... not as good as the first
I dunno, the first one felt good, but this one just... wasn't? I really don't think this needs to be 50+ minutes long, some of the transition shots just felt drawn out for no reason. Some interesting threads for sure but the first half of the episode was better than the second.
The music is good but the mixing is a bit too loud. Some good cinematography, the last shot with the whale was nice.
Wondering where things will go. Jennifer Coolidge is good, the whole cast is good, really. I dunno, the bit with Armond taking the drugs felt a bit wierd though.
Have a few more characters to fill to be able to post. Those are my thoughts.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Memento Mori (2022)
Solid
Really good. Strong emotional core at the end, great score, juggles it's plot threads well, and the characters start to breathe a bit. Loved that bit if slow mo as they got close to the black hole. Solid ep.
Star Trek: Strange New Worlds: Ghosts of Illyria (2022)
Coming Out
A really good episode. About what we hide, why we hide it, and the connection that can come when we stop hiding. I liked it. Some kinda creepy bits too, the light beings were a bit unsettling clawing their way into where Spock and Pike were.
Reminded me of Doctor Who's "42," an episode where a living sun infects crew members of a ship.
Please Like Me: Rhubarb and Custard (2013)
Liked it a lot!
I enjoyed that quite a bit! Funny, sweet second half of the episode. Love the "discovering gayness" storyline. Quirky characters & score. I liked it! The touch of sadness at the end added some humanity/groundedness to the show, I wanna see where these characters end up.
Abbott Elementary: Work Family (2022)
Pretty good.
Seems like an episode about how for some of us, it takes a while to grow up. Liked the conversation in the rain & the way it was shot/edited. Excited to see Jacob's boyfriend.
The Long Call: Episode #1.1 (2021)
Not bad!
Watched because of Pearl Mackie, and thought it was solid. I'm definitely invested in what will happen next. Main detective is also played well, and great to see a tender gay relationship at the center. Definitely influenced by Broadchurch, but i don't think that's a bad thing. Will keep watching.
Suspicion: Persons of Interest (2022)
Can't think of a reason to keep watching
Performances were good,
The beginning was cool
But that's it. Why should I keep watching? Not a good pilot episode in my mind. It doesn't make me care about the characters or the plot.
Schitt$ Creek: Grad Night (2017)
Terrific finale
Love that for a bit of this, part of it is about a parents failure to their children and their partners and other people being able to show them the love they deserve
And how the second half is the parents, finally getting a second chance, trying to do what they previously didn't.
Freaking great. AND DAVID AND PATRICK WENT ON A DATE?????? YESSSIRRRRRRR.
Schitt$ Creek: Estate Sale (2016)
Mattress
It's great to see the Roses bidding like wild for a mattress they can't afford. I thought it was pretty wonderful to have these really upper class & sneering characters (mainly Moira lol) brought to a place where they simple appreciate having a nice, working mattress.
The Falcon and the Winter Soldier: New World Order (2021)
Anthony Mackie is great
7.5-8
Anthony Mackie was legit great. Not sure how I feel about some of the strange close ups but overall really liked it.
The Amazing Race: Give Me a Beard Bump (2020)
Editor was the MVP
Whoever edited this did a really good job LOL. It was a good episode with a lot of tough challenges.
I May Destroy You: Someone Is Lying (2020)
Halfway through
And this show is so so stressful. Every interaction. But it's really good so far. Just a really heavy subject matter.
The Vast of Night (2019)
Amazing film
Love the film. It avoids every cliche possible, has very good leading performances, and great direction. I hope the score is released on spotify soon because it was amazing.
Community: Critical Film Studies (2011)
100% the best episode so far
I haven't loved Community, but mainly because I feel that there isn't enough focus on character. This episode changes that. It's well written, intriguing, well performed, and well scored. I really, really liked it.
Community: Beginner Pottery (2010)
Really liked this one
Really loved how this episode treated Shirley, Pierce, and Jeff. The little arcs for all of them were sweet, satisfying, and got the audience connected to the characters with some emotional payoff.
Honestly, I wish we spent more of the episode on the boat, because that was a lot of fun. 8 out of 10
The Eddy: Julie (2020)
Better than episode 1
That was good. Really good. It's well performed and this was a stressful, chaotic, and concerning look into Julie's head.
Again, liking Chazelle's style.
Never Have I Ever: ...been the loneliest boy in the world (2020)
This show is so good
Seriously. The tone, look, soundtrack and storyline for this entire series is spot on. The writing isn't always perfect, but it's so much fun to watch and you really root for Devi and Ben. I'm surprised at how much I like this show and how easy it is to watch. Mindy Kaling nailed it.
I also feel like this show is really well directed. It's colorful, stylish, well paced, and the feel and tone of it all works really well.
EDIT: I want to quickly shout out composer Joseph Stevens, who is killing it every episode. Seriously. His music is the perfect fit for the show.
Never Have I Ever: ...gotten drunk with the popular kids (2020)
Good up until that last line
I like this show. It's not the best written in my opinion- some of the jokes feel forced (they can feel more like the writers trying to add in a funny line rather than something that comes from the character) and often it's a little too expository or on the nose- but it still remains a charming, fun, and pretty funny depiction of high school.
I'm not the target audience for this show, but I enjoy watching it. However, that last line in this episode was just so unnecessary and forced. I think it's great that the show has LGBT+ representation, but it has already been made very clear to the audience that Devi's friend might be gay, so having her type that she is gay into a keyboard for a robot to say it out loud just feels really cheesy and unnecessary. I guess maybe it's a cliffhanger of her coming to terms with her identity, but I don't think it works, and I think the "cliffhanger" is unnecessary as we're already invested into how her and her sexuality will play out later on in the series.
It's a good show, and while this was a pretty enjoyable episode for the most part, that last line was just not a good way to end it
The Eddy: Elliot (2020)
Immersive cinematography & great atmosphere
It's well shot, well performed, and atmospheric. The opening few minutes reminded me why I love Chazelle's work: gritty, immersive, and realist.
I wasn't blown away by the pilot, however it's a solid start for the show and I will keep on watching.
Doctor Who: Spyfall: Part One (2020)
Really dissapointed. It's an ambitious episode, but not executed well
I'll upload my full review in a bit, but Spyfall part one was disappointing.
I have a couple of big issues with the episode.
1. The direction. LOTS of missed opportunities to make things creepy or tense. There's a noticeable lack of reaction shots. Walsh and Whittaker turn in weak performances. The humor fell flat for me the entire episode.
2. The writing. The jokes just weren't funny for me. Again, too much exposition. I remember noticing that I zoned out the moment O began talking about tech companies at the house. And when it comes to the Doctor, her characterization is frustrating. Previous Doctors commanded attention, were always the smartest in the room and had authority. Whittaker's Doctor is always frazzled by everything and playing catch up, never in control of what's going on. It's a disservice to the fans, the character, and the actress.
3. The music. There were some good bits in the score, but the constant music in *every scene* makes things feel same-y. Fun scenes aren't fun when there's dramatic atmospheric music in the background.
Overall, it's not an inspired effort. I don't think the visuals were that great, Whittaker wasn't good (why is her Doctor so devoid of authority?), Walsh wasn't good. It's not a good start and probably my least favorite opener. I'm looking forward to a new director next week.
Little Women (2019)
Absolutely Incredible
I went into Little Women not having read the novel or having seen any of the adaptations. It's the best movie I've seen this year. Everything is superlative: Ronan's performance, Deslpat's score, Le Saux's cinematography, Gonchor's production design, and of course Gerwig's writing and direction.
There are multiple times where this film looks like a painting. The scenes at the beach in particular are stunning, with one shot of Beth and Jo with sand swirling around them being my favorite of the film.
I really hope this film isn't overlooked at the Academy Awards like it was at the Golden Globes. Gerwig absolutely deserves a best director nomination and I'd give her and the film the win. It's that good.

The Mandalorian: Chapter 2: The Child (2019)
A LOT better than episode 1
I didn't like episode 1 at all. It wasn't bad, but there was almost nothing good in it. Episode 2 was a different story. While still not perfect, the cinematography and music were much better and it was nice to spend more time with the "I have spoken" character. The battle scene with the tusk-creature, the Mandalorian, and Baby Yoda was great. However, I think the episode was a little too long (which is why it's a 6 to a 7 and not higher) since not that much really happened. Still, good episode and much better than episode 1
