The Hitman's Bodyguard: Dangerous Women (2017)
Great fun but beware of language
Loved, loved, loved this movie and I wish I could share it with more of the family! But way too many f-bombs and vulgar language for some. Such a shame. Would have easily given a 10. I encourage anyone who doesn't care about bad language to watch this for the wild action and laughs. The cast performance was fantastic. I never in a million years thought Selma Hayek could be that hysterical. She held her own with Reynolds and Jackson--both comedically and physically. And let me tell you, the lady can kick some butt in a lot of action scenes! I hope that there are many more sequels, but sensitive ears beware! Not really for children or the mother-in-law!
The Man from Toronto (2022)
Dare you not to laugh!
Sometimes you need to watch a movie that is so wild and crazy, yet totally entertaining. This one will make you laugh out loud! The premise is a stretch, but sucks you into believing pretty quickly. But it's the performances of Hart and Harrelson that pull it off--with hysterical results. I don't know how much ad-libbing was done on camera, but I bet it took nerves of steel for those two guys to not crack each other up during filming.
This movie was a winner for my action-loving hubby, too. You know it's a win-win when both husbands and wives tell their respective friends to watch it. Go ahead... I dare you not to laugh!
The Laundry Guy (2021)
Grandma knows best!
Cheap vodka, soap flakes laundry bar soap and oxygenated bleach are now on my shopping list! Who knew? Exceeded my expectations and loved his food & table tips, too. Ready to watch more!
Coming 2 America (2021)
Oh, c'mon! Lighten up!
Didn't expect much after reading reviews here, but was pleasantly surprised. I have one thing to say to negative reviewers--GET OVER YOURSELF! It's not a psychological or cerebral film, it's FUN! That's it. Weren't movies originally invented to entertain the masses?
This film is packed with classic stars with decades of acting and entertaining experience under their belts. Why not sit back and enjoy. Arsenio isn't Charlton Heston, but neither was Bob Hope or Jerry Lewis! So what? Road to Bali was fun to watch, but face it, not a lot of redeeming intellectual value! And that's ok.
Eddie Murphy's acting has always been an enigma to me. He's not a comedian trying to play act. He has always appeared to take it seriously, as seriously as Eddie Murphy can, but he's really better at it than most give him credit for. I may be wrong, but Beverly Hills Cop is pretty much the standard to rate comedy films and he was a natural for that role. Same with Trading Places and first Coming to America.
I started watching Murphy from his start as a comedian. From wild child to arrogant superstar, to questionable superstar, to out of spotlight family man, to surprisingly good father, to his return as a wiser senior actor and person. This movie is fun, great fun to see the gang from first Coming to America together again. Was fun to laugh and reminisce about "Mcdougal's" and great reminder to never jump to conclusions about race, wealth and social status. I noticed the first film is back on the top viewed list. Was a film with an enlightening message to us when we were the young adults (we're the seniors now!) and great lesson for current generations.
So don't watch this expecting anything. Just enjoy and laugh a little. Better yet, get some popcorn and watch both with your kids or friends. Not a bad way to spend a few hours!
Skyline (2010)
Unfairly low ratings for independent film
Don't kept the ratings here fool you. Not bad and amazing when you find out it was independently financed. Great specials effects. Not a particularly original script, but once the dysfunctional friends were gone, the core group of actors took off with solid performances. Special effects cost 10 million alone or so and that quality and made the film. Ending set up for a sequel that was nearly a decade in the making. Going to watch all 3 movies in one sitting so will keep moving!
Beyond Skyline (2017)
Honestly better than these ratings are leading you to believe!
As much as I wanted to see this movie be a continuation of the first movie, it was entertaining in it's own right. It had a few moments of connection to the first Skyline. But spent lot of time setting up for the third movie in series, too. We watched all 3 in one sitting and made a great evening of stunning special effects, but storyline could have been a bit tighter in each one. Acting was better as each movie progressed but some solid performances all around. Take a chance and enjoy the show.
Willow Creek (2013)
Not a good movie, but doesn't leave your head.
Recommended by a friend...I gave it 3 stars only because the film has been in my thoughts for 3 years...it's a "what the heck did I just watch??" type movie. Watch at your own risk, and be prepared to rewind during a few scenes!
Trolljegeren (2010)
"Willow Creek" & "Blair Witch" with Trolls
Slooooowww moving remake of Willow Creek & Blair Witch but with trolls. Maybe it was having to read subtitles, but something was lost in translation. Wanted to like it, but didn't get the appeal of this film.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)
Fun twist and lesson in the danger of stereotypes
Fun movie to watch when you want a "wth just happened rewind that" movie. Lost some momentum towards the end of would give it a 10. Plus bit confused with the connection of the old newspaper at end. But well worth watching.
Ad Astra (2019)
Better than expected
Honestly, I didn't expect much after seeing the viewer ratings online but I had to watch it because...ok... because it's Brad Pitt and Tommy Lee Jones! But I was pleasantly surprised. Yes, the technical and visual expertise behind the film were stunning, but the storyline and dialogue were equally on par. Pitt played his part magnificently and I'm not sure if he pulled some of his mental anguish from his recent personal crises or if he's simply that good at his craft, but it was superb and I got the message loud and clear about what this movie was all about. We are not and will never be alone.
The Way Back (2010)
How did I miss this film??
I guess I was under a rock somewhere in 2010 when the film came out, but I'm so glad I happened to flip through and found this gem for a stay at home movie night with my dad. Had plenty of action, great dialogue that mixed heart-stopping action and heart-breaking emotions with a hearty dash of humanity and a pinch of humor, and maybe a bit of insanity to tell an astonishing, but doable, tale based on true events.
Ed Harris is phenomenal--tough, emotional, selfish, caring--he's great, as usual. But the big surprise was Collin Farrell. At first I didn't expect much from an hot-tempered Aussie trying to play a Russian thug, but I'm tickled to say I was soooo wrong! Farrell did an amazing job of walking the tightrope between a brazen psychopath and a human jaded and kicked by the struggles to survive in a ruthless world.
Honestly, the whole cast deserved an Oscar nod, and the directing and filmography are amazing! Do yourself a favor and check this one out. It's worth every minute.
Forsaken (2015)
Blew my mind, wow!
Had no idea this film would be this good with fantastic acting and real-life chemistry between father Donald and son Kiefer. Very powerful and we should all feel cheated that we didn't see these two acting together more. Storyline was good. I found camera shots and backgrounds were even more beautiful than other reviewers tried to explain. Classic battle between man's conscience, inner peace and necessary violence to ensure that peace. Passed the "can I watch this with my Dad or Mom" test for nudity and frivolous violence. Don't pass this one up if you like Westerns!
In a Valley of Violence (2016)
Ok, it's terrible but hey, it's Ethan Hawk and Travolta!
Honestly watched for that reason alone--it's Hawk and Travolta...as cowboys! What's not to love? Story started out great, and Ethan ended up surprisingly carrying the whole film. But dialogue was terrible--I blame a terribly, terribly written script that wasted Travolta's talent. Dragged in places and my Dad and I literally laughed out loud by the stupid dialogue being spewed by the end. I don't think that's what the filmmakers wanted. Violence was over the top but actors lines were so bad during the violence that made it appear farcical! All the women in this film were flat out wasted. Could have used cardboard cutouts as they were given nothing to do if any value to the film. But if you want a good laugh on par with old fashioned spaghetti Western, it's worth the 2 hours.
Appaloosa (2008)
Good modern Western with few fun twists
Fun film if you need a good Western fix. Excellent acting from excellent actors.
Not a bad plot or dialogue either. All in all an entertaining film that wasn't overly gory and no nudity. Could watch with your parents without cringing.
