House of the Dragon: Regent (2024)
Dubbed B-movie
Enough with the high Valerian garbage. It's like watching a dubbed B-movie. While a few lines here and there are fine, this whole episode is drenched in this awkward, random, made-up language. The actors look like they hardly relate to what they're saying.
And sure there was a bit of action in the last episode, but could the plot actually be any more dreary? And when will Rhaenyra ever do something? Anything really instead of just hiding behind everyone else. This series has so much potential, but 9 out of 10 times the curtain is pulled down right before something interesting happens. Reading extremely positive reviews on here feels Black Mirror-y.
Deep Fear (2023)
Horrific casting
The storyline is fine, everybody loves a shark movie - but you need a few characters you care about for it to work. And this movie actually has that, but the main character... wow, that's just cringey, and it ruins the whole movie. She doesn't come across as particularly resourceful and skilled at sailing or diving, and frankly... isn't that kind of the premise of the film? Ghenea is incredibly beautiful, and I have no doubt she's a stunning model, but this movie is more or less gratuitous shots of her features - and it just becomes cringey. If she can act, the director failed her miserably.
I looked her up, and can see that she had a cameo as Sophia Loren in House of Gucci. Now, that's a part I could actually see her rock, because it goes well with her femme fatale appearance.
Watch The Shallows instead for a female lead shark movie that's actually worth watching. Or even Crawl with the sharks being substituted for alligators instead.
The Curious Case of Natalia Grace (2023)
Reminds me of Child of Rage
Very interesting topic - poor presentation. That's my take on the documentary itself.
As for Natalia, I'm getting Beth. Thomas (the psychopath child) vibes. In case you lived under a rock, Beth Thomas was interviewed as a child about wanting to hurt her baby brother and other people around her. She of course wasn't a psychopath, but a deeply traumatized child who'd gone through unthinkable abuse.
I think Natalia has gone through similar atrocities, and it could easily explain her seemingly inappropriate behaviour with other kids and even adults. It's heartbreaking really. And all of those people at the first place she was abandoned were soooo eager to distance themselves from that miserable child in dire need of help that they failed to care for anyone but themselves. Wow, they come off as despicable human beings. At least the documentary portrays them very accurately as such.
Evil Lives Here: A Special Place in Hell (2022)
Powerful
TheDyingGirl's review is just victim blaming bs. Wow! Talk about being a true life sociopath! Her family better watch out. Talk about lacking on empathy and insight into the psychology of emotional abuse, and the patterns that make it very hard to just get out. She's the type of person who would blame someone for getting killed for venturing out at night.
As for Faith, I cannot even begin to describe the strength it must take to go through an ordeal like this, and then to have someone blame her for her kids' demise. There is only one culprit here, and that's the scumbag 'dad' who not only killed his unborn child and their mother, but then proceeded to kill two more innocent teens as well as his own two daughters all because of his own psychopathy. The mere fact that he would even consider using his own kids as a tool to hurt someone else says it all. And then he whimpers to the police about how he couldn't take it anymore, and how his pathetic hatred was used as an excuse for the despicable person that he really is. I hope everyone around him in prison knows just the kind of lowlife child killer that he is, and makes the rest of his life even worse than that special place in hell that's already waiting for him.
Dexter: New Blood (2021)
Fantastic reboot - almost better than the original!
9 episodes in, and I love it! It's perfection... well, aside from one element. Deb taking over for Harry as Dex' conscience is annoying beyond words. Just go away, Deb.
And Just Like That... (2021)
SATC did not age well...
This is cringe... It's like they somehow went from strong, smart women to imbeciles who no longer know how to navigate the world. I really hope episode 3 will pick up some of the vibe from back in the day.
And it makes me sad to see what Kristin's face looks like. It's ok to look 50+
The only redeeming character in the first two episodes is Sara Ramirez. S/he is perfection.
WandaVision (2021)
Dreadful
Screechy and obnoxious. Not creepy. Not funny. Atrocious garbage.
The Outsider (2020)
Intriguing
Starts off pretty straightforward, but then the plot thickens... and you're hooked. Some of the adaptations of Stephen King's stories end up atrocious messes, but this one has real potential! Sublime acting.
If only HBO would release the entire series at once. I hate waiting for new episodes. ;)
Leaving Neverland (2019)
Everyone suspected it
Having grown up through the 80's and 90's, and watching all the news stories about Michael Jackson's bizarre conduct - I have no doubt whatsoever that the content of this documentary is true. Does that kind of destroy a childhood hero? Yeah, it kind of does, and that's the ONLY reason people are reviewing this documentary negatively.
Obviously, it's heartbreaking to have to come to terms with MJ being a child molester, but it's even more heartbreaking to watch the two victims' intense and utterly believable accounts. One thing is to discount your own natural suspicions, another to ignore the public cases with MJ repeatedly being arrested on charges of child molestation - but ignoring this documentary and still denying that he was in fact a child molester just because he happened to be an amazing artist - is just creepy. As we've seen countless examples of - celebrities are only human too, and they can certainly do wrong.
Mindhunter (2017)
Completely boring
I liked the idea of the show, but it's poorly executed. Two episodes in, and the show just can't hold my interest - it's super boring. Nothing happens. I'd hoped this would be an intelligent serial-killer hunt crime show. It's not. It's not even a psychological thriller type show. It's just... boring.
The actors are portraying shallow characters that you don't really care about and the dialogue is forced and unnatural.
I'd recommend you watch anything else.
Iron Fist (2017)
Yawn fest
I had high hopes for this, but after having watched 5 episodes, I'm still waiting for the action to kick in. Nothing happens! The storyline has so much potential, but the writing is horrendously bad. Is this guy some amazing super hero or what? It still remains to be seen.
The acting is not worth mentioning. All characters seem slightly hollow, and 5 episodes in, it shouldn't feel as if something's still missing. It's like the writers were struggling to fill up the 13 episodes. Fingers crossed that the remaining 8 episodes will actually prove me wrong, but seriously... this is a regular yawn fest so far.
Edit: OK, the whole season is a huge disappointment. Overall boring plot, sloppy writing and by far the lamest contribution to The Defenders.
