Big Hero 6 (2014)
Too similar to other movies
This movie has glowing reviews but I just found it to be... obvious. The story (or the characters) is an obvious ripoff of How to Train Your Dragon, and there's even one scene where it's extremely obviously ripped off. The characters are pretty cliche as well. Everything they tried to do and all the emotional scenes just felt like a product to me. It felt soulless, forced. The animation and background is good. I liked the very final scene. But all in all, it seemed wrong. The creators just copied too many things from other previous films.
The Mummy Returns (2001)
Better than expected
This film does all that a sequel should do, continue the story, introduce new and interesting characters, bring in some new lore, and create new interesting settings and scenarios. It is all well done. The setup reminds me of Lord of the Rings, in a way, as many early 2000s films tried to be epics like it. I expected this film to be dull but it ended up being captivating, and well worth the watch.
The Call (2013)
Great thriller, awful ending
The movie started off strong with a great premise, great characters, and a great story. It was all extremely tense and clever. The character was also extremly sympathetic and well developed. It was actually one of the best thrillers I've ever seen and with such a high concept idea. But the third act- it was awful. I have no idea what the writers were thinking. It went from a perfectly good thriller to a cliche gore fest. The third act completely made no sense, erased all previous characters and their development, and dragged on for way too long. The longer it went on the more I hated the entire story arc. Seriously, it gets more ridiculous and ridiculous by the second- as id it was written by two different people. The final line in the movie is so cringey and awful as well. I would have preferred just "the Hive" setting for the entire film. What a disappointment.
Ready Player One (2018)
Boring, choppy, and not original in any way
I give this film a 6, but only because they tried hard. At least they tried. But in reality, this film was pretty bad. All of the characters either seem like cliches or are just... off. The main character- I don't know, but something feels off about him. That's really the problem with the movie in general- it just feels wrong. Maybe it's just badly paced, but it was just presented in a way that is so boring. No time is given to develop characters at all. The "hunt" itself is pretty boring. Even the final battle seems wrong. Spielberg really tried to make an original film but it just didn't hit the mark. There is no "movie magic" behind this at all. Just watch the trailer instead.
How to Train Your Dragon (2010)
Amazing - A true classic
For animated films, this movie is a masterpiece. It has perfect visuals, an amazing soundtrack, breathtaking scenes, a perfect story, perfect characters, and so much more. There's no doubt that this film is now a longtime classic and will be taught as one of the perfect animated films in universities in the future. Everything just went right with this one. It's so rewatchable, as well. This film is what makes me love movies. And that final fight scene- just epic. Awesome, in the truest sense. My only complaint is that it should have been longer- more time to develop the background and other characters. But overall, a great movie. It will no doubt stand the test of time as an animated movie masterpiece.
Cloud Atlas (2012)
Wish I watched this sooner- one of my favourite movies
This movie was probably the very first thing I've added to my watchlist. I'm not sure why I haven't watched it until now. I've seen the trailer thousands of times and watched behind the scenes videos and so on.. but I've always been scared of actually watching it. Well, for anyone still not sure- WATCH THIS MOVIE. It's an amazing, unique, masterpiece. It is definitely in my top 10, or even top 5. It's long and follows many storylines but never feels choppy. The acting is excellent. The best part is the way the storylines all work and connect together. I love this movie. And I love the ideas it represents. It will require multiple rewatches. There are, of course, some flaws- it's not the best. But really, the only flaw of the movie is that it should have been longer. It's only an eight for now because it feels a little short. Please, watch this movie- you won't regret it.
Black Panther (2018)
So disappointing... worst Marvel movie I have ever seen
I generally like Marvel movies. They've had a low point recently, with Civil War, which I didn't like, but with Homecoming and Thor: Ragnarok, I really felt like they started to improve and balance their humour and good story well.
Based on the trailer for Black Panther, I did not like the movie from the start. The trailer was awful. Then the ratings came out, and I thought that maybe I was wrong. People called it the next Avatar. But I had a bad feeling walking into the theatre after I realized that all the reviews were talking about were the "diversity" of the movie.
And- it turns out I was right. This movie is awful. The story is cliched and forgettable, the characters are standard except that John Watson guy, and it's awfully paced and boring. Nothing stands out. It's been a few months now and nobody is talking about this movie anymore... well, maybe about the black diversity thing, but not the actual movie quality itself. Hmmm. I wonder why. Probably because this movie is **%#%%, and all the critics are scared that they'll be called racist if they don't like it.
I mean, an 88, really? That's just ridiculous. I've always trusted metacritic, but this must be a joke. I want to see all these critics watch this movie again in thirty years and see how much they like it.
Yeah- this is what happens when you involve social politics in movies. Movies are an art, not a platform. And this movie is like a kindergardener's drawing.
Avengers: Infinity War (2018)
Better than expected but still has flaws
Overall, I liked this movie. It was fun, awesome, and a great watch. I was worried that this would be another huge dissapointment for me like Civil War was, where the trailer was better than the movie. I have to say, they handled his movie pretty well. Still, there are huge pacing issues but it's a comic book movie with a lot of characters so i've got to give it a pass. But my biggest problem with the movie is that it doesn't feel like an "Avengers" movie- they're all split up and such. The theme barely plays and when it does it doesn't feel quite right. The Russos don't really understand what the Avengers are, based on this movie. It doesn't feel quite as complete as the previous two. Well, this was a good movie, worth the hype, but I hope they improve for the next and final one. Part 2 is usually better, right?
Supernatural (2005)
Good but needs work
Let me just start off by saying I really like this show. I love the mythology, the characters, the storyline, etc. I'm not trying to say it's bad or anything, but it has many flaws that annoy me. Here are my main problems with the show. 1. Some of the monster of the week episodes. I understand that the show needs to have these kinds of episodes since Sam and Dean are hunters. I liked these filler episodes at first, but now the writers are running out of ideas and just copy the same formula over and over again. Some random guy gets killed. Cue Supernatural logo. Sam and Dean pretend to be FBI agents and ask people questions. They figure out what kind of monster it is. Sam or Dean get captured by the monster. Cue last minute save cliché (see #2). Sam and Dean talk about their issues in the car. The end. It's so repetitive and it feels like I wasted my time watching the episode. 2. The last minute save cliché. I think this happens at least once every episode. It's so annoying now, and it's always the same. Sam or Dean is about to be killed by a demon/monster/whatever and then the other brother saves them just before they are killed. How stupid do you think the viewers are? 3. Characters that keep getting brought back just because they are fan favourites. I understand why Sam and Dean are brought back since they are the main characters. But it's pretty obvious that characters like Castiel and Crowley should have been dead long ago but were brought back so the fans wouldn't have a tantrum. Seriously, how many times has Castiel died? He's just an angel, just like all the other angels, so why does he get special treatment? The writers made up bull multiple times just to bring him back, like in the season 5 finale where they just said "God did it". I like Castiel, but i'm pretty sure it's time for him to die once and for all because this whole thing is becoming a joke. 4. Villains/characters that aren't scary or don't show their full power. There are a few villains like this. The first is Lucifer. Overall, he's a good villain, but not that I think about it, he rarely appears in seasons 4-5. And when he does, he's not very scary. His personality is actually kinda charismatic and he cracks jokes a lot. He's almost like the joker. I never really felt his true power. On the other hand, Death was handled really well and I actually felt scared of him when he appeared on screen. My other example of characters not showing enough of their powers is God himself in season 11. I was so disappointed by the way the writers handled him. Unlike Castiel in season 4, God doesn't appear in an epic way. He just kinda.. comes into the story randomly. I'm fine with his personality, but cmon, it's GOD. We rarely see his powers in action. I'm pretty sure all he does is zap people into a bar. It's so anti-climatic. The freaking leviathans seem stronger than God. 5. Anti-climatic endings. Some season finales are okay, but I really hated season 5 and season 11's finales. Season 4 and 5 make you think there would be some epic showdown between Michael and Lucifer, but it never happens. Lucifer just punches Dean a few times and then Sam takes control (which shouldn't be possible if Lucifer is as strong as everyone says he is by the way) and jumps into the pit. That's it. Season 11 is even worse. Again, the whole season makes you think there will be some epic showdown but the whole episode is just the characters talking. Then God and Amara just make up (again, this makes no sense if Amara is a purely destructive being). I think this is because the show doesn't have a high budget, which brings me to my next point. 6. Lazy special effects. Shouldn't supernatural have a higher budget by now, considering they have 11 seasons? I hate the way they show Heaven, Hell, and Purgatory especially. It's so boring and lame. Heaven looks just like Earth most of the time, but I guess they could get away with that if people just relive their best memories there. Heaven's prison made me laugh when I saw it. It's literally a cell? Are you kidding me? Purgatory is even worse. It's a forest. A freaking forest. That's just pathetic. Overall, the pros still outweigh the cons. The characters are really interesting and it's cool to see bible stories and urban legends brought to life. It's a good show and worth watching.
