Aquaman (2018)
Best DCEU movie after Wonder Woman
AQUAMAN (2018)
DC you finally did it! Another worthy movie from DCEU besides Wonder Woman. Never have I expected the movie to be turned as good as this, especially since the director James Wan is famous for mostly horror movies such as Saw, The Conjuring, and Insidious.
You can also call this movie the Black Panther version of DC : the plot which is battle for the throne, the lost and advanced city of Atlantis which basically is Wakanda, and the powerful villain of King Orm which basically is Killmonger. Surely there are some point which different but those elements are the most that standout to me and basically feels Black Panther enough for me.
There are some things that I must say Aquaman did better than Black Panther : the beautiful tough and badass Princess Mera portrayed by Amber Heard, a badass mother Queen Atlanna portrayed by Nicole Kidman, and a better 2nd villain in the form of Black Manta rather than Ulysses Klaue. Besides that, Jason Momoa is standout as Arthur Curry and Aquaman is a truly energized fast paced action superhero movie since the beginning that will keep you amazed until the end and not realizing that the movie duration is almost 2.5 hours
So why the 4.5 and not the perfect 5 score? Well since basically I am a Marvel fanboy and I watched Black Panther 3 times in theaters, which is a record for me, this movie cannot have a better score than Black Panther LOL. Wakanda Forever
Score : 4.5 of 5 stars
Hidden Figures (2016)
Similar as The Help
Best Ensemble Winner in SAG Awards 2017 is the prove that this movie offers something
IMHO Hidden Figures is the 2016 version of The Help, so if you love The Help, you will end up liking this movie too.. It is the story of 3 brilliant negro women who helps America launches their first rocket orbiting the earth.. diversity and racism issue are the spices that made the movie more and more interesting with some memorable and hilarious quotes such as "Here at NASA we all pee the same color"
Taraji P. Henson lead the cast with a strong performance as Katherine Johnson, unfortunately this year's Best Actress race is so crowded that made her performance looks decent than other actresses.. Octavia Spencer gave her typical performance just like the one that won her an Oscar in The Help, so cheers for another nomination for this movie.. But the real gems for me is Janelle Monae in this movie, if her character could be explore much further, I believe she can do more
Overall, its a really good drama.. Like I said before, if you like The Help then you will end up liking this movie also
Rating : 4 / 5 stars
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Marvel did it better than DC
First of all, I'm glad that Indonesia had the chance to see this movie one week earlier than U.S.A, and after spending 2 and a half hours watching this movie, I can guarantee you that the wait is worth it..
I must gave all the praise to Marvel for doing this movie way much much better than what DC did with Batman and Superman.. Clearly Russo brothers know how to make a movie about our favorite superheroes battle each other.. Even though it is a multi cast movie with a lot of our favorite stars and character just like Avengers, but the character development for everyone is fair and square with the scene-stealer goes all the way to our young Spider-Man with the wonderful performance from Tom Holland.. Russo brothers did it all, with a really simple story they can develop each of our superhero character proportionally that they can shine on their own.. Such as Black Panther which is for me Chadwick Boseman did an amazing job portraying it..
Overall, it is a superb opening to the Marvel Cinematic Universe Phase 3 and definitely can't wait for the Avengers back in action again together in Infinity War
The Lucky One (2012)
Zac Efron can act!
Hey! once again Zac Efron proves himself he can act! Not like his ex- girlfriend who's kinda struggle having career in Hollywood, Zac proves himself with some middle quality but deep drama and now he start in comedy movie too.. Based on Nicholas Sparks novel, of course this will be a perfect movie for the woman audience and I can't see a lot of reason why woman wouldn't like this movie.. But as a general audience, I think the story could have made a little better.. They could have a better script since the cast did a really good job here.. And for chemistry, Zac Efron and Taylor Schilling gave a quite chemistry even wasn't as memorable as Ryan Gosling-Rachel McAdams in 'The Notebook' or Channing Tatum-Amanda Seyfried in 'Dear John' so there's still a room for improvement.. But overall as a movie, 'The Lucky One' delivers a descent watch for general audience but might be one of a chick's favorite movie..
Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)
not as good as the prequel
I'm glad that I'm not the only one who thinks that this second movie didn't as good as the first one.. From the performance, Robert Downey Jr. has did it again with his character as Sherlock Holmes, even Dr. John Watson's performance by Jude Law really got a lot of improvement too.. But their performance didn't help a lot as the story of this movie got the audiences a little confusing even though I know it's quite brilliant to make some twist like that.. The other disappointment is Noomi Rapace's performance which is for me just like a sweetener because of the death of Irene Adler, but she's nowhere for replacing Irene Adler.. Overall, for me this sequel is a little disappointment but I must appreciate Guy Ritchie's work since he did his best in here so this rating is the best that I can give to this movie..
Moneyball (2011)
Brad Pitt is flawless
Never I seen Brad Pitt performance better than Hoffman to be honest, but when you saw 'Moneyball', you'll convinced that the real star and the only star of this movie is Brad Pitt himself. Not only he delivers a strong performance as Billy Beans but since this movie is all about Billy Beane, Pitt's factor really bring it out.. While the element of surprise came from Jonah Hill's performance which is surprisingly good, but to be honest if I can vote whether he should receive an Oscar nomination or not, well I vote for another actor.. But overall, 'Moneyball' is an interesting drama about sports with good performance from the cast
Eiffel I'm in Love (2003)
great number of audiences but not a great movie
It can be called Indonesian 'Titanic' because of the record of audiences it had... Some source said that this movie been watched by 10 million Indonesian people, with most of them are young people... In that situation, it looks like that all of Indonesian people get a plague of this movie... And even I'm watched this movie about 2-3 months after this movie been released... I still amazed with the number of audiences they still have... But the movie itself, it really really light... Just a usual drama comedy of young people with a little set of Paris and a help from Melly and Anto Hoed for the music, overall it just an ordinary movie with a nice soundtrack... Wonder why all young Indonesian people been crazy about this movie so badly that time???
Life of Pi (2012)
totally love the movie
Honestly, I read the book long ago before I watch this movie and when I heard that 'Life of Pi' will be made into a movie my question were : how can a boring book turned into a movie that will drawn the audiences' attention? But after I heard a lot of positive reviews on this movie, I was tempted to watch this movie.. And after I spent almost 2 hours watching this movie, I must gave a big two thumbs up to Ang Lee for making a beautiful visualization of this novel.. Suraj Sharma also make a great and quite impressive performance for his Hollywood debut performance as Pi Patel.. Overall, the Oscars that this movie got shows us how great the quality of this movie had..
Man of Steel (2013)
definitely better than Superman Returns
Compared to what 'Superman Returns' offered in 2006, 'Man of Steel' come back with a stronger power to drawn the audiences attention by having a well-named director and incredible cast with a more interesting story too.. Henry Cavill gave a strong performance as Clark Kent with another lovely performance from Amy Adams as Lois Lane, but the star of this movie is no other than Michael Shannon who successfully as before portraying a ruthless villain in the name of General Zod.. Overall, since I haven't watched the original Superman in 1980's, this version is way better than 'Superman Returns' but just good not that great nor amazing..
Maleficent (2014)
love the twist, love Jolie's performances
A nice character interpretation from Angelina Jolie as 'Maleficent' who unfortunately didn't have the backup from its weak script.. The story is definitely for family, it's a story about love from a pure-heart- turned-to-evil fairy to a princess who she think as her own child.. An interesting character comes from Diaval, with a strong and lovely performance from Elle Fanning as Aurora, while Sharlto Copley failed to shine in this movie with a wrong casting for Philips' character since they didn't cast a handsome boy as a prince but they cast One Direction's personnel (I'm just kidding).. Overall, I like the twist about true love means even though it's very predictable.. But at least they gave a movie that suitable for all ages despite the dark heart that Maleficent have..
Captain Phillips (2013)
Tom Hanks is just awesome
A remarkable performance from Tom Hanks in his middle age since we missed him from his movies from the 90's, too bad the academy didn't appreciate him enough to make the list for Best Actor.. Meanwhile, Barkhad Abdi's performance as Muse got a delightful attention from the critics with 1 BAFTA Awards and an Oscar nomination.. The story itself is quite interesting, but how Paul Greengrass made the movie is another thumbs up since he make not only a great drama but also a thrilling movie that will keep the audiences hold their breath like they been on Phillip's experience.. Overall, 'Captain Phillips' definitely one of the best movies in 2013..
What's Your Number? (2011)
another typical Anna Faris movie
Anna Faris once again proved that she firmly chose herself to be a rom- com actress with this movie.. Her performance just look the same like she always did in her previous movie, so nothing new for her.. While for the main actor, I'm really surprised to see the name of Chris Evans there.. In his busiest year for becoming the hero of America that been featured in two movie title : 'Captain America : The First Avenger' and 'The Avengers', he can still make time to make a rom-com movie which is his specialty because he got famous the first time when he featured in 'Another Teen Movie'.. For the story itself, ordinary and nothing special but still enjoyable to be watched.. Overall, it's a light rom- com that would be a good choice to be watched in your spare time if you already got bored with all Katherine Heigl's or Jennifer Aniston's..
Ted (2012)
hilarious
The most popular stuffed animal doll in 2012! Perhaps that is my new nickname for Ted because of his appearance in this movie, Teddy Bear become more famous and people just wish they had a friend just like Ted.. The story itself is quite unique, the fantasy relationship that turns out to be modern day - buddies friendship between a human and a talking stuffed animal doll.. Seth MacFarlane did a quite impressive job in here, as a voice cast for Ted but also the producer-director- writer of this movie.. And the most wonderful thing about this movie is : Seth takes the audiences from the starting point of John-Ted relationship, and then their highest point when they are already thunder buddies, then lowest point when John leaving Ted for Lori.. And all of that wrapped with a beautiful soundtrack from Norah Jones that really blows the audiences away.. Overall, I really like this movie..
Outbreak (1995)
great cast but standard movie
I really really amazed by how many stars played in this movie, it's great to see that... Dustin Hoffman, Rene Russo, Morgan Freeman, Kevin Spacey, Cuba Gooding Jr., Patrick Dempsey, and Donald Sutherland, all of them in a movie?? I never imagined that... The story itself just usual like the other movies that tells about the end of the world... And the ending itself just standard, a little disappointing I think, because it just looks like this movie just want the main character not dead, they're not telling how the other people that sick can be cured so easily like that... But overall, I should give a thumbs up to Wolfgang Petersen for having so many stars, especially Oscar winners, in this movie...
Becoming Jane (2007)
sweet but not good enough
Actually, it was a sweet movie, really sweet movie... A love story of one of the greatest authoress in English, Jane Austen, that I will never though that it could be so interesting like this... But the weakness in this movie, which is also the supremacy, is the conversation they have along this movie... With an unique British accent and so many difficult words to understand, it pretty annoying me, knowing that my English wasn't very good at all... Anne Hathaway herself did a pretty good job as Jane Austen with her accent, her charm, and also her beauty... But what captured in my mind is she didn't fit enough for the role as Jane Austen... In my opinion, Keira Knightley would be the best cast as Jane Austen in this movie... Especially because they have James McAvoy as the love interest of Jane Austen here... I think the chemistry that Knightley and McAvoy already had in 'Atonement' were be great if they doing it again in this movie... But after all, we should gives a thumbs up to Anne Hathaway... At least she's been trying to put some good performances with her own unique accent here but for me it wasn't good enough...
Silver Linings Playbook (2012)
Jennifer Lawrence is flawless
First time first I must say that I hate you David O'Russell for making a movie that not only full with great performances from its cast with a great story, but also make the drama light enough to be called as romantic-comedy and open up the possibilities of being liked by a lot more people.. The plot is simple, it is a family movie that tells stories about hope, love, and chances but the script just made this movie more and more entertaining to be watched.. Jennifer Lawrence's performance describe it all with her Oscar that she received from this movie, she's really flawless especially with the help of her other movies 'The Hunger Games' that also released in 2012.. Bradley Cooper, I just can't realized he can turned his performance to be an A-class Hollywood actor when the first time I know him I thought he'll trapped in a lot of comedy movie (Silver Linings is a comedy movie too, but different from his other previous movies).. Robert De Niro I guess there's no need to doubt his acting, while Jackie Weaver completed the performance with her 2nd nominated Oscar performance in this movie, two years in a row which just make her one great commodity actress to become the mom in a strong drama movie.. The other performances from the other cast were good too, Chris Tucker, Julia Stiles, John Ortiz, well they just need to be sharpen a little more so they can be turned into a diamond that shines.. Overall, I agree about this movie as one of the best movie in 2012 and I'm totally in love with Jennifer Lawrence's performance in this movie..
Jack the Giant Slayer (2013)
quite entertaining
For a movie that was supposed to entertain its audiences, 'Jack The Giant Slayer' deserved to be rated as a 4 star movie because it offers the fun to the audiences as a rapid and nonstop thrilling movie.. Making a fairy tale and twist it a little into a movie that entertain its audiences, I thought Bryan Singer did a great job in here.. For cast perhaps there's not much well-known actors involved except Ewan McGregor, Stanley Tucci, and the future girl's heart-rob actor Nicholas Hoult.. Their performance just okay and they looks like they're having fun with their adventure in this movie.. For the story itself, I like how Bryan Singer almost wrapped this adventure in an hour and a half and instead of finishing it with an open ending for a sequel possibility, he adds the fun which is the climax of this movie in the last 30 minutes.. Overall, I like how it's made and it is a fun movie to be watched..
Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
better than 2001 version
I'm a little surprised knowing this franchise still got a lot of fans after the disappointing 2001 movie by Tim Burton.. Well, IMHO I also agree with all the other audiences and critics that saying this movie is a good one because I'm enjoying it.. It's much much better than the 2001 version, since I haven't seen the original version, and the cast they had here were also amazing.. The special effects team worked really hard and I thought their job were excellent.. I just not surprised to see the ending because nowadays there's no franchise movie that wouldn't have a sequel possibility, especially if they think this movie could be a huge hit..
Final Destination 5 (2011)
still one of my favorite movie franchise
It's kinda a little shocking knowing this movie is related to the first Final Destination movie, they always had a better idea to make us the audiences surprised huh? The story itself still the same as the previous Final Destination series, a group of people saved from a tragic accident but what happen later are beyond their imagination : death are chasing them one by one.. The only difference is they can live if they kill another people, well it's not a bad idea.. The effects itself still have no difference with the fourth movie : brutal yet so fake, but that's okay with me.. Overall, it's still be an enjoyable movie to be watched, but just don't put any expectation while watching it because these actors still need more acting lesson..
Kung Fu Panda 2 (2011)
as hilarious as the prequel
I'm still found this movie as hilarious as the first one, especially since all the seven main cast still reprising their role to lend their voice in this sequel.. New cast like Gary Oldman, Michelle Yeoh, just made this movie more full of stars.. The story itself still logical, since we never know the past that Po had so exploring them in this sequel is a great idea, since they never end up with ideas when they talked about a sequel.. As I remember, there's more action than the first movie and I'm fine with that... The flow of the story walks rapidly and leave me surprised when this movie ended in less than 90 minutes.. Overall, it's still enjoyable and hilarious as the first movie..
The Tree of Life (2011)
sorry guys, it just not my type of movie
I happened to love drama movies, especially the ones that the critics said it's good enough to compete in the Academy Awards.. So I went to check 'The Tree of Life' as I read a lot review that saying this is a great movie, especially since it won Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival this year.. But it just took me 40 minutes to say I'm enough with this movie because I fell asleep after that.. I keep questioning myself while watching this movie : what kind of movie that Terrence Malick trying to tell us? First it looks like the other drama movie, but when he started to visualize everything, even he has dinosaurs in here, things just get very boring for me.. Not only that I see it's pointless, but it looks like I faced a no direction way and I don't know where to go.. Perhaps his directing style is unique, the cinematography was beautiful IMHO, and if either Brad Pitt, Sean Penn, or Jessica Chastain received a nominee for their performance I wouldn't surprised because I didn't have a full look on their performances but I found them were doing great until half of this movie.. The thing that annoys me more was the editing of this movie.. I don't know if the critics say it was great, but for me it sucks..
