Mother Fish (2009)
Beautiful movie
This is my first review and I had to sign up to review this. Without giving away too much of the story, the story is told from the point of view of two sisters as they flee Vietnam as a flashback. The harrowing journey clearly had a huge impact on Nguyens character and gives viewers a chance to look deeper than just seeing her as the workaholic factory worker. The dialogue and camera work make you feel like you are part of the action and capture the emotion of the story well. While it could have used some extra editing at the end this is only a minor complaint. You can see how it must have made for a good play too. The subject they're tackling is always controversial in Australia so I applaud Do for taking it on as it's clearly close to his heart. He also wrote and directed the 2013 TV series, Better Man. Having grown up with first gen Vietnamese refugees it's nice to see their story told. I just hope more people see it and think beyond what's in the media.
