Level (2021)
Baffling....
.....beyond words. This film contradicts itself at every turn, presents zero factual evidence - and is devoid of any artistic content. A monotenous regurgitation of tired rhetoric, presented in an 'edgy' style (yawn) - not the worst film in the world - but close.
As another reviewer here pointed out - if your guests have overstayed their welcome, play this, they'll soon leave.
Bird Box (2018)
Utter pap.
This actually makes 'Gravity' seem quite good.
Another '100 grand on the effects - a fiver on the dialogue' special.
Avoid.
River (2015)
Superb
Me and the wife are very poor at watching TV (at 60 years old we have NEVER had terrestrial TV and only acquired Netflix a couple of years ago) so I cannot base this review on a lot of comparisons. We enjoy these jolly 'cop' dramas though - and this was the usual 'well - let's have a look and see if it's any good'
What a joy. The script, the acting - wow. Most of the characters were fine - a couple were annoying but - in general - cast was spot on.
Review here say it's slow - mebe that's kinda the society we live in now - lots of consumers want fast paced action and are not capable of giving art a time to develop? I dunno. All I can say is the action is in the dialogue - as well as in the visuals.
The final scenes - heart breaking. Took me a couple of minutes to compose myself at the end - no joke. Even thinking of those last 10 minutes now brings tears to my eyes. Now - as far as I am concerned - that is powerful film making!
Enjoy!
The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)
Pointless drivel.....
...I am a great one for 'beauty is in the eye of the beholder' - but there comes a point when one has to simply declare - sh*t. Since when did Hollywood trade script and acting for special effects (ah - fast and furious - of course!) This is a terrible film - I think it may even be worse than 'Gravity'. I love my sci-fi and - despite being aware of the myriad of negative reviews - was actually looking forward to this. Big mistake. Do NOT bother - if you are remotely interested in plot and dialogue - forget this.
XX (2017)
Worth it for the stop-motion.
I actually really enjoyed the film. I found the production, acting and dialogue to be pretty good. The stories, to be fair, where perhaps a little weak but that's my opinion. If you enjoy supernatural stuff - have a go - I really think this is a cut above some of the other offerings I have watched recently. Then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder....
The star is the stop-motion - worth the price of admission alone - utterly mesmerizing. I would give 10 out of 10 for this alone.
Regards.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015)
Nearly as bad as 'Gravity'........
....but not quite.
It's rare I write reviews but - good grief - is this what the 'film making art' has come to?
For me, at least, this film was just terrible. Yep - the effects were impressive and, err, the.. ummm, errr.... nope - thats it - the effects were impressive.
There are no plot spoilers in this review - there is no plot to spoil. Oh OK - here is THE PLOT SPOILER - its a car chase one way - and then a car chase back again.
They shoulda cast my dog as Mad Max - he woulda been more credible - though of course the film would then have to be called 'Mad Dodger'.
However - lets never forget - one mans meat is another mans potatoes - so you may well love the film - fair enough.
Hmmm ... Mad Dodger - him chasing after a bone and squeaky toy .... barking at the postman - d'ya know - it may just work...
