A History of Violence (2005)
Ed Harris should not be in this film. He is a great actor.
How on earth can anyone rate this film so high? I have just watched one of the most meaningless films I have ever seen. I believe Ed Harris should not be in this film. He is a nice actor. Yet, even he is not enough to save this film. Also, the sex scenes were terrible. The script, the performances, the characters.. All were unsatisfactory and shallow. The boy is bullied by another boy. So what? How are we supposed to relate this to the story? I did not see any harsh violence. So the name of the film does not relate to the story. I mean come on. Just admit that it was a waste of time. I was an overrated film. My vote is 3!!
Six Feet Under (2001)
Unique show that brought death out of closet
I just finished watching the entire series and I can truly say that "Everybody's Waiting" was the best episode of any shows ever! The show depicted infinite number of ways to die in a very honest, true, touching and provocative way and I have witnessed silent, violent and sometimes timely deaths throughout the show. Yet, the last six-minutes depicting the deaths of all major characters through Claire's vision was definitely unique in TV history. I think SFU is one of the best shows I have ever seen despite its overly sexually explicit content. I think I will need to watch it a couple of times to appreciate the nuances I may have missed watching for the first time. I learnt that there was no time limit for grief and that "time is the best remedy" is nonsense. In each episode, the major character was darkness. I had a strong sense of identification towards the Fishers who were in the midst of a trauma.
Mission: Impossible III (2006)
MI:3 seized my imagination
First of all, i must say that i do not enjoy action movies. But yesterday i had the opportunity to get a free ticket given by DHL.(In one scene DHL bus is seen in the movie but it was not a good advertisement) The film grabs you from the very beginning until the end of the film. There is surprisingly no scene that is unnecessary or boring. If you live action movies and especially a classic like Mission Impossible, you have got to see it. It was a breathtaking adventure that Tom Cruise had. I really liked him for the first time. Last but not least, Philip Seymour Hoffman is a good actor. He has the ability to play any type of character. All in all, it is a successful film.
Ikiru (1952)
life, death and bureaucracy
Ikiru is a film about life and death. It told through our hero Kanji Watanabe who is a symbol of people who work in a jaded office. I believe everyone who is not happy with his job will identify himself with Watanabe. Ikiru shows us no matter how boring our job or how meaningless and loveless our lives are, we should live a good life and make good changes in our lives long before we consider the day we die. I do not believe Watanabe is particularly boring or a "mummy" since his friends and his children do not seem to love him. That is why he is feeling outcast and he can not identify himself with his environment.Ikiru also tells us about the dis-functionality of bureaucracy. After Watanabe learns that he has six months, he not only tries to change his thirty-year life, but also the mechanism of the things at the office. This makes Watanabe a hero.
Scarface (1983)
a very successful movie
I am not loving this film because i am a huge Al Pacino fan. Scarface is a film that has the power to make Al Pacino the best actor ever. The accent, music, message are clear and given in an effective way. I can not understand those critics who found Al Pacino's acting in Scarface bad. The posters of the movie are still on the walls. The quotes saying "make the way for the bad guy" or "say hello to my little friend" are all classic. The relationship between Tony and his sister is depicted in a very sensible way. This is one of my all time favorites. American dream could not be depicted better. The rise and fall of Tony Montana is a lesson.
Brokeback Mountain (2005)
Sensitive and Inhibited LOVE between two men
BBM is truly a sensitive movie. It makes sense with the general look on Ang Lee's face. i firstly could not figure out why Jack suddenly got intimate with Ennis by putting his arm around his body in the tent.Because until then the conversation between them did not seem to be that much warm. However, as the story unfolds itself, it made me believe that there is a very passionate love between them and especially at the union and the shirt scene were quite touching. It was a very sad ending and made me CRY! and think of how love can be that much strong just like the one in "Angels in America"
Finally, i must say that this film will not be forgotten not because it freely tells about two men's secret relationship in a world where most of the people say that is wrong, but because it reveals love in a much sensitive way than the other films where the love is between a man and a woman. congratulations to Ang Lee.
Babam ve Oglum (2005)
above average
indubitably, cagan irmak is one of the best directors in Turkey. It is quite clear that he is a talented person whose films are discernible from the other junk films. His TV-series called cemberimde gul oya was his masterpiece. Even though i am not a cry-baby, every Friday when it is aired, i cried so much that i usually have headache after each episode. His first short-cut film was also quite remarkable called bana old and wise i cal. When all of these considered, i went to babam ve oglum with high expectations yet i could not find something just above the average. The performances were perfect but the movie itself exploits feelings. If you want to cry do not miss it because it is nearly one hundred percent possibility that you will.
Angels in America (2003)
just perfect
First of all, I want to thank to the channel for broadcasting Angels in America. Despite the themes, scenes, and critical allusions in Angels in America that may disturb many people the channel broad casted. After i watched its DVD i realized that there were not major cuts made by the TV channel. Second of all, i must admit that before seeing the film i said to myself that i will only see it because great Al Pacino was in it. However, i realized that while watching i even forgot that he was in this masterpiece because the performances of others were almost as stunning as that of Al Pacino. Besides, I do believe that by accepting such a role Al Pacino proved not only he is the best actor ever but also he is the ability to play any kind of role that anyone can write. Last but not least, Angels in America has a deep hole in my heart so much that i sometimes find myself thinking about going home, turning the lights off and just watch it praying that it will never end.
Eskiya (1996)
return of Turkish cinema
Eskiya is perhaps the best Turkish film that has authenticity. Everyone who wants to learn about Turkish films should see it. It has been regarded as the return of Turkish cinema after all the bad amateur porno movies shot in the 70's. People trembled after seeing it. The performances of Sener Sen and Ugur Yucel who were the main characters in the film were worth seeing. What is left after the movie was their unforgettable quotes about life. I did not meet with a Turkish person who watched the film and did not cry. After Eskiya most of the film directors who were jaded owing to the situation in Turkish film industry get excited and convert their investments in this sector. But, unfortunately, we could not see a film that has trembled Turkey more than Eskiya did.
Çemberimde Gül Oya (2004)
Çemberimde gül oya is a masterpiece.
Çemberimde gül oya is a masterpiece. People who want to learn what happened in Turkey in 70's should watch it. Personally, I believe that most of the last episodes or last parts of the movies or films end in a bad way. But in this film, final episode was perfect because you understand that every character and every event is connected to each other and everybody is found by the main character. This makes you surprised. Besides, Çemberimde gül oya manages a person to cry and laugh simultaneously!!! Although its ratings were not that high, this film created its own fans. I want to say thanks to Çagan Irmak for directing such a film.
