Treasure of Monte Cristo (1949)
It's All Here!
Treasure of Monte Christo has it all: poor writing, worse acting and atrocious direction. I think of the sorry people who actually bought a ticket then sat in agony while they waited for the feature.
Poirot: The Labours of Hercules (2013)
Agatha Christie / ITV at Their Best
The dialogue is a feast.
Direction lilting, intense.
Acting sublime.
I've watch watch this episode several times and always enjoy it's grandeur, it's intimate treasure.
Monk: Mr. Monk and the Three Julies (2008)
Horrible.
Horrible.
Usually Monk stories have more to do with reality then simply putting the actors in recognizable costumes, giving them a recognizable language. Monk writers usually create their own scenes and characters without lamely ripping them off from Hitchcock.
This episode is so haphazardly written -with nothing remotely possible- that I could not suspend my belief.
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005)
It Disapoints
Can't they keep the characters the same from one film to another? A gruff Dumbledore, joking McGonagall, and the Three Kids have been washed down to be just silly. Maybe it's the English Humor coming from the new director. This film is too far a field from the others for me. I know... Take it on it's own merits. But there must be some kind of through line between them all, don't you think? Each film can't be shifted so drastically from one set of characters and Hogwarts settings to another! This movie is almost like it was made in a parallel universe/sound stage! Maybe I'm missing something. And don't EVEN get me started on the music!
