Downsizing (2017)
Such a great premise yet lacked the substance it needed
The idea behind this film is very unique and, had it continued from the point where Paul moves into his mansion, in the direction I thought it would go in, it would get more than 7.
Sadly, it took a completely different path, and didn't have enough of what I think the viewer wanted. It needed to depict more of what life being that small would feel like in a big world. Instead we were carried on Paul's journey with him in Leisure Land as a small person all the way through so you never really felt the true perspective of how small he actually was.
There were a lot of inconsistencies...the boat scene in Norway. It felt like normal size. The mountains would have been HUGE. And the fog so much higher. Where were the birds, bugs and flies?
Why was this amazing scene ruined? It should have been immense.
I just wish we could see the film again from the point Paul moves in, and more was made of his conversion to his new wondrous life of being a tiny human. Such a pity as I loved the first 40 minutes.
Cheat (2019)
Could have been good, but.....
There were so many ridiculous plot holes. Like why would a lecturer at Cambridge University try and confront a student over a cheating incident, without following a strict process? As if Adam would be stupid enough to not trust his wife, but believe everything a 20 year old girl would say. And after receiving the photo on the phone she was incredibly calm. It just didn't ring true, none of it. I wish they'd written it properly and made it more convincing. It's a real shame. Superb cast.
Collateral Beauty (2016)
Am so so so happy I saw this movie despite the bad press
Just don't understand what there wasn't to like. For me if you like Will Smith, or you've seen Seven Pounds and thought it was a great surprising story, full of emotion and intrigue, then see this movie.
Kate Winslet, Ed Norton, Keira Knightley, Helen Mirren and Will Smith. A slowly evolving tale of life, and what happens to people every day. And the different ways we react. It was so well thought out, and delivered itself almost poetically.
Wonderful, beautiful and clever.
Ray Donovan (2013)
Just can't get enough of this programme
Very seldom do I write a review. Even less often do I find myself watching a TV show and then feeling unable to tear myself away before I watch the next one.
What stands this show apart from others, is the way the writers stick to the story. The characters evolve, always in a way you cannot predict, but yet realise afterwards, it couldn't have gone any other way. No one is particularly likable, and when you first start watching it, you feel slightly angry with yourself for committing to it. You may even question what you like about it, when everything that happens in it is so dark, gritty and grim.
But the acting is phenomenal, and each character develops in a way that is almost genius. Each character has their own pull. Sometimes when you watch a show there are certain scenes that you can't be bothered with because you don't care about that particular character as much as others. In Ray Donovan ALL of the characters are compelling and unique. Even the vulgar and hateful Mickey is just too awful for words BUT absolutely brilliant in every way.
Bridget, and Abby are both fantastic in their roles. And now in season 3 the newly introduced Finneys are amazing creations, taking the show down a whole new journey.
This is a highly underrated programme, and one of my favourite all time things I've ever watched. Almost want to stop watching it, so I can savour my last few episodes before I begin season 4.
