Epidemic (1987)
A funny style exercise
The idea of the film is great. Mixing the creation of a movie and his viewing. It's done in a very ambitious way, incredibly sophisticated and elegant when we know the budget who was assigned to the movie.
A lot of scenes are incredible, specially the one who shows the contamination of the priest, adding a reflection on the condition of the black man. Obviously the last scene is one of the most incredible things I've seen on a screen, but we can doubt the mental health of Von Trier and his crew. However maybe it's the reason he's so good...
I didn't like a few things. I think there is too much time about the creation of the movie, a few ridiculous and unappropriated moments as the story of the American letters of Niels
Manderlay (2005)
When Manderlay shows his teeth
After seeing some bad reviews about it, being surprised by the way Cannes ignored it, I went to the theater with a little bit fear to see the new Von Trier. 2 hours and a few minutes later, I could see that this incredible director still gives us an incredible source of thoughts and views in his movies, with a highly sophisticated realization matching perfectly the story.
The speech is eloquent, giving a different way to think. With this film, the consensus doesn't matter, it goes straight to the point, but whereas Dogville was a little bit demagogic, this one gives us a lot of different indication, Grace is less one-sided, she fools himself in the trap of slavery, she's less unreachable, being overwhelmed by her sexual desire, and the film become more exciting and complex. Moreover, there are more events and motion and the film is less boring than Dogville was at the first view.
To finish i'll say that Manderlay isn't only a brilliant sequel to Dogville, but an evolution in narration with a completely different topic

The most weird thing
I've seen this film some weeks ago. When i came out of the room, I was disturbed. The first hour is pleasant, showing us a funny conversation between three persons who are tying to create something interesting about their being. Then, the long trip in the strange land where degenerated old ladies live is mind shocking, repetitive and hard to see. But the effect is clear. When you felt the isolation, the promiscuity watching Dogville, Chetyre gives you the same medication with a ten times harder concentration. A few weeks after seeing it, you keep a clear and screeching memory. This film is an experience, it brings something different, some points of view are bothering, but a strange feeling added to gorgeous landscape remain in your head after seeing it.
The Saddest Music in the World (2003)
Still in it
I've just seen the movie at the "festival international du film de la Rochelle" in France, and I must say that this was a marvelous moment, this was the most surprising and exciting film I've seen during all the festival, though I had seen wonderful films as Blood and bones, Free Zone or My summer of love. I ain't gonna talk about the perfect work with the image, the shining white and black, or the technical performance. What is excellent is that all serves the unbelievable atmosphere of a dark and ironic fairy tale about alcoholism and human sadness. You enter into this strange world, there could be a strong and serious topic, but you only laugh but also feel more concerned, because as it's said in the film, sadness is often a fake so you understand better the feelings of the characters by laughing at their sadness. As the noisy ring that cut off the musicians performance, your laugh prevent you from being solemn, to join this soon mythic beer party. And you're still boozed after this film....
