Breaking Infinity (2023)
A smart low budget sci fi film that makes the most of what it has
This is one of those smartly written, low budget sci fi films that tackles a big concept on a small budget. The mystery and relationship are interesting and compelling. I was surprised by the twists, but I never felt lost. The acting, writing and direction are all very good. I don't post very often and only when I really like (or dislike) something, and so I was genuinely surprised by the negativity in some of the posts. Maybe it comes down to expectations. This is not an action film. It's a quiet, thoughtful sci fi story with a good little mystery and a nice human relationship at its heart. I enjoyed it.
Fallout (2024)
Good story telling and characters that grow
I've never played the Fallout games, but I've really enjoyed the show so far. One of the big reasons for this is the characters. They are well written, with flaws and motivations that make sense for who they are and they fit into the world they inhabit. Lucy (the main character) is an excellent example of a great "hero with a heart who has a lot of flaws to overcome on her journey" and I am grateful the writers are actually letting a female character make mistakes and grow. It's a refreshing change from the boring characters being churned out by the big studios (especially Disney's Star Wars).
Paper Girls (2022)
Poor direction ruins an interesting premise
The bones of a good series are here, but the disjointed direction of the pilot never builds any connections between the characters and the slow pacing of the talking scenes devolves quickly into a slog fest of exposition. What little mystery or suspense exists is quickly ruined by the uninspired shot choices. I doubt many viewers will make it to episode two.
Poor sound quality, lighting and music only serve to step the project down to the level of mediocre student film, and maybe even a bit lower as there are a lot of mediocre student films that show greater potential and craft.
Brian Vaughn's work is much better represented in the Marvel show Runaways, which I recommend viewers check out over this confusing, poorly directed mess.
Fauda (2015)
A unique look into a complicated world
Leave your politics at the door and just watch the show. Fauda is an interesting human drama that glamorizes neither side, shows the faults and humanity of both Israelis and Palestinians and takes characters from both sides down dark paths of violence and revenge.
I do recommend watching it in Hebrew/Arabic with subtitles. The voice acting in the dub took me out of the show.
This show is not about finding a path forward or looking back and playing the blame game of history. It's a story about people struggling in the here and now in a chaotic mess where the lines between "us and them" is blurred.
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
Good fun, great movie
Kingsman: The Secret Service is a great popcorn movie with some stellar action, fun characters and a sense of humor that is just plain entertaining. There were a few minor bits that went a bit over the top, but they were few and far between. I'm looking forward to getting out and seeing the sequel and hope it's the start of a franchise that manages to avoid getting tired. I highly recommend Kingsman.
