Awoken (2019)
Most reviews are fake, I've seen much worse but it's not good
Production is higher/better than a lot of cheap horror movies, but so much was lame. Acting wasn't terrible but the script isn't great, and the plot was poorly executed - the idea had great potential but it flaked out. Giving it a one or two really isn't fair. I have seen so, so much worse. But a 9 or 10 is fake.
I was torn between giving it a 3 or a 4. Initially rated it 3, but just watched a movie so much worse that I decided it's worth a 4 just for production values and acting had some merit. I finished it, that's something. But a 6 is extremely generous or maybe they're just stupid, and anybody says 8, 9, or 10 is a liar, or maybe really, really stupid and has never watched movies.
My biggest problem was with stupid, unreasonable behavior by allegedly intelligent medical interns.
There are 3 patients with sleep disorders in a secret/forgotten basement of a medical university being illegally treated by a doctor with unapproved drugs. They are all in the same room, with an observation window. Only one is a woman and she has 'night terrors'. She is obviously afraid of the new patient, the brother of the female lead CJ a medical intern. He has fatal familial insomnia and their mom had it. He acts like he's possessed, sitting on the edge of the bed hunched over with the bones in his back pushing out, his eyes changed color - more than once - I guess nobody standing all around him noticed, he's murmuring in an evil voice with an evil smile - all of which his sister shrugs off, looking confused, oh well.
The female patient grabs CJ, crying hysterically, she is terrified and says she's scared and she wants to leave -but CJ basically shoves her back down on the bed and says 'you'll be fine once you get your meds' then leaves the room and LOCKS the door. So I guess that means the patients are at the mercy of whack a doo doctor & company, can't just walk out if they want to. If it had been me I would have walked out the room as soon as the door opened, and punched anybody who tried to stop me - this lady just whimpered and did nothing.
The lady patient then climbs onto the back of a chair and puts a chain with a kind of noose around her neck, smiles and says in a demon voice "this is for you CJ" while CJ stands in the now open door and says NO! but otherwise has stopped in the doorway and never rushes to try and stop her from hanging herself, instead watches her step off the chair, shirks back and bursts into tears and then does absolutely nothing to stop her from strangling to death. Self hanging doesn't cause instant death. She doesn't even call for help, I'm not even sure she tells anyone immediately. Her crazy brother is sitting there like a grinning moron and there is another male patient in a bed in the room with headphones on who looks young and strong- he could have helped hold the woman up to avoid strangulation, but he has his back turned and CJ doesn't ask for help. Headphone guy (another review called him sleepy John Wick - I recognized who he meant as soon as I saw him) never says a word throughout the movie, but is usually awake and watching, but never does anything but stare with an unhappy expression.
Even later when they 'try' to leave to take the body out, the doctor and all 3 interns are prepared to go in the elevator with the stretcher, but they left Sleepy John Wick and possessed brother back in the room with chain nooses hanging off the ceiling.
Nobody tells anybody anything important, CJ sees an old VHS tape of her mother possessed and tearing pages out of a bible, when her brother does the exact same thing in exactly the same way - she doesn't act like there's any connection. Even after she sees him muttering weird things and appears to make the lady with night terrors have a terrible dream & she jumps awake and starts crying and looking at him in fear - then begs to leave, CJ shrugs it off and never even told anybody she wanted to leave. Who does that? Even after he grabs Cj by the throat and says LL KILL YOU in a demon voice, she takes no action. Seeing him muttering incantations in an ancient language, probably latin in a demonic voice, she can't put 2 and 2 together. Even though it was obvious he's dangerous, she leaves another patient alone in the room with him. I mean really pretty much everything is her fault for being so stubbornly stupid, irresponsible and selfish.
Also I have to wonder why a room with 3 sleep deprived patients who may show erratic behavior has 3 chain nooses hanging off the ceiling. I can't think of any reason hanging chains looped around to create a slide noose like a dog's choke chain would be hanging off the ceiling.
The elevator won't work, the staircase has collapsed, there is no phone out, cell phones don't work, and nobody knows that place exists - how did she get out?
NOT A TEN, not a 5, no more than a 4 - but at least a 3, I mean hey it's no 'Ouija Shark' 1 star.
Hexing (2017)
Not Artistic or Visionary, 10 star reviews are fakes
It's not a one star, but I could not in good conscious give it four. It's a pretty solid Three (3) but I can see why a lot of people would give it only 1 ot 2, just terrible. Also the opening still shot of Notre Dam everyone raves about looks like the 'Toy' or miniature filter on my cheap camera. A 10 year old could have taken that shot, and probably did. Direction and editing is pathetic, almost nothing makes sense.
Awful cinematography, worse script, and awful bad acting, I mean really bad. Expressionless monotone, unreasonable & unrealistic reactions OR ridiculous overly theatrical facial expressions and exaggerated body language - maybe those actors are used to the exaggeration required for a stage performance but comes off hokey and bad on screen, and really most were just wooden and stiff.
One woman treats this man like garbage, but when he's dead in jail she RUNS out the building crying and arms pinwheeling (I mean flailing arms spinning like pinwheels - like Chevy Chase pretending to fall, okay?) shouting "jake's dead, jake's dead" - the most 'emotion' evinced and looked like a clown.
In another scene 'bad boss' is screaming at the top of his lungs, shrieking in broad daylight lunchtime in a restaurant filled with people sitting at tables and no one even turns their head . Then before anything weird happens the girl screams his name twice, I thought the chandelier was about to fall on his head, but I guess she was trying to warn him about something that doesn't make sense. Then he starts bashing his head on the countertop laughing maniacally while ihs employees say 'no,don't do it' without much conviction and there are no background screams, I mean if that happened while I was at lunch I would scream or say OMG somebody stop him, something. It's like nobody knew it was happening - then blood splatter flies all over this girl's face and she winces but her expression doesn't change and she's not horrified, doesn't scream or cry, just nothing.
The story description should not have divulged what is essentially a "late in the movie" reveal - that I didn't even fully understand when it was revealed, gI only understood it go cursed, not that his stupid needy ghost was attached..
It's all over the map, almost nothing understandable without a character explaining fully every key aspect of the movie. For example: "Oh the day just got worse,he's the resident dirty copy" - man acts like a cartoon character of a dirty cop in a bad movie, grab's one girl's ass and then, when she slaps him (but doesn't rebuke him, just stands there like a mannequin, staring at him) he gets up and hisses something in her ear wiggling his tongue 'ominously' and like he's licking the edge of her ear but she has zero expression on her face.
Bad Boss is also a one dimensional cartoon character.
There is no character development and you pretty much hate everybody, they all have no personality and no emotion other than screaming boss and sleazebag cop who's a pervert and you never even find out what does he have to do with anything?? NOTHING: They just say 'he's a dirty cop, he acts sleazy and arrogant, then he stabs himself in the throat with a bottle. Why does he even go to that restaurant? It's not bar or a club, makes almost no money, it's only open from about 10 to 5. It's not even a restaurant it's a bakery that sells like tea and cakes or something, with 'chocolate sauce' and 'fresh cream'. Dirty cops go to bars, clubs & strip joints - where the action is. Not a 'couples' and old lady tea & cake bakery.
Oh and there were a few special effects, which were terrible, high school beginner amateur quality and could have been done with an online editing software. '
Editing: A Man standing in waist deep water falls backwards and underwater shot it must be 20 feet deep - he's sinking and looks dead in the water, there's no bottom to stand on. When he pops back up (in reverse rewind of the fall) it's barely up to his chest, then he's hugging his daughter and they're almost on the shore with surf rushing in below their knees.
