The Mandalorian (2019)
Engaging, visually stunning and full of mystery.
I don't wanna be 'that guy', but I never write reviews. I've had an account on here years and I must have written about 5 reviews, this will be one of those times.
I've never considered myself a massive Star Wars fan but I became more engaged from episode 6 onwards, the films were great - but this first episode was incredible. It drew my in from the start and I supposed it helped that I didn't really know about the Mandalorian, so the mystery was more intense. If I say anything else I'll probably have to add the spoiler warning into it. Can't wait for episode 2!
Emergence (2019)
It's okay, I get it, finally!
I've just watched the two available episode of Emergence and I've got to say- those other negative talk a load of crap!- In my opinion anyway. The story was tight, yet I don't feel I missed anything. The main protagonist had a real connection with (let say..maybe, probably) the secondary protagonist (the little girl) and I feel like I know where that relationship is going but I would like to see it get there myself.
Justice League (2017)
Critics schmitics. Easily my favorite film of the past few years.
I guess you have to just love DC heroes to love this film entirely. The only way I could fault it is that is wasn't long enough! I could've sat through hours and hours of that! I laughed a lot, it was emotional. It was unexpected. Even the way Superman arrived due to some scenes in the trailer being different than in the actual movie which turns out being a lot more pleasant than annoying. Amazing movie. I wasn't convinced of Ezra Miller being the Flash, but he's so different from Grant Gustin's Flash, not better or worse, just different. Funnier, actually. But here he's not the team leader so he can take the role of the joker type in the movie.
10/10!!! Not f**k the haters, I just really feel sorry for those who choose to pick apart a film for faults rather than to enjoy the mastery on screen, but whatever your loss :)
Beyond (2016)
The crappy reviews? Are from people without an attention span.
I literally have no idea what the bad reviews are talking about. If you'd actually bothered to watch past the first 30 mins of the first episode, you'd love this if you loved things about superpowers. The production quality is actually awesome, even it's only 10 eps a season. Awesome show, can't wait for the second season.
Inhumans: Behold... The Inhumans (2017)
It's better than the score, but..
If they are trying to make Maximus out to be the bad guy, they're not doing a very good job. He's been pretty justified in all the actions he's taken, plus he's not been killing everyone willy-nilly. There's been no definable bad guy except for that girl that's loyal to maximus. I suppose we will see the bad guy in him when he gets to earth. All that hate about humans because he is one, we will see him kill them without much thought.
Arrow (2012)
Arrow is awesome, the only bad thing is Laurel's character.
I love this show, always have, always a will, it's what first got me into watching live action comic book to shows and films. Everyone's character is awesome, and as long as Oliver and Felicity aren't going through any drama, him having a happy, healthy relationship is a fresh touch too. What I can't stand is Laurel's character, I hope Katie Cassidy is nowhere near a self-indulged/obsessed moron in real life cause it just means she's a tremendous actress. Someone could be going through the final stages of their death and Laurel would be there to say "but how do you think this makes ME feel?". You can literally predict when she's gonna be self-obsessed because she makes almost all topics about her. I want you to play a game for me, well two games. 1. Drink every time she manages to swing a subject so she becomes sub-topic, and 2. Take a lick of your rum and raisin ice-cream every time she says "me" or "I" and I promise you, you'll be wasted after 10 minutes. I only mentioned rum and raisin ice cream because of the low alcohol content, so the statement should be supported by its own legs. Anyway, Arrow is amazing, and I don't mean to sound harsh, or callous, but I'm glad the character Laurel is dead because I hate the sincerely self-obsessed/indulged/righteous, the ones who truly get upset and screechy because the person in hand wasn't thinking about them for once. I realise this was more of a rant than a review, but I've speed watched seasons 3&4, and it just got to me.
Me Before You (2016)
Not my type of film, but moved mountains in me.
I don't usually go for this type of film, I'm a superhero film type of guy. But because the beautiful Emilia Clarke starred in it, I forced it onto my screen and boy I'm glad I did! Some people say bad things about Emilia Clarke and her acting, but yet again, unsurprisingly she was perfect. Through my heightened sense of empathy, I could imagine how a paralysed man would feel, and Sam Clafin performed the role to perfection. For a soppy romance movie, this was great. 8/10, it's missing two for the silly reason that it is a romance film, I rated The Flash a 10, so rating this 10 would go against my core values. In conclusion, even is this movie is not something you'd usually watch because of its genre, I'd give it a chance anyway, because...Emilia Clarke, even in her dorky dresses was absolutely sublime, and it's worth watching just because of her, well, it was my reason anyway.
Forever (2014)
The single only bad thing about this show is that it was discontinued after one season.
The premise for this show is excellent, you'd think by just reading the base plot line that it wouldn't be all that exciting, but Ian Gruffudd plays a hyper intelligent, super weird but extremely likable protagonist very well. I don't think the show would have been half as good had anyone else played the character. His chemistry with co-star Alana De La Garza is great considering each character is at either end of the spectrum in every possible way. Like most shows, it's a 'solve-a-kill a week' kinda thing with one long bad guy arc that spreads throughout the season. I like when the protagonist has a big secret to whom he finally reveals all to the co-protagonist after a long time and various hints dropped already, but they pretty much kept wraps on it all the way til the very last episode, which is why I felt the show's cancellation so much. I like it when, after finding out the secret, they explore his powers together to solve crimes, but that never happens, so now you have an awesome show, with an amazing premise, but stupidly enough, no network wants to pick up, which is just a big waste. 9/10 only because of the cancellation.
John Carter (2012)
Amazing film!! SPOILERS ARE UNDETAILED AND VAGUE.
I don't often favor Disney movies for the obvious reasons a 27yr old male doesn't favor a Disney movie. John Carter was on my IMDb watchlist for about 2 months before I finally decided to watch it, and I'm just bummed I didn't get to watching it sooner - however, the synopsis doesn't really do the film justice at all. And that's the reason I think it did so badly in the box office, here, let me have a go of it:
John Carter is an ex-cavalrymen for the Confederate Army who accidentally sends himself to Mars through a portal. Different conditions, low gravity and his bone density, enables him to do amazing things that even surprise the Martians, like being able to jump to incredible heights or distances, and have a form of super-strength. After a lot convincing, the love of a beautiful Martian princess and a temporary dire situation, he uses his new abilities to lead an underdog army of green Martians to defeat the evil warlord (and his human looking army of Martians) and save the princess from a marriage to said warlord.
Now, I would have watched this months ago, had it been described like that. Yes, it's very "Disney-like", saving the princess n'all but it wasn't the narrative that had my eyes glued to the screen, it was the story itself, the effects, camera work and the incredible job all the actors did. The single only reason I didn't vote this movie a 10 was because even at 2hrs 12mins long, it could have been longer. I wanted it to be longer, there were no plot holes, there was a beginning, middle and end, every character's story, no matter how deeply or vaguely, was covered, but like I said, I enjoyed the film immensely, so... It should have been longer!
This movie is exactly how I like my films, original, light overtones, optimistic, lots of fighting and clean kills, protagonist always being the man of the hour, even when enslaved. It has an air of optimism about it, which is exactly what I'm all about, an expected yet happy ending, and plot surprises from start to finish, a love story, but not so much that the love becomes the anchor, the main focus and the reason for the continuation of the adventure.
So in conclusion, if you like Space, aliens, (what would be) a handsome dude, a hot Martian chick (looks human but with markings on her body), super-human abilities, an immortal villain, an original story, or that heart swelling feel of unity (two 1000yr old warring species of Martians coming together to fight the antagonist army, cementing all future truces and treaties) then this movie is for you.
I'm unsure as to whether this review was good enough to get people to watch, but you won't be disappointed.
Beauty and the Beast (2012)
Quite frustrating to watch (MAY contain spoilers)
This review doesn't exactly contain spoilers, so much as vaguely written observations, I only ticked the spoilers box to cover my own a**! I really liked this show, I still do in fact. (Only got to episode 17 of season 1). At the start, it wasn't exactly a new premise for a TV show, in fact there are a lot more TV shows based on a much more solid premise than to redefine an age old classic, but it is well made, the story lines are pretty decent, and it may seem like the same as every other cop catching killers TV show out there, you know, scene sees killer kill victim, cops show up the next day, yellow tape, coffee in hand, throwing jokes about as they all do, to show that this is yet just another day as an officer of the law. They start the investigation, 25mins in, they catch someone who they are convinced is the real killer, new evidence comes to light, and they find out the real killer was staring them in the face all along. Yes, it is almost exactly like that, and I don't know why I keep watching when I get to the point where I can pretty much point at the killer 5mins in. But weirdly I keep on watching, in fact the only reason I didn't mark BATB a 10, was because it is also very frustrating to watch. You find yourself shouting at the TV screen, 'obviously you're gonna get caught!', 'you're standing there talking about love, when in 2 minutes, task force X is gonna bust through the door to catch you, but you're standing there gazing lovingly into each other's eyes like morons!', there is a lot more I shout at, because it is choc full of moments where you are almost certain these characters either don't have fully functioning brains, no sense of urgency or secrecy, or too busy 'living in the moment', to apply any sort of common sense whatsoever to the situation. All in all, I would urge you to watch the show, it is frustrating, yes, but it is a high budget, well made show that will leave you on the edge of your seat sometimes, while at other moments, you'd have seen certain situations coming a mile off. Either way, whatever this show is doing, it keeps making me click on episode after episode. You can either find out what has got me so curious, or you can go ahead watch another show, your choice.
Horrible Bosses 2 (2014)
Incredibly annoying
I enjoyed the first movie, it was fresh, it was funny! But then they made a second, with a poor storyline, and a so annoying Charlie Day, it literally made me want to rip my face off. His voice was so squeaky, and forever on-going, I finished that film with a god awful headache. I know the three of them are meant to make bad decisions constantly because it's part of the humor of the show, but for me, all it was, was extremely exhausting, and it was mainly to do with Charlie Cox being the squeaky, childish idiot, who can't keep his mouth shut. Seriously, if you want a headache after watching a movie, watch this, but if not, steer way clear because this movie stinks.
