So many plot holes
The film is shot and edited very well, but the script is just a mess. I guess it was entertaining in parts, but overall it left me saying wha???
It's easy to write a movie that has so many plot holes that 'anything goes'. I'm not going to bother listing the myriad of issues with the plot, but suffice it to say I cannot wait for the "Everything Wrong With... " YouTube videos. At least "Get Out" was sorta plausible, simple and followed some basic rules of the real world. Not this one.
Annihilation (2018)
Random drivel
Nothing made sense, no need for large parts of the plot. A random sequence of events and it's just not good.
Tucker and Dale vs Evil (2010)
Just a fun movie
It's just an easy, funny horror comedy. One of my favorites.
The Shape of Water (2017)
Good things do not overcome the bad
The camera work, graphics, music and the acting are all top-notch. Unfortunately the plot is kinda ho-hum and makes no sense in parts. There's a few really inappropriate scenes involving graphic sex, dialogue regarding body parts, a scene involving a cat, graphic violence... they added nothing at all to the story. I found myself shaking my head like 5-6 times saying "why did you need to include that?!?"
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
Yes, YES, no, no, NOOOOO.
Let me qualify this review and say that I am an 'average' adult fan of Star Wars. I grew up with the movies (I was 7 when A New Hope was released) and had some of the toys back then. I haven't read any few books and haven't watched the animated series. I loved all of the first series of movies (except maybe the Ewoks) and I consider them classics. The 2nd set of movies were pretty bad, but I liked some aspects and consider Phantom Menace the best of that series. It's Star Wars, so it's still kinda cool still, right?
I thought The Force Awakens was pretty good. I was a little perturbed that it was a knock-off of A New Hope, but that's OK. Things are cyclical, they were playing it safe and, hey, it's Star Wars so it's still kinda cool, right? I like Rogue One, it was OK. I had "hope" that Disney was going to be a good steward of the franchise.
The Last Jedi unfortunately fully steers this series well into the same bucket as Episodes 1,2 & 3. It fully jumps the shark and that is a travesty. Despite having some AWESOME individual scenes and incredible graphics, great acting by Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley, this film suffered in all areas of the plot, reaching too far and just stupid decisions.
Should you go see it in theaters? Of course, you have to, it's Star Wars. Give Disney their money, but you will leave the theater shaking your fist to the sky and cursing Mickey like I did.
So much potential lost.
Star Trek Beyond (2016)
OK, entertaining, not great
Movie was an entertaining romp and worth watching on the big screen. The CGI was simply incredible and it's amazing what they can do these days.
That said, the plot was just meh and had several huge impossibilities or just dumb sci-fi moments. Reminded me of some old Trek movies. Some jokes were funny, some fell flat.
The worst parts above all were too dark, very shaky camera scenes that left you asking, what just happened there? There's no way that someone could follow the details of some of the action scenes.
All in all, I like the previous reboot movies much better, mainly due to plot. Time for another reboot?
Art and Craft (2014)
Very well done
For film that mainly focuses on documenting an odd, old man with very strange behavior, it's very well put together and is fascinating to watch.
As for the critique on here about not exploring the "Why?" surround his behavior, I think the film let's you answer that yourself. It presents all the information in a neutral way and doesn't form an opinion or spoon feed the viewer. Perhaps there is are no answers to - Does he know what he's doing? Is he a bad person? Is he malicious or does he think he's helping in some way? It's a tribute to the film that you aren't left with answers.
You'll be talking about this film long afterwards.
The Theory of Everything (2014)
Hawking's life, not his work
The majority of critics of the movie focus on the fact that it doesn't explore his body of work in detail or, possibly, accurately. While this is a fair assessment, it is NOT the point of the film. While that film would also be fabulous, it's not the story being told here.
This is above-all a LOVE story that delves into his personal life. It's beautifully filmed & edited, wonderfully acted (both deserve the Oscar) and is just a joy. It's fantastic in all respects.
It's sad that film is some bad reviews on here. Even if you wanted to see more science, how could you vote down such a wonderful movie?
PS. If you enjoyed The Imitation Game, you will love this movie.
