Goosebumps (2023)
Not the Goosebumps We Love
I'm a huge horror and science fiction fan. And Goosebumps is one of those fun franchises that has R. L. Stine's humor and campy horror stories that I love. The production in this Hulu show is more like Stranger Things. Not that is a bad thing, but the main characters are not loveable at all. The acting is just barely enough as if they are just ready to leave the set and go get a latte. Justin Long stands out because he's a veteran, and plays his part well. Miles McKenna needs to go back to doing insipid Youtube videos. I don't know why they have to imbue his character with tired tropes. Isa Briones is by far holding it all together from episode to episode with her acting. I'm on episode 6 and hoping it gets better with the direction of the plot, but I'm not expecting much. And every episode has a meeting where all the characters complain and whine instead of moving the story forward. Well, the show is worth watching Justin Long, if you are a fan.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
The League of Extraordinary Stupidity
I've avoided this film like the plague, but decided to sit down and finally watch it. I am a long time Connery fan and Sean could not carry this turkey. Probably a fine film for a kid still watching Transformers or He-man. The sets are spectacular and the effects are fantastic, but the characters are insipid. The cast around Connery are a bunch of amateurs. I found myself laughing at some of the stunts and the goofy theatrics. This film could have been great with more humor and a campy atmosphere mainly because of the ridiculous premise. Take away; excellent sets, special effects, costumes, and photography. The bad; stilled dialogue, unintended humor, terrible casting, awful script.
Ace Crawford... Private Eye (1983)
So much promise
Tim Conway's television sitcom about a bumbling detective. I so much wanted to love this show, but it just doesn't deliver. The laugh tracks are distracting over the numerous gags. I laughed a few times at some of the dialogue. Billy Barty is good in this and made me smile. This lasted only three episodes before they called it quits. There was a lot of promise in this concept. It just misses the mark.
