Cyberbully (2015)
A powerful piece
Taking real life situations and stories, the creators of this one episode drama are geniuses in their work, using emotive languages and even pictures to show how shady the world of the internet can truly be. The main characters actor, Masie Williams, is showing off her true ability and proving, as if anyone would doubt, that she can do much more than just Game of Thrones, with an amazing performance were she superbly expresses the guilt that a person in her position would feel.. It instills a light sense of fear and thrill throughout as the danger is always present and intimidating. It achieves it's goal of also teaching the general public on what they shouldn't do online well. Cyberbully uses the interesting technique of staying in only one place the entire duration, this, as many movies before it have shown, can be tricky and risks getting boring if it isn't executed well, which this certainly was., managing to keep my early attention lasting until the very end. I would definitely recommend this to anyone looking for a thought provoking drama.
The Place Beyond the Pines (2012)
A pleasant surprise!
Going into this movie I didn't know what to expect. I had heard mixed reviews and was intrigued by what I had heard, and you know what? It was a genuinely good movie. The cast is varied and has two very prestigious actors as the main characters. The seamless change between protagonists after the biker, played by Ryan Gosling, dies is to be admired and the psychological effects of events on the cop, played by Bradley Cooper, being only subtly worked in so they are noticed by the viewer is rather impressive. The movie superbly shows the truth behind corruption in the law and how far the people in charge can abuse their power, even though I suspect that may not have been their intention. Also, I thought about what I would give this as I watched the movie I tried to decide what I would give it, I decided on 8, however, as I watched the scene were I discovered the two son's were friends years later I decided for a nine as my mind was blown. The only reason it was not a 10 were some minor things along the movie, and I believe that very few movies are worth full marks.
Open Water (2003)
Looking for an exciting and dramatic movie?
Then, depending on your taste, look elsewhere. This movie has one of the most brutally slow first half's of any movie I have ever bothered to sit through. In the first hour all that happens is we learn about their clichéd marital problems as 'one of them works too much' and we see them get left behind. There is a lot of strenuous build up and both the main characters die incredibly suddenly, within 5 minutes of each other. At times the camera work was terrible and they used the hell out of the bobbing camera in the water technique. Furthermore, the two main character's dialogue doesn't adequately reflect the fact that they are stranded in the middle of an ocean, when they first find out and for the hours following they pretty much just say 'Well darn!' and then have a 'couples' argument, and that part isn't a joke. However, it wasn't all bad and there was actually quite a bit of good. For example, when they are floating at nighttime the effect of lightning is brilliantly used to show their despair and give the scene atmosphere as they are simultaneously attacked by sharks. Also, it is an interesting base plot and I always have to give props to any horror movie that is based on real events, and, after reading up on the actual happening I can say this move has eerily stuck to it with great detail, making it a bit more chilling!
The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)
Chilling to the core!
It is often said that what makes a horror movie truly terrifying is one simple phrase to accompany all the bloodshed, ' Based on a true story'. Never has this been more true for a movie than in 'Texas chainsaw massacre'! As we see the scenes of brutality on our screen, and acts of cannibalism and body dismemberment we think that surely it can only be a thing of imagination, the creation of a writer, only before we will grimly remember that ominous message that we saw at the beginning. It is for this reason, and many others, that this goes down as one of the all time greats of the horror genres. Leather face is among the most iconic of all film characters. From his barely human grunts for communication to his foul acts, he will be remembered with other classics like Michael Myers and Hannibal Lecter. In an ideal world, I would have liked a slightly longer movie but I am aware that is a sort of cap on how long a film of this genre can be before it gets boring and repetitive so I don't hold this against the movie.
Scream (1996)
Clever and dark!
A revolutionary horror movie that was the first to do something that many have tried to copy since, having a vast amount of the traditional horror movie traits, thus managing to instill a sense of danger and despair, all while still managing to not take itself to seriously and still supplying some comedic moments that don't take away from the movie being in the horror genre, this theme being continued throughout the following movies. Scream also manages to make some deaths more than the normal 'stab and the body goes down' kills, with a few imaginative final scenes for characters. An example of this is when Tatum is seemingly going to be stabbed by Ghostface just like the other victims, only for her 'death by garage door'. This, like the aforementioned dark humour, is another notable great feature throughout the series. This is a movie I actively recommend to people in real life and I will keep doing so.
Hercules (2014)
Manages to make all the Greek empire seem like imbeciles!
I would have preferred to have given my money to a group of necrophiliacs. The movie was far too short, just as it was beginning to have some acceptable action it ended. It is full of horrible movie clichés that should belong in the Greek era, and should stay there! An example of one of these clichés is, brace yourself, the guy who hasn't talked for years, spoiler alert, At the end he talks! Amazing! In the first moments 'Hercules' tells us of his 12 labours, a well known tale the would have beaten this movie tenfold. I would not recommend this movie to anyone. The only reason I haven't given it only one star is due to its cast of actors which is surprisingly good, the cast of John Hurt as the big bad guy was, in my opinion, genius.
