Begotten (1989)

I feel I have been tricked.
2 April 2023
I love strange films. I like films that are artsy, thought provoking, and disturbing. So, when I read a review that claims that Begotten nails all categories, I perk up. How have I never heard of this film? Where's it been hiding? After viewing, I wish it had stayed hidden. My reaction is not like one would have viewing something as disturbing and/or odd as something like Salo, Santa Sangre or Irreversible, but more of the reaction someone would have watching I Know What You Did Last Summer. It was not redeemable in any way, shape, or form because it lacked shape and form. This is the type of pretentious garbage a first year art student would make to try and prove to the professor that you are more edgy and transcendent than the rest of the class. And with a world full of which great, beautiful cinema, the idea that this talked about at all is a travesty. Now, if you want to try and impress your friends and make them think that you ahead of the curb and intellectual, then watch it, pretend to love it and share with the world about how special your eye and mind is for film, because that's all this film is good for: to give a voice to the pretentious. But if you have any taste at all, you'll reject this film, never suggest it, and denounce any praise given to this film. Take the time to share and celebrate something really, truly great, because you are worth more than that. The world is worth more to endure this trash or accept that something like this is even capable of existing. Like I Know What You Did Last Summer, Begotten has set the bar so low, it would be a chore to create anything worse. The Art of making something so terrible would be more redeemable because it would be such a feat.

The Munsters (2022)

Not as I expected
28 September 2022
Warning: Spoilers
First off, my kids loved it. They thought it was funny and talked about the fun aesthetics. I wanted to liked this so bad, but man did Zombie make it hard for me to enjoy this. It felt like two hours of Munster "shorts" glued together in attempt to make a cohesive feature film. The visuals kept me engaged and knowing that my kids enjoyed it made it worth while. Not one I'd recommend to a friend, but also not one I'd dog on to a friend either. I also might've rated higher if the ending wasn't so lackluster. I was shocked that Zombie phoned in the final few scenes. I think this film all-in-all could've really used some refinement. Keep your expectations low.
