RRR (Rise Roar Revolt) (2022)
An experience for sure
Highly stylized and definitely not what American audiences are used to. It's definitely worth watching though so suspend your disbelief and let yourself enjoy the story and stunning choreography!
Bulgasal (2021)
Patience pays off
Amazing story and beautiful cinematography, but very dramatic and VERY slow-moving. The premise is super interesting but you don't really learn what it is until the end, so if you're impatient then just watch the first half of the last episode and then start from the beginning. Otherwise it's definitely worth the wait.
Army of the Dead (2021)
It's fun because it's terrible
The Cranberries song at the end is just *chef's kiss*
Do yourself a favor and just think of it as a comedy. Turn it into a drinking game, make a whole night of it. It's better that way.
Charmed (2018)
These reviews are hilarious
So many salty conservatives! This show is fun. Not a masterpiece, but entertaining. And I thoroughly enjoy how it rips on incels and Trump. Given all the complaints about the show's in-your-face progressivism, looks like it has achieved the intended effect of trolling a lot of sad, insecure little snowflakes. I'm giving it 10 stars just to spite them in particular. Party on.
Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (2018)
Teenagers are just the worst.
The story is good. The effects are fun. Zelda, Hilda, and Lillith are fabulous. But the teen drama, coupled with Sabrina's flat character and unapologetic savior complex, sucks the life out of the third season in particular.
Ares (2020)
Dark, atmospheric slow burn
This is a beautifully crafted and unique series that I loved from start to finish. The protagonist isn't your standard predictable hero of the story, and the series takes all the time it needs to develop several complex characters without introducing distracting backstories.
There are obviously supernatural elements to the story, but they are just enough to add an extra level of disturbing to a scenario that's more than disturbing enough on its own.
If you are only in it for jump scares and body horror, this is definitely not the show for you. But if you love suspense, dark surrealism, and a well-made story about humans being terrible to each other, settle in.
Into the Dark: Treehouse (2019)
Embarrassingly bad.
This is a sad, sad attempt at creating commentary on the #metoo movement while fundamentally misunderstanding what it's actually about. If it's trying to empower women, it backfires spectacularly, for one by portraying women who stick up for themselves as literal witches - a tactic which has been used to oppress outspoken women for centuries. Besides that, the writing and acting is so terrible that it makes a caricature out of legitimate dialogue advocates are trying to have. It would almost be funny if it weren't so counterproductive.
Don't waste your time on this movie unless you want a really great example of what happens when men try to speak for women without actually listening to them.
As Above, So Below (2014)
Brush up on your 14th-century lit ahead of time
First off, this movie is essentially a film adaptation of Dante's Inferno, so you'll probably enjoy it more if you do some googling before getting into it.
That said, I thought it was a ton of fun regardless. It had some great scares and definitely lots of creepy moments.
PS bring an inhaler if you're claustrophobic. You're welcome.
