Asthma (2014)
I really wish i had read the rating on here prior to watching the film...
though i probably wouldn't have then watched it, but that's my point. but u never know right? there are some films that get a low rating or people dislike & i think are great (not tons, but a sprinkling) & others that are very highly rated & reviewed that i think are soooo overrated! anyway, i wouldn't say this film was "bad". i don't regret seeing it per se. i regret paying 3 different times on PPV because there was always some type of issue going on. AND i love krysten ritter (though she's getting pretty typecast now, coulda been her exact "breaking bad" character, et al), & iggy pop was in it (LOVE), a lot of great actors in cameos basically. it was just kinda bleh. i was going to say nothing happened, but stuff did happen, it just was kinda pointless & didn't really make me feel anything one way or another. THAT is how i judge films, on what & how much they make me feel! along w/plot, character, storyline, acting, etc etc. cheers :)
Men, Women & Children (2014)
a VERY accurate depiction of how technology/the internet has made us all so "connected" just to be totally DISCONNECTED!
i gave this 8 stars because the subject matter is so dead on & so correct & true, not because i love & adore the movie, though it's well made. it's an uncomfortable & disturbing subject matter, so it's never going to be the feel good movie for anyone. this is the latest jason reitman film? it's a departure from his normal type of thing, though he's been all over the place now w/what he's been making since "juno" & "up in the air", so u can't really say he has a normal type of thing anymore, i suppose. but he is RIGHT on the money w/his statement w/this film. about what the internet & technology is doing to the world. how we are all more connected just to be totally disconnected. this film was SO on point. that doesn't mean i think it's a 4 star movie or whatever, but subject wise, i'd give it that, film wise, i'd probably give it 2-3 stars, or 8 as i did, being this is IMDb & has a different rating system then you normally see. did anyone see "disconnect"? same thing, same type of story, but the REALLY excellent one is "detachment", omg, now THAT was an excellent film!! excellent, excellent. i gave that 10 stars. it's a disturbing & uncomfortable view of the world as well, BUT it has so much heart too, & i do love "disconnect". i think it should be REQUIRED viewing for everyone on the earth!! it's a tony kaye film. even bryan cranston is in it! like everyone is in it, every actor working practically (okay that's an exaggeration, but you get the point), it seems that they love & respect this guy and/or his work SO much, that they will play someone walking by on the sidewalk just to be in his film!! if i weren't in such a hurry right now, i would fully review the above film, but i don't have time & you get the idea. cheers.
Detachment (2011)
This film should be REQUIRED viewing for everyone on the planet!
**This might contain spoilers, I'm not sure, as I haven't written it yet, but i don't wanna be blacklisted! (okay, i finished writing & there are no spoilers):P Anyway, for starters, I just gave it 10 stars, which I rarely, if ever do! That is how amazing, disturbing, touching, RELEVANT & everything else this film is. (I cap words that I'm putting emphasis on, is that verboten on here? As I've written reviews w/caps in it & had them not be able to post no matter how many times I tried. I didn't "break" any rules, in any way, so I still am not sure what is going on there). This film goes straight to the root of the largest problem in our society. Detachment. Being more "connected" (i.e. all of the phone, internet stuff where you are "connected" to everyone in the world & everyone you ever knew and yet you are more disconnected then you have ever been. People don't talk to each other anymore, rarely. Don't actually CALL each other, or go out & see each other face to face. Sure there are exceptions, but I'm biding my time waiting for the day when none of us will ever leave our homes & just stay connected through technology. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for technology, but NOT at this price! I could go on and on about this movie, but I won't. Suffice to say that there is a plethora of A list, excellent actors in this film. Mostly cameos. They have a couple of lines, if that. That says to me that the subject matter/the script/the director/all of the above...something called to each of them to be in such a movie, no matter how tiny the role. It is a must see, as simple as that!
Rock of Ages (2012)
omg, do NOT see this film!!!!!!!!!!
it is HORRIBLE, TERRIBLE, not even in a funny way!!! (ps. when i capitalize words IMDb, i am NOT shouting, i am putting emphasis ON the word i want emphasis on). i knew i wasn't a fan of the majority of the music going in, but i know that music anyway, but man oh man, this movie is just AWFUL!! beyond awful. it may well be one of the worst films i've EVER seen & i'm a huge film buff/connoisseur & i will see almost anything, even though my standards are high and a film has to be a truly great film for me to give it kudos. i'm not a film snob, but there has to be SOME redeeming value somewhere, or at least entertainment value. that IS the purpose of movies, is it not? this one, no. i would have rather sat through surgery than this crappy movie!! last but not least, tom cruise's performance is just laughable. i know that that is semi intentional, but it was like watching a train wreck. blech. i don't get it, adam shankman (and some of these actors), HAVE done stuff that i've liked, admired or respected & yet the majority of the time shankman just cranks out pure trash!! does he just have no taste level?
Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001)
one of my ALL time favorite films!!!!!
And that is saying something, because i'm a total filmophile (yes, it's in the urban dictionary)and i used to work in the movie industry as well. i'm incredibly picky and have been called a film snob. but i LOVE and adore hedwig, the music is outstanding (one of my fav soundtracks as well), the story is great. their is humor, honesty, sadness, the reality of hardships and levity as well. it has it all. it should touch you, make you angry, make you laugh, make you cry, all the while grooving to the incredible music. john cameron mitchell is a HUGE talent (as just proved by his Oscar nomination for "rabbit hole", he was nominated for hedwig as well but due to the fact that it had been a play prior to the film, he was not qualified for certain nominations, "best original...." anything, because it had already been in the play). he plays the role amazingly well, touches you, breaks your heart and makes you REALLY feel for hedwig and his/her plight. everyone does a great job in the film. watch for stephen trask as well (as lead guitarist in hedwig's band) he is the songwriter, an amazing talent. hedwig will ALWAYS be one of my fav films ever and i HIGHLY recommend it, even to the homophobic, ESPECIALLY to the homophobic.
