Brickleberry (2012)
Look at us, we're Edgy!
When a cartoon purports to be dark and off the wall humor, for it to be good it must have certain aspects. Something like South Park does this very well because the jokes make sense, and all connect to what the main topic is about for each episode. South Park is able to adeptly blend offensiveness into it's humor to create it's trademark style, and sheds life onto many problems this world has, but in a clever way. What isn't clever, is slapping in random offensive jokes just to get a laugh, and that's what BrickleBerry is. There is nothing edgy about this show, it's just South Park's humor but dumbed down to even more child like levels. Like I said, I don't mind offensive humor, but there are times when one of the characters says something offensive, and the other characters just stand there staring at the speaker for like 10 seconds. This is supposed to be time for me to laugh, but I never cracked a smile throughout the whole thing. The animation is awful, it's like if Family Guy was made by a high school student. and that's really a pretty good analogy for the show as a whole. They throw in jokes they EXPECT you to laugh at, but they are just weird and uncomfortable. Blatant racism, sexism, and drawn-out awkward moments, this show is the worst.
Les triplettes de Belleville (2003)
How do I begin?
I remember the first time I watched this movie, it was with my parents when I was around 10 or 11, and I remember thinking, "what the hell just happened?" and you may too, after the first time. This largely wordless animation comes from the great Sylvain Chomet, a brilliant animator who's only other full length movie is The Illusionist, which is just as good and should be checked out if you like this one. To summarize, this film is pretty far out there in obscurity, most people I've asked about have never heard about it, and it's pretty easy to see why. The film is chock full of bizarre quirks and weird happenings, I won't deny it, and the character models are incredibly ugly and deformed, but you have to agree there is some level of charm to them, and the setting is beautiful. I could gush about this movie for hours, but please give it a shot, its something else.
The Missing Scarf (2013)
Didn't See this one Coming...
Every year, a few weeks before the Oscars, a movie theater nearby me shows the nominees for the best animated shorts this year, along with a few highly commended ones. This last year, yet another one of those Gruffalo animations was nominated, this one admittedly more tolerable than the first two, was dull and I just didn't think I deserved to be nominated, kids don't need this overly repetitive storyline. Anyway, my point is that I really didn't want to have to sit through another story like that.
So after the nominees, then started the highly commended ones, and if memory serves, The Missing Scarf was the first one. The thing that immediately put me off was the animation, very flat and colorful except for the squirrel of course, and paired with the cheerful music, I thought it might be some sort of ad for Google, considering it was a similar style. When I realized that this was going to be another Gruffalo like story, I groaned, and sadly waited the story out, and I'm glad I did. I won't spoil much, but at a certain point, the film takes a very dark but hilarious turn, which completely caught me off guard. The very end will just make you say "What?" and "Wow." and thats pretty much it. The world has done so many things now that are shocking that me and most of society have become jaded by all of it, so for something to genuinely surprise me clever wit and humor, it really is something. Also there's George Takei. 10/10
