MILF (2018)
Refreshing take on holiday romance
The story plays out really similarly to traditional holiday romance films, the fun free feeling you get on holiday, and how you feel at your best. I loved how they showed this experience from the perspective of three women in their 40s, it was really funny and silly and the characters were likeable and interesting. I laughed throughout.
I really liked how real they made the relationship dynamics, the story didn't vilify any of the main characters, and instead showed how hard it is to navigate different feelings and circumstances.
A brilliant fun escapist chick flick to laugh along to with friends.
The Hating Game (2021)
Best rom com I've ever seen - great sexual tension
I was hooked throughout, immediately attached to how it was going to play out, brilliant acting from both leads, Joshua created such a strong sense of withheld yearning that gave Luce a great platform to bounce off and explore her feelings. Hilarious banter between the two leads that was so clever and veiled the true lust beneath.
I loved how in control Luce was so it never felt unbalanced or like anything was unforgivable. Great characterisation from all, especially the leads who balanced really well comic deadpan with kindness.
Everything I wish for in a rom com but rarely find. Perfectly formed!
The Sea Beast (2022)
Best kids film I've seen - great diversity and morals
I've never seen a film with such an equal balance of gender and race and disability. The king and queen's guards are women and men, the random villager is a woman, the random cart driver is a woman. I can't think of any other kids film where there's actually a 50/50 split if you consider all non speaking characters.
Much better moral the how to train your dragon too. The point is there's no such thing as good and evil. The quote repeated in the film that "you can have been a hero but have been wrong" is the point. It's not "beasts are actually good and kind", they're not, they kill the same way the hunters kill. The point is that fighting because you think the other side is bad is wrong. In how To train your dragon they team up against another evil, the point in this film is that there's no such thing as the good/ bad guys.
Really great character animation and voice acting. I could watch this again and again, and that's saying something for most children's films.
Rosaline (2022)
Kaitlyn is hilarious
I really loved watching Kaitlyn's dry and physical comedy. She was so watchable and so many hilarious expressions and gestures that weren't in the script, I just enjoyed seeing how she was going to interpret each scene! And Sean (Dario) was great too, enough humility mixed into the confidence that made him likeable and his feelings believable. I really enjoyed watching this silly interpretation of the timeless earnestness of teenage love. Shakespeare's R&J was also a comedy up until people started dying, I like how this film took the comedic and relatable aspects of the story through someone that wasn't so blindly swept up in the drama. Everything I look for in a romantic comedy!
