Darkest Case (2014)
Amazing web series
Thomas Frick has managed to do the impossible with very limited means and made a web series with 3 seasons to boot. Crime shows don't generally interest me but I dig the vibe Frick has created for his show. I love the world building that went into the show and the storyline is generally thought out but at times the limited budget and resources show. I think if the show is to continue, Thomas Frick should use a new and original villian and stick to what Dexter did for most of its run of having him tackle a new foe more dangerous than the one before while sorting out his private life. Overall the production value is great for what it is and guerilla filmmaking at its finest. Some legit professional television shows are inferior to Darkest Case because of stale writing and not trying anything new. Having worked on a couple of Frick's short films, he has his work cut out for him and more organized than a lot of productions. My only other critic his short films are way too similar in the plot and style of Darkest Case. Seeing Clinton Bailiff act as one of the main villains is worth the binge watching of the whole series.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2022)
A cinematic miracle
I am a amateur filmmaker that still believes cinema is an escape but James Cameron is one of the few working right now making it so. The cgi is 100% better from the original, any better it would be physically Navi flesh. While the VFX/CGI are very realistic, the overall movie is on par with the first one. The story is more original instead of being a Dances With Wolves rip off but is 30 minutes too long and Sigourney Weaver simply cannot play a teenager even with motion capture. Stephen Lang has the best character development making his character more menacing and intelligent than before. The underwater scenes are worth the cost of seeing the movie in IMAX 3D.
The Christmas Ride (2020)
A Florida Christmas
Stefanie Davis' Christmas Ride captures the spirit of the holiday in a new way by focusing on issues ailing the passengers of a ride share driver. Each issue is relevant to many with holiday woes but Stefanie makes it feel personal to us without heavily relying on time old traditions seen in most christmas films. I encourage anyone to view it and who knows it might rekindle some holiday magic thats been lost in the year 2020.
Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019)
Death of a franchise
I understand its not easy making a movie but Rise of Skywalker sums up why most big blockbusters this year underperformed. Everything in this movie was hacked together, poor executed, and no real character development. It was literally watching JJ Abrams put on screen every idea he could think of because he could. There are two ice planets and two desert planets in this movie for lack of originality. Palpatine was brought back as an attempt to make more money and his plan to bring forth the Final Order is the worst evil genius plan of all time. The movie features the laziest lightsaber duel of all time and other lazy and uninspired action scenes. The biggest space battle in Star Wars history is also the most anti-climatic. I can go on all day but one of the greatest movie franchises of all time is finally reduced to nothing in the name of maximizing profits instead of delivering something of quality. The prequels had their own issues that George Lucas mostly rectified in Revenge of the Sith but the JJ Abrams Sequel trilogy went completely downhill once Last Jedi came out and rock bottom with this movie. Despite the leaks and whatnot, the ending actually is pretty decent, maybe a bit hokey to some but most of the dramatic moments in the movie are quickly undone by pointless scenes and exposition. This was a sad way to end a 9 film saga. Rogue One and Solo outshine Episodes VIII and IX. Wait till its on video if I were you.
