Samaritan (2022)
It's OK, Just Way To Corny!
Hello From Here - I wish this story had more to it. If only it was Rocky fighting the rounds in this movie rather than Stallone's new character, Joe, that feels like a soft imitation.
The movie looks good. It's well presented with a realistic gritty feel to the city. The problem is apart from Stallone's surprisingly decent performance the rest of the cast are lacking. You don't care about the characters, the story is handled poorly and you never invest. It all feels very light.
With many moments of the film just plain corny, the action feeling as though it's aimed at a younger audience, it never become exciting or feels as though there's real danger. The final blow is a bad guy that quickly turns from interesting and menacing to a kids pantomime baddy! It's a real shame!
The Northman (2022)
Skip This & Find "Vikings" The TV Series!
Hello From Here - Lets get straight to the point, this is a rusty dull axe blade of a film! For a real experience of pillaging & adventure watch the amazing Vikings TV series.
This movie looks the part, obviously having had time & money spent on set design, costumes & actors. Then it's completely let down by the lack of any substance with battle scenes missing the blood & gore, awful fight choreography and no depth in the storytelling. There's never any real tension or threat!
Add to this a slight spiritual element, a sprinkling of mythical events that feels shoehorned in, it's all incredibly flat with little excitement. It's not as bad as The Green Knight but feels as though it's borrowed style ques from that appalling movie. As I've said, if you want vikings then watch the brilliant TV series, the quality here is nowhere near that!
Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers (2022)
Rescue Rangers... Hold On, Wait, Really?!
Hello From Here - What an absolute enjoyable surprise! What a bizzare reboot and it actually works! I'm still smiling. I tried to give it an 8 but this deserves 9 Stars all day long.
This is as close as any live action/animation has got to the king of the genre, Who Framed Roger Rabbit. It's not as big or as stylish but this hits so many comedy and nostalgic marks that you can't help but get sucked into all the onscreen craziness.
This has the feel of Space Jam, is as good as the first Sonic but it's doing its own thing, carving its own path and it's refreshingly different. There's genuine laugh out loud moments, very adult humour and real drama for a reboot of a kids cartoon. I still can't quite believe how much I enjoyed this!
Bosch: Legacy (2022)
Spinoff??? This is Bosch & This Is Excellent!
Hello From Here - This spinoff series is every bit Bosch, so much so it's impossible to see it as a separate show. Incredibly Bosch: Legacy manages to pip the original shows huge 9 Star rating from me to gain a full 10 Stars.
The lead, Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch is back and once again is absolutely brilliant to watch. It's hard to pin point what Bosch: Legacy has improved over Bosch. The original is perhaps slightly rougher in it's story telling, it's free wielding with a lot going on at all times. This latest outing is ever so slightly neater, coming together with a better focused storyline. It's not as raw, it's just tighter some how. Then again it's that very dark raw experience that made the original so outstanding!
Watch them all as both shows are not to be missed. You get compelling characters with real depth and complexity, you will not be disappointed. It's all fantastic TV!
Walk of Shame (2014)
Funny, Charming And One Sexy Dress!
Hello From Here - Re-watching this comedy in 2022 it still stands tall all these years on from release. It's charming, has a genuine innocence about it and keeps you entertained from start to finish with its fun adventure format.
Elizabeth Banks absolutely makes this film and her little yellow dress steals every scene! Seriously, she and it are stunning! Banks plays bubbly and quirky beautifully, as well as being as hot as lava. As crazy predicaments come thick and fast Banks leads the movie perfectly through every off the wall situations and comedy mishap.
Completely Ingnore the low score in the 6s, this is a strong 8 Stars and a genuinely fun comedy adventure. Get watching.
Morbius (2022)
No Joke(r), This Is A Terrible Bat Man!
Hello From Here - What on earth is this?! I mean, what on earth is this meant to be? Who is it aimed at?
No style, no substance, no feeling of tension and loop holes so big that you could drive a truck through them! It is a vampire movie missing the blood, the guts, the fear, it simply does not make sense. This needed to be so much bolder, eclipse the exciting action of Blade or Underworld but this has none of that character development or depth.
What a waste of talented actors. This feels as flat as the original Suicide Squad, the Venom movies, Green Lantern. Don't waste your time, please, there is nothing going on here!
Halo (2022)
Some Great Highs, Too Many Lows!
Hello From Here - What a mixed bag. Knowing very little of Halo, briefly playing the game in my youth, I'm an outsider to this world. Overall the show delivers some enjoyable TV and manages to give audiences a finale that stokes interest for a second series.
The biggest issue is the uneven storytelling. It really is all over the place and drastically takes away from anything done well. The special FX go from movie quality to looking like something from a teenagers bedroom computer! It genuinely is appalling at times for no reason as it is great at others?! Then the multiple storylines. This show needs to stick with the Master Chief, the army, the battles, the politics of it all. PLEASE no more Kwan Ha story arch! It's badly acted garbage, she's a terrible character that absolutely drags down the show's appeal!
Overall Halo is passable and worth a watch for the Master Chief storyline. It could have been great but the Kwan Ha story arch completely pulls the show apart from good to bad. The Master Chief arch is the money and exciting to watch, lets hope Series 2 sticks to that.
Mayor of Kingstown (2021)
Huge Depth And Weight, Incredible TV!
Hello From Here - 10 Stars, I got to shout that out immediately! What an amazing experience this show is! We know Jeremy Renner can act but this is something else! Every character feels huge with Renner being unbelievably good! A special mention must go to Emma Laird, she leaves everything on the table with this performance, absolutely outstanding!
There are plenty of excellent police/political shows portraying the gritty realism of life that we recognise. This series is different with its weaving story about a city and hierarchy of power in environments that aren't familiar. It's beautiful to see something new. These oppressive surroundings feel foreign yet still leap from the screen fully engaging you!
The sheer chest crushing weight of the storytelling, the palpable heaviness of the actor's performances, is superbly visualised and masterfully portrayed on-screen. There is no casual viewing here. It's like being trapped in headlights, you can't move, you can't look away, the characters just run right over you! This series never lets up whilst perfectly balancing the raw sleazy darkness it continually depicts. This show will get deep under your skin and stay long in your mind!
Antebellum (2020)
Superb Acting And Original Story
Hello From Here - Never hearing of this movie, actually looking to watch another film entirely, Antebellum started strong and I was hooked within minutes.
Firstly, the cast is excellent, rounded characters that are simplistic but fit the story and feel fully formed. Add to this the rich visuals and tone, you are pulled deep into the plot from the very beginning. This is more of a psychological drama than a true horror and it's well put together.
The stand out highlight for this film is the unusual and darkly original story line with interesting twists and turns throughout. With a short runtime it's all pleasantly straight to the point. There is a huge amount to like here. I simply do not understand the ridiculously low 5.7 Stars?!
King Richard (2021)
Amazing Queens, The King Is Dead :/
Hello From Here - It's enjoyable seeing the story of where the Williams sisters came from and how they got to where they are today.
The acting by nearly all is convincingly portrayed, you feel as though you are watching the young lives of the family as they strive towards tennis supremacy. The other leads, noticeably Saniyya Sidney (Venus), Demi Singleton (Serena) and supporting cast members put in big believable performances.
The major letdown, the linchpin that fails to pull it all together is surprisingly Will Smith himself! Smith looks as though he is "acting" the part, playing a role, it sadly feels unconvincing especially when held up against the rest of the stellar cast around him. His mannerisms and voice used come across as forced, as though Smith is doing a caricature and it misses realism. Compared to all the other strong performances Smith's role is visibly lacking.
For a one off watch this is definitely worth your time but Smith is not at his best and it really shows as his character is so front and centre. It's a real shame.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Extremely Good But Never Great
Hello From Here - What Marvel deliver is a solid third outing of the Spider-Man saga. Everything including the kitchen sink is thrown at this story. With all that said, No Way Home still misses that polish and shine to make it feel as special as previous installments.
The big issue is the CGI, it's extremely noticeable, not enhancing the action but taking it over. Even the simplist scenes that should look natural have this over processed CGI effect. With years and years of beautiful realism in Marvel movies, superheroes brought to life in our world on screen, our cities, our landmarks, this world looks fake with environments more akin to a well shot video game.
The performances save the day here, the on screen chemistry absolutely shines. What you see between characters feels genuine and heartfelt bringing real sincerity to the storytelling. Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Holland) and MJ (Zandaya) are the best version I've seen with Zandaya finally fitting the character that has felt miss cast in every other movie. There are still moments that are at odds. After all that's happened to Holland's Spider-Man during many films, he starts off here as childish, immature, coming across as still being an innocent and nieve young teen. To then have some cuts and bruises, turning to violence and vengeance did not work. Holland did not pull this character change off, he simply was not dark enough.
There is a lot to enjoy here with an amazing story being told by the actors. The look and feel is not at the high standard we expect from Marvel, it's not the best but it's still very good!
Star Trek: Discovery (2017)
What On Earth Happened?!
Hello From Here - What a mission! I forced myself to watch series 3, then series 4, to give a fully rounded review but it has been hard work!
Series 1 & 2 blew me away, absolutely stunning Sci-Fi, possibly 9 Stars. Discovery - s1 & s2 and also The Expanse are some of the best Sci-Fi I can remember. But then....
It all falls apart! Discovery - s3 & s4 are excruciating to watch. Badly acted, disgracefully weak scripts, characters that make you cringe at how poorly they are now portrayed. A heavily female lead cast that's rammed down your throat, a pathetic non binary (I guess) couple for absolutely no reason other than to say it's represented in the show! Oh, and let's not forget the gay male couple that looks after them, just so the studio can say they're inclusive and current!
None of the this would matter if it was to better the production. But it's badly put together, badly thought out and has pushed the quality and depth of storytelling straight off a cliff. PLEASE watch s1 & s2, they truly are separate and have no connection with the mess that starts from series 3. I'm still utterly shocked at what Discovery has become!
Bosch (2014)
Not To Be Missed!
Hello From Here - Bosch is a complete winner, what a surprise! The show stands up to comparison with the best police dramas: The Wire, True Detective, earlier Law and Order:SUV.
What's portrayed is a gritty atmosphere, the dark dirty realism of city crime complimented by superb quality casting. The show has such suspenseful drama, murder mystery that pulls you in and keeps you engaged series after series.
The lead, Titus Welliver as Harry Bosch is absolutely stunning to watch. The raw frustration, the struggle against the almost invisible line between policing and becoming something darker to seek justice, never actually knowing if this ticking time bomb of anger and angst will explode, is disturbingly beautiful to see and completely engrossing!
If you haven't seen this amazing series then absolutely start it, you will not be disappointed!
Marry Me (2022)
Not Enough Rom or Com!
Hello From Here - This film is alright, nice, an OK watch for free. It's sad as being a cheesy RomCom isn't the problem, it's the lack of both character depth and chemistry between the 2 leads that sinks this ship.
Lopez and Wilson bring really familiar versions of likable characters that have been played in many of their other movies. The big issue here is that these versions are incredibly generic, light, very underdeveloped. And then there's the 3, yes, I said 3 typically grouchy smart mouthed comic sidekicks, not one being used effectively or given proper screen time.
This could have been a great easy to watch movie but instead you have a story that's very uninvolving for the viewer. As long as you don't expect much it's passable.
Remo Williams: The Adventure Begins (1985)
A Solid 80s Adventure
Hello From Here - When you consider that this movie was released in 1985 it still delivers a solid watching experience in 2022. It's surprising how well it holds up and how much entertainment it still gives so many years on!
This is a typical 80s action setup, yes it's a bit clunky in places, yes times and attitudes have changed but what you get is an exciting fun adventure with acting and storyline that still keeps you glued to the screen. With its simple story, gritty feel and characters that are light in depth but still relatable, the well acted and slightly camp fun feel all adds up to an action movie that's definitely worth your time.
Copshop (2021)
Wham, Bam, No Thank You Ma'am
Hello From Here - This is a strange one as all the elements for a good film are here, the movie looks and feels the part, but it somehow falls flat.
Butler and Grillo put in great performances, sleezy and menacing! There's dishonest coppers, violent assassins, twists that build up suspense with all the characters doing a fine job acting their parts. But even with a good level of action and gun play the story isn't particularly exciting, doesn't connect, it's watchable but not engrossing. The good performances from all don't fill in what's lacking.
For a simple action flick to kill a bit of time this is an OK watch but it is definitely a poor imitation of better movies out there.
Eternals (2021)
Dull, Dire And Drawn Out!
Hello From Here - This truly is the worst entry in the MCU to date. And that's really saying something when you think back to 2003 and Ang Lee's Hulk! I saw no fanfare or hype for this movie, it just seemed to appear. Now I understand why, this spectacle has no substance.
The actors do give it gusto, putting in a serious dramatic effort giving a more theatrical performance. Sadly the storyline has nothing for them to do! There is so little excitement and the super powers so underwhelming that the watching experience is simply dull.
Why on earth this offering would make a great new "Phase" in the MCU is completely beyond me?! The characters have so little that's special, the action so unimaginative, the film feels very disconnected from the Marvel universe and adds zero to what's come before.
Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021)
I'm Afraid Of No Story
Hello From Here - It's so very disappointing to say that there's not much of the Ghostbusters feel here. The story is thin, interesting ideas but very thin, that then drags on and on with plot holes left, right and centre! The whole film is build up, introduction but with no suspense and very little fun action.
What's glaringly missing is the Ghostbusters charm. After an entire movie of good acting but a completely hollow storyline, you finally get that moment where you feel like a kid again. It all falls into place for the last 20 glorious minutes. It's such a shame, nearly the entire movie feels lacking, just a huge missed opportunity and not a strong start for this to be the new franchise.
The Wire (2002)
Something Very Special
Hello From Here - Knowing how highly rated The Wire is I never got around to starting it. I have just binged watched all 5 series over 5 days! Wow, this has everything going on!
Considering the original broadcast started in 2002, watching The Wire in 2021 you still get a stunning mix of gritty storytelling, humour, violence and life on the street that feels very current and very real.
The first 3 series are very good but series 4 and 5 turn a seriously good show into something great. Adding elements of politics, wider community and social commentary, moving slightly away from "the wire", itself, absolutely elevates the experience. Every actor, performance, situation is beautifully portrayed and the realism jumps from the screen!
I wish I had watched this back in the day as I can imagine it feeling completely groundbreaking in the early 2000s. Sit down and start the journey!
What If...? (2021)
What If...? This Was Great?!
Hello From Here - This series is a quality addition to the MCU! With 9 episodes altogether you get 1 or 2 "good" episodes with all the rest being excellent.
The wit, charm and comic one liners of the movies are all here with a few episodes having compelling drama that genuinely leaves you with a lump in your throat and opened jawed! There is a slight grate on the ear hearing some characters not being voiced by the original cast. But many of the voices are the actors we know and love, this really does add to the production value and all the voice acting is brilliantly done.
This animation is no second rate spinoff, it's a genuine Marvel experience that's not to be missed.
Click (2006)
One Of The Greats!
Hello From Here - I'm stunned at seeing Click scraping a score just over 6 Stars?! Watching this film many times over many years it still holds up in 2021 and it's an extremely strong 8 Stars.
The mix of family angst, comedy, Sci-Fi, a stellar cast and real heart warming moments is truly balanced beautifully. There's everything here from full on whacky characters, belly laughs to scenes that are much darker and moments that genuinely bring a tear to your eye.
This movie has heart, a real charm with comedy that's fun and lighthearted whilst dealing with some big moral questions. There's an innocence to the story telling, real family fun that works for all ages. Absolutely don't miss this over the ridiculous score!
Free Guy (2021)
Ryan Reynolds Is All 5 Stars!
Hello From Here - Lets cut straight to the chase, this is no Ready Player One. The clever nods and connections to the gaming world, the interesting plot, the sheer nostalgic feel Ready Player One had for new and old gamers alike, is sadly missing!
What works is Ryan Reynolds as Guy, yet another very recognisable character that's charming, funny and smart mouthed. But then no other actor is given much material to work with. The romantic element is handled so badly by Jodie Comer's Millie/Molotovgirl that there is no chemistry between either Guy in the game or Keys (Joe Kerry) in the real world!
With a sprinkling of other poorly acted side characters and a villain that belongs on stage in a pantomime, there is not much here. You do get a few small fun moments that keep you watching to the end, but it's all just "okay" when it could have been SO much better.
Mortal Kombat Legends: Scorpion's Revenge (2020)
Another Mortal Kombat, Really?!
Hello From Here - Wow, holy hell raisers! Who would of ever guessed that this franchise could release another good MK movie?! Since the fun 1995 original it's been a journey straight off a cliff edge for MK fans!
Scorpion's Revenge is a film that completely bucks the trend of the endless MK sequel failures! This film is superbly drawn, animated beautifully with gore and violence that earns its R rating and perfectly fits the world of MK! With an involving storyline strengthened by great voice actors, this is a fun and exciting watch!
It's easy to think that this is yet another poorly made movie, more garbage to join all that's come after the original, but "GET OVER HERE" now! Give this a watch, it's definitely worth your time!
The Green Knight (2021)
Incoherent & Unnecessary
Hello From Here - What on earth was this about? A great cast with absolutely no direction from start to finish! Imagine a film where the main character has been slipped a little LSD and is tripping, that's not the story but this is all I kept thinking!
The pace is incredibly slow with no payoff. It's just so slow. There are a few visually unique looking moments, the story taking some interesting turns but it adds up to nothing, it all means nothing. This is no Excalibur!
It's so bizarre and unnecessary, a story not needing to be told. The close up camera shots, the spars looking sets, it all comes across looking cheap when it obviously isn't. You're missing nothing here!
BoJack Horseman (2014)
An Absolute Surprise!
Hello From Here - I may be late to this party but, boy, am I pleased I came! Series 1 to 5 is a very strong 8 Stars. Episode after episode the quality never fades! But series 6 was so on point, so depressingly dark and superbly realised that it pushed the entire series to a 9 Star show!
You have to understand that these are unpolished looking cartoons with weird human/animal characters that last less than 30 minutes each. This sounds all kinds of wrong but it is beautifully put together. The amount of heft and weight in the storytelling shines through the bizarre environment the show is set in! Every character, no matter how strange, hits a nerve and hits home. It's brilliant!
