Love Hard (2021)
Feel good without being too corny.
6.5 overall, but a solid 8 as far as holiday romance movies go. I fully expected this to be super corny and stuffed with bad music and cliches but it wasn't too bad at all, it was very warming.
I actually got a bit tired of Nina Dobrev after watching Degrassi: The Next Generation and The Vampire Diaries but I can see she toned her acting down a bit and she is doing very well. Some people never mature in their acting skills.
Jimmy O. Yang was an instant lovable actor for me. His Josh played a great parallel to Nina's Natalie.
I don't normally say this, but I think I'll end up throwing this one back on next year closer to the holiday seasons. It doesn't lose all watchability after one view.
Check it out if you're a fan of the genre. Don't expect a lot of comedy, by the way.
Four Good Days (2020)
Emotionally touching.
Great performances by Glenn and Mila. I haven't connected with a movie this well in awhile.
I feel like the mother daughter relationship was played out very well, especially in an early scene where you can just tell that's the first time mom has washed daughters hair probably since she was a young child.
If you're looking for something to make you feel.. that isn't a tearjerker or a feel good movie.. but a fair mix of emotions.. this is right for you.
The Witches (2020)
My daughter hated the ending of this movie!! Don't waste your kid's time. It's awful.
My daughter was enjoying this remake up until the ending. She kept asking me to reassure her that the kids would get turned back from being mice. I said surely they will.. yes.. definitely..
This movie remake is definitely not good enough to be more than mildly entertaining for adults, so I am not sure why they would leave the ending so traumatic for kids to think the kids got stuck as mice forever, and having a shorter life. (I say that having rewatched the 1990 version recently, and still thinking the face reveal part was pretty gruesome but that it was totally kid friendly in comparison to this.)..
So thanks for keeping my daughter's interest for a full movie's length time only to break her heart at the end. 0/10
Knuckleball (2018)
Great use of free time.
I recommend you avoid reading top reviews as I ended up reading spoilers for the "twist" before even starting the movie. You are better off going in knowing nothing.
7/10 because it's not easy to keep me off the phone during movies, and it definitely did. Also it was nice seeing Munro Chambers all grown up.
Midsommar (2019)
Best movie ever! Was not this one...
This movie was going somewhere, until the artsy shartsy took over. Apparently a bunch of out of shape nude people is ominous and honestly, zip me up in a bear suit and burn me alive for a 7/10.
This movie was only interesting with the hope something may eventually happen that made sense, and then, nothing does.
It was truly just gross for no reason. Nothing here made this stand out. If you're a total recluse who has never seen a movie before, then maybe it gets a 7/10, and that's a stretch...
What I mean is watch this total waste of time, and vote on it honestly, because clearly the shill votes have dictated how unhorrible this is.
The Furies (2019)
Not bad.
I went in expecting nothing, as should you. Don't believe the hype. It was a good way to kill a little over an hour, that much is true.
As another person said, the ending is a downfall. I wasn't a fan given that I just watched another movie with a similar ending yesterday.
I'd say up until the last 10 mins it deserved a 6. I dunno, just feel they could've done much better with it.
So if you're bored and looking for something to watch with lots of death and some actually well done special effects makeup, and not think much more into it, give it a go.
Haunt (2019)
It kept me on edge.
I feel like a 6 is fair for this one. Don't get the 10 and 1 star reviews.
This movie is not deep and doesn't invest you in a backstory for the villains. I would like to know more about them.
Of course some parts seemed illogical i.e. why is this group of kids (or rather a couple of them) better equipped to fight than a bunch of bad guys who set up this intricate house full of traps and mazes. The bad guys truly sucked at fighting.
If I think too deeply about it, I could see why it gets a lower rating from many but I know better than to take a serial killer haunted house themed movie too seriously.
I jumped once towards the end and was in suspense the rest of the time. So all in all, worth a watch, especially alone at night.
The Passage (2019)
New favorite series, hopeful for season two!!
So it seems the negative trend here is that people who read the books wanted the series to be identicle... but if you read or listen to any of what Mark-Paul Gosselaar says about the series ahead of watching, you'd know that they weren't angling to make it exactly the same.
Here comes some mild spoilers, and my own plot synopsis.
To simplify the plot, a bunch scientists and a federal agent (Mark-Paul Gosselaar) take some death row inmates to test on and attempt to create a cure for all diseases, inspired by one of the scientist's wife's rapidly declining health.
Instead, they wind up creating some super virus that kills the inmates and then turns them into vampires. (If you're thinking it sounds like an old/tired premise, just give it a shot. I promise the way the series delivers vampires is pretty awesome.)
Somewhere between them finding out the stuff they're putting into the inmates is actually bad, they send The Agent to take Amy Bellefonte (Saniyya Sidney) from her foster mother to test the drug on. They believe age is a factor in why the cure hasn't succeeded yet. Amy is the perfect kid to take as she has a very troubled past and would likely not be missed.
What follows is a lot of great storyline, really good acting and you really get emotionally involved with a lot of the characters and their pasts. This series was a really great ride and I will likely be watching season 1 again. I have high hopes that it will return for season 2, although the finale did leave it off well if that doesn't happen.
Give it a chance!!
