The Champ (1979)
Awwww this is such an emotional film
I cannot stop but thinking if there is a chocolate called The Champ, the "I want The Champ!" scene will be a great pun.
The Champ is a good film that it makes you cry (I guess everybody knows that by now) but really, the inconsolable T.J. (Ricky Schroder) makes the room really dusty all of a sudden. But what's important in this movie is the relationship between a boy and his father, packed with 'cryable' scenes.
The story revolves around the relationship of a boy named T.J. with his father - T.J. loved him so much that he will do everything for his father (aww such a great kid) and his father couldn't be more bad ass but responsible. Pain in the ass. It stretches him between his bad habit and his responsibility as a father which later led him back into boxing to improve their life.
I won't say much because you have to watch it in spite of the poor rating of this amazing film.
Little Lord Fauntleroy (1980)
Heartwarming. Really touches you.
Ricky's interview with Merv Griffin on Youtube led me to this little gem of heartwarming film...and that makes his role in Little Lord Fauntleroy real.
This movie is sooo old that my friend laughed at me for watching it. I introduce it to my other friend the same way (the interview from Youtube then the film) and she believed his role to be real. This is the type of movie that I will add in my all-time favorite list (or old-time favorite maybe?? :D) because it makes you feel good.
Ceddie (Ricky Schroder) is so innocent that he assume his grandpa to be lovely and kindhearted even before meeting the Earl of Dorincourt. The truth is the earl is a strict person. And because of that, he changes everything - instead of learning on how to be an earl, he teach his grandpa on how to be a responsible earl. Along the process, Ceddie wins the heart of his grumpy grandpa and the villagers in his most adorable way.
Everybody must watch this and I assure you, you will melt and left with a very good feeling. You'll be jiggered on how this film touches you and I promise, it won't let you down.
"Not by a long shot!"
Oliver Twist (2005)
Not favorable to me. Simply, I did not enjoy my 2 hours.
I think this adaptation is not good. I can take my eyes of it, yes you read it right I CAN. This is what happen when a movie is stuffed with too much tragedy in the story line but dealt with less emotion. The feel does not vibe out of the characters that their performance is basically delivered but not effective and believable.
The actors did not have the natural character they need to have in order to play that part. Dodgers was obviously trying hard to be artful that I try to convince myself he is the Artful Dodger, in other words he was not convincing. Oliver possessed the innocent look but not enough begging in his face. When you look at his expression, you cannot 'experience' the tragic. I guess that is what's lacking in this version of Oliver. We were suppose to feel for him even when he is not talking, actually, ESPECIALLY when he is not talking. Bill Sikes is... yikes. He looks fragile in this version that I asked myself is this really an adaptation of Oliver Twist or overly twisted story that the characters start swapping their personality?
The Princess Bride (1987)
Funny. Timeless. Must watch.
The story is catchy and I like the dialog - they are witty. I laugh so hard especially the scene when the Man in Black is trying to climb up The Cliffs of Insanity without the rope and Montoya tried to rush him because he cannot wait to kill him and the torture scene when the Count trying to get a survey from Westley (I mean who does that? But it works). From that point on things got crazy. The Princess is beautiful and Westley is amazing with his "as you wish" romanticism and charming gaze.
The bond between the boy, played by Savage, and his grandfather is sweet and almost comedic especially about the kissing scenes. Overall, the story is very funny and I think it catches the attention of many people despite its ridiculous story line like reviving Westley that "mostly dead". The characters are all funny and I can't stop laughing and I'm going to watch it again in a few seconds.
Watch this with your kids and friends.
Jeremy (1973)
Gosh!
I find this movie quite slow and monotonous most of the time. The dialog is not engaging and foreign. One thing that I have to point out is that I fail to feel the emotion the character tried to portray. Maybe part of it because the way it was shot, too much close-ups that I was longing to see the setting as to establish the feeling of place.
As for the actors, they are really trying to do a great job until they kiss. I was personally feel annoyed the way they kissed pseudo- passionately. The character is just not played well enough to be believable.
The reason for the three stars is that because the story speaks of love and separation that could happen. Disappointing it is because it tells the story poorly like delivering a message in a made-up language and only the sender understands it.
La tua presenza nuda! (1972)
Oh no. Mark Lester did not...
I think it is not entirely a thrilling movie. The actors were not right especially Lester. He was chosen as Oliver in 'Oliver!' because he got the right face which deliver the character nicely. But in this movie I think, he is not 'evil' that his innocent-look doesn't help him at all in being a psychopath.
What The Peeper Saw is pretty confusing towards the end of the film. The scene when Elise and Marcus in the bed is just bizarre and almost gross or maybe unnecessary. I think the movie will work out just fine if it focus on Marcus' mysterious act in personal way and acting innocent to fool everybody rather than showing more skin, in that way the revelation might be more believable and favorable to his looks - innocent but evil.
My Girl (1991)
Touching.
The story of friendship in this movie is so beautiful and I can't restrain myself from crying towards the end of the movie. Both Vada and Thomas is a good actor.
The movie is great, but I think the friendship of Vada and Thomas J. is not concrete enough to make it heart-wrenching at the end maybe because there isn't enough laughter in their days that makes people reminisce about when the tragedy happen. but still, the tragedy is good enough to make people cry.
But their friendship is great and so tragic that it is almost unfair to Vada for losing important people from her life.
Melody (1971)
It takes you back to that mixture of feeling of shy, anxious, excited and happy. To sum it all, first love.
I am 23 now and this film is older than me. I wasn't even born yet when this movie is out but I find it very sweet and successfully makes me blush. The story reminds you of how it is when you first fall in love. The moment she catches you staring at her make you feel shy then anxious and suddenly over-the-moon without realizing it you keep doing it and won't miss a chance to look at her even a millisecond. This movie takes you back to "that" feelings which makes it so beautiful because it is true - it happens when you're 10.
I can't get over the cuteness of both Mark Lester and Tracy Hyde, especially Lester. But I have to admit that Mark Lester is a bit awkward at the cemetery scene, I think his romantic vibe is inadequate. But his character in Melody survives because of his asset - boyish and cuteness (or innocent-look, waif-look some may say) just like the tone at the end of his line 'Look, if I dance with her, would you dance with her friend?' - almost begging and adorable. Also Bee Gees' song 'First of May' sweeten it further making the 5-minutes scene stays with you for a long time. I was blushing whenever I listen to the song.
I haven't felt this way for a long time - the feeling of innocent, lifting love. Beautiful film.
