Dexter: New Blood (2021)
A complete abomination
For one, the ending to the first was as good as it can get. He realized he brings harm to everyone good in his life and sent his girlfriend and son away to have a chance at happiness without him in their life and exiled himself to the PNW. So he can live out his days alone and not bring tragedy to anyone good that he comes in contact with while maintaining the charade of normalcy he needs to function in society and feed his dark passenger.
What does the reboot do? Throw all that in the trash and have him in a completely new live 3000 miles away with a girlfriend who has a daughter and is a cop!!! So he is with a family now he can bring harm to and will, and a cop who can easily find out his past. This just scream plot device and contrivance and again, sets fire to all that happened before and growth he had made through 8 seasons.
Also the setting was beyond bleak and complete contrast to Miami. Or LA posing as Miami.
Then his son comes back and finds him inexplicably???? No hint of an explanation. Completely casts aside his mother, ala Top Gun Maverick and Charley, since there is no need would complicate this ridiculous premise. His perfect mate and Dexter hardly cares she is dead.
And further having Dexter train his son to be a killer burns whatever shred of all the previous 8 years of growth and development and history the series had established. Dexter would never want to bring harm to anyone good, much less his son, and definitely not send him on the same path and dark, painful journey that he had experienced with no second thoughts, just gleefully showing him the ropes.
This was all a sacrilege and contrived, ridiculous mess thrown together just so Dexter could die, which is what everyone seemed to want as the perfect ending for some reason?
And I didn't even talk about the ridiculous serial killer concocted for this finale. But that had become the standard for this show.
Dexter: Remember the Monsters? (2013)
The perfect ending to Dexter
I realize I am in the minority here, but throughout the series one thing that was constant was that Dexter brought tragedy to all those he came in contact with, from co-workers, to girlfriends, his family, his sister. This put Dexter at odds with maintaining his secret life and unquenchable thirst to kill and the life he had to keep up in order to maintain his secret dark side. He only wanted to the bad to suffer, but he was hurting all the good people in his life and that would never be able to change.
He finally realized that to have anyone else in his life would eventually end badly for them so he sent his new girlfriend and son away, far away from him, so they would at least have a chance at a happy life and exiled himself far away from everyone. Living a life of solitude in the PNW.
I don't feel someone always has to die to end a series. That is lazy formulaic writing. And why does he have to go to jail? In a measure the main character grew and realized what he was and how to continue existing without killing those around him that were good. I don't use love or care since he admits he is a psychopath and incapable of such, but he seems to recognize wrong and right and good and bad.
No, the final season was not perfect, it was flawed, but the ending for Dexter was perfect, to me anyway.
To reboot it was a horrible mistake and atrocious on every level. He had a girlfriend. WHY? And a cop girlfriend at that! He left to get away from people and relationships and the inevitable harm he eventually will cause them. And why update boring New York, why not the PNW as he wound up at before. How and why would he assimilate himself into a new life? AND how did his son find him? The series never even remotely touches on an explanation. The tease with the son was a predictable mess.
Anyway I am in the minority opinion on both of these. But that is the way I saw it. It ended perfectly the first time and the resurrection was worse, to me, than the reviews for the first series finale. It was like he was brought back just to kill him and maybe with a little more backstory it may have been better. But to train his kid to be a killer made Dexter one dimensional and threw all he learned about relationships that led him to the PNW out the window with not even a superficial explanation.
So there.
Welcome to Chippendales (2022)
A+ production, cast, and story few knew
The sets, costumes , and feel are 100% authentic. Amazing job Hulu. The casting is dead on perfect as well Murray Bartlett again, as he did in White Lotus, shines the brightest. Glad to see he has been noticed in Hollywood. But the story is one I had no idea of and didn't know how dark it was. Or the twists and turns it took. And I know this isn't 100% accurate. But that's not the point of the show. It's immensely engaging and entertaining. And the direction and pacing also are perfect. This is one of those seires that will end and leave one longing for more. But in this case there won't be. But enjoyable while it lasts.
Better Call Saul: Nippy (2022)
Disappointing
For one, the guy wasn't going to tell anyone that gene, he was Saul. And two, seemed he just wanted to be pals, not a threat, and three, the game was a robbery of clothing that after fencing would net maybe $800, and four, the amount of preparation that went in was on the level of a major heist, not a petty haul, therefore the overhead was way more costly than the payoff.
I don't know. I can see Saul liking and wanting to pull off a scheme. It's in his nature. Maybe he just used this as an excuse to pull one after his boring Cinnabon life. He has to see though. That he is bad for everyone. These seem to be decent people and he's putting their life's in harms way to feed his addiction. Maybe that's the moral of the story I feel bad for the Carol Burnett family. And jimmy is even more unlikeable now. But on the whole disappointing after his fall to Robert Forster and "I'll take care of it" line.
The Morning Show (2019)
Second season...eh
The characters seems to have changed personalities.and sometimes seem almost one liner ish in their dialogue. Also, does every single conversation anyone and everyone has on this show have to be so high intensity shouting drama this is so important end of the world screaming cursing back stabbing high strung drama?!?!?!
Lord it has gotten old. Everyone is one dimensional now and I don't even know what all the screaming is about. But these people I could care less what happens now they're all so one dimension and self centered and out of touch.
Archer: Archer: 1999 -- Bort the Garj (2019)
Hey writers, rewatch seasons 1-3
To find out why this show used to be so special. It was character driven. It didn't matter what the gang was doing, it was funny because of the characters and interactions.
This latest installment of a theme season is the worst so far. Annoying one liners, an incomprehensible plot, and all actors mailing it in. Oh and horrible writing.
And this huge flashing red light, archers voice has become annoying. Something that seems to happen in all animated shows. The lead male becomes femine and annoying. See homer, Stan Smith, hank hill, ... in the later seasons. Just make archer like he was in the first few seasons. Confident and not so damn whiny and at times, feminine.
Oh and this other huge flashing warning light: half the first episode dominated by fart jokes.
I also miss the background detailed art. The retro cars and architecture and vending machine and stuff. I love to pause it and just take it in. All missing.
Feel free to contact me as a consultant. We could have fun getting this amazing show back on track.
Bloodline: Part 33 (2017)
Blame Netflix for this abomination
Florida canceled the tax breaks so Netflix canceled the show instead of paying the difference. Shame. What might have been. The writers had six seasons planned then had to wrap it up abruptly. So there really wasn't a good way to end. It's not like Netflix didn't have money and this was a highly rated Netflix original. Terrible decision to tear it all down. What a compete let down. But not as bad as game of thrones finale. Close tho
The Orville (2017)
Captures the Spirit of Star Trek better than the other Star Trek series out now
And by far. Seth has found his calling. Every episode just gets better and better. it is the perfect mix of drama and lighter moments. The storylines are imaginative, unique, and compelling. The effects are better than can be expected for a TV series, the costumes and makeup are first class, excellent character development and chemistry. I cant wait for next season and will definitely miss it during the off season, but without a doubt this is the most pleasant surprise on TV this year in my opinion. And one of the top shows out there now period.
Shopgirl (2005)
Excellent movie at what it sets out to do.
I gave it a 10, not because it's the greatest movie ever, but because it achieves exactly what it sets out to be so well. It's a great story with interludes of comedy that really gets in touch with emotions many of us feel. If you expect it to be a straight up comedy, this isn't it, and it's not a light movie either, but not cheesy, or Hollywood formulaic either. It's based on Martin's novella of the same name, and if you read that you will find that Martin is so in touch with the emotions and feelings of relationships in a down to earth way that very few superficial Hollywood types would ever begin to understand. It's a sweet, tender and at times heartbreaking story of a young girl and her relationship with an older man and also a younger guy that moves you in ways one wouldn't expect from Martin, but I have found he is a very talented actor/writer/narrator/comedian, and very in touch with with all the little things people feel in relationships that you wouldn't expect from someone his age and stature, but he captures my thoughts as well as anyone ever has and his novella and performance in the movie version were both very moving. Highly recommended for a real date movie, not a cheesy chick flick at all and very different from anything you've seen from Hollywood in a long, long while.
Bewitched (2005)
Very good summer movie...are u people high ...
...who said it was awful? Maybe you just don't like Will Ferrell? But it was what it set out to be: a fun, funny, witty summer movie. Ferrell was funny, not corny as he sometimes was in "Kicking and Screaming", I also liked Kidman's character and I'm not a fan of hers. But she played the part of a witch very well. Soooo if you like Ferrell and want to see a light, fun movie I recommend you ignore the comments bashing it below and go see it, you wont be disappointed. The supporting characters were entertaining as well Michael Caine was good as the father as was that guy from the daily show
This was a very entertaining movie and I highly recommend it if you want to spend a couple of fun hours this summer.
