Oppenheimer (2023)
Mini serie would have been a better way to go
First off, the dialogues are actually audible, quite clear, happy that they mended this in comparison to Nolan's last outing Tenet.
Secondly, a captivating story told in a even more captivating way.
The acting is perhaps best of the year so far, Oscar nominations galore.
I saw it on a digital IMAX screen, very pristine and filmy.
Sound, cinematography and score are stand outs too.
Only thing is, this film would have been a even better mini series.
The run time and intense dialogues/ intrigues can be quite draining to the viewer.
As a Dutchman I noticed that, Oppenheimer did not speak Dutch in the film, it sounded like an Irishman trying to speak German. Half a point deduction.
Not Nolan's best but it is up there, like the bellowing smoke from a nuclear explosion.
8.5/10
Let's go to James Bond 007 next, Nolan!
No Hard Feelings (2023)
Not worth seeing in the cinema
Poor.
Expected more from a Jennifer Lawrence film.
While Margot Robbie is making waves in Barbie, Jennifer serves us this; a hardly funny, predictable comedy.
Forgettable performances by everyone except Jennifer, who tries to salvage this train wreck.
And the boy in the film is very unlikable, unsympathetic and badly acted. He took me out of the film. Wish I could remove him out of this film.
Some good one liners but that is just about it.
And the music is not bad. But that's about it.
Do not see this film in the cinema. It is not worth it.
Stream it if you do not have anything better to do.
5/10.
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One (2023)
Cliffhanger!
Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part One is a suspenseful action-thriller with great stunts and a fair few laughs.
This movie sets it apart from previous installments by being more mysterious and offering more suspense.
Tom Cruise is excellent as always, but the supporting cast elevates the film to new heights. Their interaction is outstanding.
The opening scene reminds me of great submarine movies of decades ago, absolutely thrilling!
This film is a definite blockbuster and I personally cannot wait for the conclusion coming next year.
See it on the largest screen with the best sound you can find!
9/10.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
Better than Into the Spider-verse
No rave review here, not in the same league like The Dark Knight or Empire Strikes Back or Captain America: Winter Soldier.
Don't get me wrong, it is good, actually quite good, but not the masterpiece it is made out to be by others. The visuals are mesmerizing, the sounds punchy and it has some nice character depth. But in the end it is a slowly paced story, stretched or spread too thin. Miles Morales is less likable than Into the Spider-Verse and is easily upstaged by almost every other character. And the villain disappears after the first act?
This animation takes itself too seriously 8/10.
Pathaan (2023)
Blockbuster!
Pathaan is a high voltage blockbuster action film.
Gorgeous locations across the planet, exciting action choreography and an entertaining but somewhat thin plot.
Shah Rukh Khan delivers in spades with action moves rivaling Hollywood fights and intense dramatic moments. Chemistry with Deepika Padukone is especially striking.
John Abraham is fierce and charming at the same time.
One major flaw are the special effects, sub par in my humble opinion. But this hardly detracts from the entertainment value.
This film will be liked by long time Bollywood fans since the 1990's
Watch out for an extended cameo.
8/10.
Bang Bang (2014)
All style, little substance, still quite entertaining !
Bang Bang is an entertaining action-filled Indian movie based on the Hollywood blockbuster movie Knight and Day (2010).
Stunning visuals and thrilling action sequences are the positive features of this movie. The locations ( Greece, UAE, Thailand, India, Czech Republic ) are depicted beautifully and gives the movie a glossy feel, as does the background score. Unfortunately the script is often flawed and the acting performances of some of the actors, especially Katrina Kaif, are one-dimensional and quite poor.
That said there is also a special mention about the lead protagonist Hrithik Roshan, who shines on screen as a likable multi-layered character in this movie. He carries the movie on his impressively sculpted shoulders. The songs are depicted quite nicely, though hamper the overall tempo of the movie, which at over two-and-a-half hours feels a half hour too long.
In short, Bang Bang is a visually beautiful action packed movie to enjoy this festive season!
