Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
Seriously,guys?
What were people expecting from this movie? The Godfather Part 2? No, you went into a Marvel movie that was advertised as a fun superhero movie. I really don't get the low ratings
Positives: The action scenes are great and see these heroes working together that we only saw a glimpse of in The Avengers. One standout scene is the Hulk v Hulkbuster fight in South Africa which has balls to the wall fun and contained a lot of laughs. The characters are better than even here. There were many complaints about the first movie not having character development and what do people do? Complain about 20 minutes of screen time is dedicated to developing Black Widow, Hulk and Hawkeye as characters which is great since these characters don't have standalone movies. Iron Man and Cap. are given enough conflict to set up Civil War and Thor is at his funniest in this film. The newcomers to the team, Quicksilver and Scarlett Witch are also great additions to the teams as well as Vision played by Paul Bettany, he steals a lot of scenes and I sure will not spoil him for you, if you've never heard of the character.
The villain of Ultron played by James Spader is great. He's more a neglected son of Tony Stark in his sarcastic and witty mannerisms but also serves as a great threat but I would have liked to see his motivations to destroy the world explained a bit more. The plot is good enough. Tony creates a AI named Ultron to keep world peace and to basically guard the Earth while the Avengers are retired. This backfires when Ultron decides the only path to peace is the extinction of not only the Avengers but all human kind. The humour here is top form and really shows the chemistry between every member of the team and for some truly laugh out loud moments.
Negatives: 3D is a flippin' rip off. The 3D could of been really capitalised on in the action scenes but is just a cash grab Vision's powers aren't fully explained. Thor's sub-plot feels rather underwhelming.
Conculsion Avengers 2 is a boat load is freaking fun and everything a summer blockbuster should be. It also really makes me look forward to the expansion of this Marvel universe and where we could go.
Iron Man Three (2013)
If you love the comic books you'll probably hate this movie.
Me, not a fan or follower of the comics, love the MCU. You may have seen reviews negatively discarding this movie. It's one of those movies where you either love it or hate it.
Showing from my score I loved it, it takes more of a different turn than the first two with the story which is about Tony and developing him as a character.
First of all, the writing great (what do expect from Shane Black). The witty dialogue and one liners had me gut busting with laughter. Even the twist that I'd hate to spoil is pretty funny to even be considered a comedy. Most of this is due to Robert Downey Jr. turning in another performance as Tony Stark, the likable a**hole. The supporting cast of Gwyneth Paltrow, Don Cheadle, Guy Pearce, Ben Kingsley as the Mandarin, who is a good villain but just no Loki or Joker level.
The action is well directed too, showing Tony can kick a** with or without a suit. There small shootouts and fistfights along with your big budget stuff you expect from Marvel include a very tense attack on Air Force One. The CGI is great too.
People have been constantly been nitpicking at this movie, relax, it's not every movie where it is required to analyze every part of the plot and story. It's just a bit popcorn munching, summer blockbuster fun. Not f****ing Citizen Kane.
Godzilla (2014)
Not bad, as others say, but has soooooo much potential
Godzilla is one of those movies that you watch you don't hate, but when you how good it could of been.
First, on the good, Bryan Cranston, he gives a very emotional performance which actually brought a tear to my eye. Shame he is isn't in the movie that much. The realism is great with governments disguising monsters as earthquakes, it quite interesting. Also, Ken Wantabe, even though he is given cringe-worthy lines like "Let them fight." but his character was understandable and likable. Also, the action (the little of it) is well directed. Godzilla is well portrayed as an animal, and actually feels BIG.
Now to the bad, Aaron-Taylor Johnson, don't get me wrong, I like him but in this movie he is the most generic, uninteresting character, I've seen in a long time. I just about cared for him and his family to survive, but is the main character and add to the next problem. There's not enough Godzilla, there's a moment where you think "Oh, stuff's about go down!" but it cuts away from the monster fight that Godzilla is know for. What the actual hell! If this movie is about Godzilla at least let him have more screen time. If the is a good example is Pacific Rim, that movie was self aware and focused on epic fights and succeeded at that. Godzilla thinks that it can't have a bit fun. Speaking of fun, there could be better humour, to kind of lighten the mood and still feel serious, this is something that Marvel does well and would be good here.
My verdict is that Godzilla isn't bad, it is enjoyable and fun at moments but when you stand back and look back at the movie you see the potential it had and how good it could of been. 7/10 or a good time, no alcohol required.
