Resident Alien: Pilot (2021)
hilarious
A murderous but empathetic alien that embodies the best of humanity juxtaposed with characters embodying the worst of humanity. Dark, fast humour, reminiscent of Deadpool sparkles through the plot threads. Absolutely refreshing and watch worthy. Hope it makes many seasons.
Father Brown (2013)
Anachronistic delight
This delightful series provides modern viewpoints cobbled with wholesome values. The British countryside is luxuriantly filmed, presented as an appealing character itself; rather like Doc Martin does for Cornwall, this show makes the viewer long to visit. Tourism boost? As long as the watcher can overlook 21st century social/political outlooks superimposed on a post WW2 community, the three dimensional characters and neatly solved murders provide light, emotionally satisfactory viewing. It doesn't aspire to be a heavy lecture or period accurate; it does present "Treat-your-brother-as-yourself" morality in an enjoyable escapism format with characters whose stories the viewer wants to follow. Especially in the first 4 seasons. The last 3 seasons get a bit uninspired, with Bunty introduced to try to appeal to the younger audience. I wish the writers would bring back original characters, and, if keeping Bunty and Mallory, allow those characters to grow up and develop from experience. Then, focus on interesting mysteries as the series focus, instead of regurgitating the stale inspector vs priest (thinly veiled jealousy) and shallow ingenue sparkling nearly witlessly.
The first 4 seasons are 10 stars. 5th season, 9 stars. By 8th season, (3 stars overall) one watches to see how the stories wind up. But, one hopes the series could be revived with early characters paired with new writers. This could have been a new Midsommer Murders, but it was shuffled into a writing pool from Nancy Drew or Buffy the Vampire Slayer. The show became popular appealing to one audience--why throw them away pursuing the post teen viewers?
Father Brown: The Labyrinth of the Minotaur (2017)
changes
Bunty (aka Nancy drew) for Lady Felicia? Really?? And, exit Sid? Downward spiral. The show's chemistry is lost.
Father Brown: The Star of Jacob (2016)
Super for Christmas
One of the cosiest episodes. Need more Alex Price (Sid Carter) though. Hope this funny character is still going to be regularly featured.
Father Brown: The River Corrupted (2020)
sid carter
Glad to see Sid Carter back; he's one of the best characters. Hope to see more of him.
Instinct: Grey Matter (2019)
Sorry it's over
I sure liked this show. Hate that it's over. Maybe some other time time it will be resurrected by another company. It's different, interesting, and not too Gorey.
Lucifer (2016)
Comeback
Bring this show back! It was such a refreshing story; it really wasn't that same old formulaic procedural. The humorous dialogue and "growing-human" pains were truly fun to watch. ThrreTh really nothing quite like this out right now. And bonus! You get to stare at Tom Ellis!
