One of Us (2017)
Highly Recommended
Saw this film on Netflix. Gave it 8 stars. Not solely because of the story-line, editing, and production, but because of the bravery of the cast, crew, and producers in standing up against a community that is generations old to tell their story and risk their lives in doing so. Of course, there are bad apples in every religion, but when or how can physical spousal abuse or child sexual molestation ever be justified? How is it acceptable to turn a blind eye when children and women are being violated?? Hope more people see this film and hope more of these people ultimately get the support they need to break free.
Night School (2016)
Made my Eyes Sweat
I really enjoyed watching this documentary. Documentaries are my favorite genre of films. Although I love drama, suspense and entertainment, I love learning about real people and real issues happening in our world. I gave the film a 7 star rating, some of it dragged and was a bit non- cohesive at times, but overall, a good story with characters who were engaging. You really want all three of them to make it and go on to lead successful fulfilling lives. It's a feel good movie with a positive optimistic ending. It shows how we all struggle, but that there is hope for a brighter future. * One very minor spoiler. Greg Henson, the single dad who returns to school to get his diploma, has the cutest daughter who comes down with a case of epileptic seizures. Throughout the film, you see him and others smoking cigarettes constantly around his daughter which unfortunately can cause seizures in young children. Of course, the doctors or medical professionals do not mention this link (at least not on film) and so we see the need for education continues....
American Beauty (1999)
This is Way More Than a Movie
I'm not sure what's up with calling this a "black comedy" (I'm brown myself)... but all jokes aside, this film belongs in a class of its own. The movie American Beauty is so many things on so many levels and what you get out of it has a lot to do with your own frame-of-reference for life. I imagine that you could revisit this movie at a different life period and see it from a different angle each time. I think it is an important film for people who get that there is something a little "off" about contemporary American life, particularly in the "Anytown USA" quaint American suburb. Things in suburbia and its' 360° radius are never quite what they seem, hence the tagline: Look Closer. I will never get tired of this film; it has so much to teach. The film American Beauty is a reminder of something that I have always felt; that the real actors and actresses aren't in Hollywood.
Hello I Must Be Going (2012)
I Watched it Three Times!
The underlying feeling tones that stood out in this movie for me were: Real, Raw, Genuine, Authentic, Intimate and Sincere Connection. The film reminded me of a time in life when you're in college, living on student loans or in your parents house and you still have the time and the innocence (you haven't yet been scarred and jarred by "the real world") to make these beautiful, sometimes fleeting
sometimes short-lived connections with another human being. Things like sharing family secrets, or staying on the phone until 6am while the sun comes up. Once the focus becomes "the job", "the bills" and other responsibilities; many of these beautiful moments become lost. Once an "adult", one quickly learns that relationships are often superficial, dis-honest and based on ulterior motives. This movie put me in touch with the emotions of what it's like to feel alive, loved and accepted even though you don't have it all figured out. Overall, I would give the movie a 6 but for emotional impact, I would add another 2 stars. Great gem of a film with a perfect soundtrack to accompany.
