Wayward Pines (2015)
Full of holes
Why staff a place full of willing volunteers to keep a small township of unwitting prisoners in the dark for the sake of the survival of the human race? Why not simply fill the town with willing volunteers? Why "reckon" those who speak the truth when it seems like half the town already knows the truth anyway (while the other half know that they are prisoners but haven't yet figured out why).
Why not simply take the dissenters to the control centre to see what is really going on and prove why they are there? I am sure that given the choice between being a control centre worker or having your throat slit, they would choose watching CCTV everyday.
This thing is full of holes.
Unless there is another twist to this tale, I am totally lost.
Friday Night Dinner (2011)
Brilliant bit of squirrel
I watched episode one under protest and thought "what a load of crap". Three years later, I am hooked and I have watched the whole lot at least ten times over. Tamsin (Mummy) and Mark (Jim) are my stars but it wouldn't work without the whole ensemble A very low budget TV show with no special effects. Props are limited to a frozen fox and a splitting images Prince Charles mask.
This classic relies on nothing more than brilliant writing and acting.
They both conspire to make my belly ache with laughter.
I die every time that Jim flinches away from Wilson. Genius comedy.
Not to mention Gran accidentally kissing dad on the chest.
More please.
Blitz (2011)
Not bad, but full of holes
Despite a lot of silly mistakes (like murders appearing on front pages of daily newspapers on the day of the murder etc) I was getting into this flick until the point when Blitz is released with the police unable to charge him. As he is collecting his belongings from the desk, he is handed the envelope containing 50 grand that he had taken from the informant when he murdered him in the toilets. The police knew that the 50 grand was from the informant because Dunlop told Brant that he had spent ten minutes in the toilet searching for it after finding the informants body. So a suspected killer with a motive and very strong circumstantial evidence against him is released when all along he was in possession of an envelope with Dunlops, the informants and his own prints on it. The envelope was last seen in the hands of the informant before he was murdered. Do me a favour....
Mental (2012)
Bloody Brilliant
It is stormy outside so I decided on a lazy Sunday watching Foxtel on demand. I have scrolled past this movie a hundred times but the trailer and early reviews put me off. Today, having previously watched 90% of the on demand library, I thought I'd give Mental a go.
What a gem of a film. Typically Aussie, no big FX, car chases or 20 million dollar A list superstars. Just a brilliant script, excellent cast and acting, and quirky yet believable characters.
The movie takes time to develop and the plot seems to lose itself on occasion but it all comes together in an over the top Mental finale. Glad I watched it, I will watch it again many times.
