The Wicker Man (1973)
Boring, Corny, Eccentric, Unrealistic , Not Scary = A Waste of Your Time
After all the rave reviews, I rented this movie expecting something at the very least above average and was extremely disappointed. It was TERRIBLE! Don't waste your time renting this if you are a horror fan or even if you happen to be Pagan! A few words to sum it up: boring, corny, eccentric, unrealistic, and not scary. Also, it was quite predictable. Hmmm, if everyone in the town is a nut, what are the chances the girl won't be one too? When the cop finds her and at first she is smiling, it was obvious she wasn't scared and easy to infer what would happen next. I had heard this had a good ending and even that was far from good- it didn't show anything, only animals screaming and the cop spewing Jesus crap. If what happened at the very end of this movie actually happened to you or someone you know it would obviously suck, but it didn't make for an exciting or creepy movie. All of this was supposed to have been because they couldn't get their crops to grow for one year?! LOL Maybe they had way too much beer at 'Mr. Weirdo's' Inn/Bar- that could have caused most of the stupid things that happened in this movie.
I'd recommend Silent Hill instead...it has plot similarities in that a crazy group of people does some very bad things crediting their odd religious beliefs, but has a much better plot, effects, and is genuinely engaging, dark, and creepy- like a nightmare in which you take a trip to Hell itself.
Dead Silence (2007)
Very Disappointing :(
I was really looking forward to seeing this movie based on decent reviews (for a horror movie) and the fact that it was from the director of Saw. I have always found ventriloquist dummies to be kind of creepy so thought this would be pretty scary. A friend and I rented it last night and needless to say it was VERY disappointing - he fell asleep during it as it was pretty boring. It was not scary at all and almost all of the scenes which were supposed to be scary were used by previous horror movies. For example, the face poses on each of the victims is totally from the Ring and it wasn't even half as scary as that was. Also, the music was similar to Saw. I was not creeped out by anything in this movie or jumped at anytime. The "scary" scenes were super cheesy and especially towards the end when the ghost is floating towards the main characters with her arms straight out in front of her...that was super corny too. The special effects were not good even compared to movies from over 10 years ago. I wanted to like this movie but it really lacked everything a good, scary horror movie requires. The acting wasn't terrible but wasn't great either. I found myself annoyed during the whole movie, expecting there to be more scares and general creepiness. So many other horror movies like House on Haunted Hill, Thirteen Ghosts, Darkness Falls, Strangeland, etc. were scarier, genuinely creepy, and more interesting even though they weren't rated as highly as this movie. The 6.1 rating of Dead Silence is not deserved. This seemed more like a low budget horror movie than one from big film companies and a well-known director. If you like ventriloquist dummies in horror movies, I would recommend seeing 'Magic' instead.
Gerry (2002)
Very Very VERY Boring
Gerry is about 2 young men who are best friends that decide to set out on a nature hike. They get lost in the desert for days and dehydration sets in for both of them. They soon realize they are going to die. Instead of both suffering, one friend suffocates the other when he is in bad shape so he doesn't have to suffer. Shortly after, the remaining Gerry is rescued and he realizes he killed his best friend for nothing.
There is not much of a plot, almost no dialogue, nothing scary, emotionally moving, or interesting in the slightest bit. There is no action or adventure. Basically, there is no real point.
This is probably the most boring movie I have ever seen. If 2 guys walking through the desert not talking sounds interesting to you, then rent it, otherwise don't. It could have been made a lot better if there was actually dialogue, action, or a good point. I rarely ever write a comment for a movie but this one was so bad that I wanted people to know about it so they don't waste their evening watching it. If you are looking for an awesome movie about best-friendship between 2 males, try Simon Birch, which is excellent.
