Indian Summer (1993)
Not good, but not bad either.
What can you say about Indian Summer? It's a sweet little feel good movie that is on the verge of being entertaining, but never quite delivers. The story is thin, but the dialogue and the performances by the leads are quite good. I particularly loved seeing Diane Lane and the late great Bill Paxton do their thing. I would recommend this movie to anyone who misses the simplicity of camp life and is in the mood for something light and sweet. You might enjoy it for the nostalgia alone.
Taking Care of Business (1990)
It's silly, it's fun and it makes you feel good
Taking Care of Business is a movie that was never meant to win any Oscars. It's a silly comedy that pretty much does what silly comedies are supposed to do. If you love the '80s (this movie was filmed '89) and miss the simplicity of that era, then you'll probably enjoy Taking Care of Business. Yes, there's cheesy dialogue and overacting and all that good stuff. The bottom line is that the jokes work. Not to mention that both Belushi and Grodin are perfect in their roles. Grodin does what is expected of him and Belushi plays the type of happy go lucky character he should've always played. This is a great movie for those who want a short and well deserved break from the digital age.
The Game (1997)
Fincher's best is an underrated gem
The Game is an incredible ride. If it were a Twilight Zone episode, it would be the best Twilight Zone episode by far. I do not understand the negative reviews and if you're a student of cinema like me then you shouldn't understand them either. What Fincher was able to create here was pure and utter genius. The writing, the atmosphere, the dialogue, the score, the cinematography and the brilliant performances are as close to perfection as you can get. One of the complaints I've heard about The Game is that the movie isn't realistic and goes too far. Well, today we have technology that is far more impressive than anything seen in The Game. I came to realize long ago that the world is usually a lot more complex than we realize and with money and an endless amount of resources you can get some pretty amazing things done. That being said, the goal of the movie was never to be realistic. It was rather to create an exciting ride into the realm of cinematic magic, a world where reality and fiction dance together as elegantly as possible. That is what we saw here and it was done masterfully.
