Tamo i ovde (2009)
A bitter-sweet gem
I don't know what some of the reviewers above were referring to when they said that the film was slow-paced. It's a perfect pace for the story and the characters that drive it.
It's a character-driven narrative beautifully and economically done, in the true spirit of indie greats like Jarmousch or Wenders for example. And it's a story of values that are considered lasting worldwide, so with the clever interlacing of the New York and Belgrade story streams the two cities almost blend into one with love as the glue that binds them together.
The actors' performances are strong and memorable. If you like independent film you will enjoy this one, and it may even leave you thinking as well as engage you emotionally.
District 9 (2009)
Awesome!
Awesome! The only way to describe this film. I am glad Pete Jackson left the direction to someone less accomplished and less inclined to self- indulge. The film has it all - great plot, first-class acting, perfect timing, grit, social commentary, originality, brilliance, WETA workshop's special effects, and Pete Jackson's brilliant production value.
It's great to see films like this can still get made. See it even if you don't like SciFi - the story will blow you away and you'll find it's a film about human nature more than anything else.
Awesome!
Mi nismo andjeli (1992)
Superb!
I fell in love with this film when it was first released and I've been chasing a DVD copy of it for years. I know pretty much every line in the film (I know, I know, I have no life...) For those of you who didn't know, the DVD was finally released in early 2005...and there was much rejoicing :-D.
The DVD release has English subtitles but I don't think you will gain as much pleasure out of it if you don't speak Serbian. Despite its relatively low budget it's really well directed and produced, and masterfully shot.
It's Srdjan Dragojevic's film-school graduation piece which shot him into instant fame. And he kept it going with every new film he made. He's a truly original world-class director equally capable of making entertaining films and serious art. I really hope he gets his big shot overseas one day.
