Tre uomini e una gamba (1997)
A very sunny, feel good movie
As a recent Italian emigrant, I was able to fully enjoy this wonderful, sunny movie that has brought back to mind a lot of innuendos and down-to-earth jokes that, certainly, are not meant to be racist: quite the opposite, actually: every joke is firmly tongue-in-cheek.
The authors-actors also dare to play themselves, using their real names: this allows them to freely play with several styles of direction, always from their point of view, which somebody may define iconoclastic. The truth - in my personal opinion - is that they have full confidence in their own sense of humour and thus they have created a homage to more serious movie genres - from neorealism, to westerns, to 50's horror.
This is like Carl Barks when painting with oil: using a formal medium to portray less serious things.
Van Helsing (2004)
Poutpourri of Boredom
After fifteen minutes from the beginning, as the plot (?) was unveiling, I realised that sooner or later I could have seen Van Helsing fighting against Godzilla or Alien VII, so I decided to take a deep nap. I started dreaming about genuine B movies, which have been whipped away by computer generated effects. I suddenly woke up because of my neighbours' complaints - (yes, I snore loudly). I blamed myself for every penny I spent for renting this movie. Then I realised that somebody else paid for the rental and I felt a little better. And I felt much, much better because I didn't go to a cinema to see this boring potpourri. Definitely to be avoided.
Donnie Darko (2001)
Wasted Time and Money...
You may like it or not, I believe this is a rough remake of Lulu on the Bridge, with an atrocious plot in which too many incongruence's mislead the spectator. An engine is an engine. And if it falls from 10000 feet it will destroy a house and start a fire. A psycho-analyst is not allowed to discuss the state of health of a patient with his/her relatives or friends. An elder freak won't have enough luck to go back and forth to her mailbox, without even finding a flyer of a pizza delivery or getting squashed by a truck. If your setup is this type of escamotage, you can basically create any storyline you want.... I think I wasted enough time also reviewing this movie, so I end it here.
